Rugosa concepts by Russell Chong

Know as "The Coral Planet", Rugosa started out as a red planet in a concept painting Filoni created early in the series' development. "Because the Malevolence series was red," he says, "we knew Rugosa couldn't be red. you want to give each episode its own color palette and its own sense of place."

Russell Chong nailed Rugosa's look after Filoni suggested it was once a sea planet whose ocean evaporated. "It has to look as if at one time it was a beautiful underater place, and then most everhting had died. It's a combination of life and death here," Chong says. "I'm a scuba diver, so they picked the right guy for the job."

Another great thing about a franchise like Star Wars is that we get various forms of multimedia, so we have live action movies, sometimes on-location and sometimes CGI, we have 2D and 3D animated series, we have video games, we have a multitude of artists drawing planets, and more. All of it means there’s more page space, so to speak, for all these different worlds, a whole bunch of different artists working on them, but also that it’s a chance to see them rendered in different ways, to use these different mediums to show an even bigger variety. I love that, I love getting to see entirely new planets or familiar planets designed in a new form of media, I love that Kashyyyk can be found in the movies, in the animated shows, in the games, in the comics, and it’s all one planet, but new every time. And I love what that means for what each medium can do, that each one excels in different ways and make me want to take a stroll through them ALL.
