Today I have a rose for you that I grew in my previous garden in San Diego: William Shakespeare 2000. This gem was once very hyped by David Austin Roses as one of their most beautiful red roses and I agree, but only about a decade later it almost seems to be forgotten, a faith that sadly happens to many wonderful roses. In my opinion William Shakespeare 2000 deserves its place in the gardens of the world. The beauty of his large, velvety, crimson red (their color is a little darker than my camera was able to capture), very full, cupped, quartered blooms speaks for itself. On top of that, they also come with a lovely strong old rose fragrance. Do you remember William Shakespeare 2000? Do you grow one of these forgotten roses in your garden? My roses are giving me what I believe is their last flush this year. Growing roses organically here in my still fairly new garden in Austin is a roller coaster ride and, to be honest with you, sometimes I am so frustrated that I just want to throw in the towel. Then I get a bloom like this of ‘Belinda Dream’ and it seems to be all worth it. All of my roses are growing on their own roots and they are not even two years in this garden, so they probably have just reached their toddler stages. I guess, I have to be patient and carry on. Two days ago, at the first day of autumn, I fertilized all my roses probably for the last time this year with an organic rose and flower fertilizer. Some of them have set new buds already and I hope the others will follow suit and all of them delight me with a beautiful autumn flush. Temperatures have finally cooled down here a little in Austin and that will certainly help. We desperately need rain, though, but my roses, of course, get hand watered until natural rain arrives. Are you also hoping to see your roses bloom one more time this year? The mauve/lavender rose in the picture is Sweetness, a stately grandiflora rose with an amazingly strong citrus fragrance that I grew in my old garden in Dan Diego. I miss her, sigh! My own garden is definitely the most triste it can be right now! We had two substantial frosts within a few days here in Austin and almost everything that had been a nice green color is now a sad, depressive brown. My roses had still so many buds, all frozen off. I know it is the course of nature and it needs to happen but it still makes me feel a little melancholic. Especially since we don’t have a beautiful, pristine, white blanket of snow like many of you that covers everything up and makes the winter pretty and more bearable. So I thought I would post a rose against the winter blues! I am pretty sure that this one is a rugosa rose, most likely ‘Terese Bugnet’, that you don’t see that often here on Instagram. Two posts ago I published a photo of an English garden with climbing roses grown on a pergola (if you missed it, just scroll back two posts) and for today I found another one in my archives featuring climbing roses growing on tall arches in front of a lovely old house. I think these roses are breathtakingly beautiful! I feel really inspired to find a climbing rose for my own garden here in Austin! That won’t be easy and definitely will involve some research since Austin has a climate that is not exactly known for roses to thrive in, but I will not be deterred! Usually I am a fan of the very romantic and full cabbage or quartered roses, but the abundant sprays of blooms of the singles appeal to me as well. To be honest, there is hardly any rose that I don’t like! I am pretty certain that this is a Multiflora Rose, but I am not sure about the specific variety.
