There are an infinite number of primes
okay so basically i have no formal way of saying this so im jumping right in
SO
imagine for a secondd that there are only two primes, 2 and 3.
So theoretically every number greater than 2 and 3 is composite. that's there the primes end, right?
well no. if you take 2 and 3 and you multiply them together you get 6, which is a factor of both, BUT if you add or subtract one you get two new primes* because the number 6 has "all of the prime factors in it"
*or factors of primes you haven't seen yet
so now you've discovered 5 and 7 and now you think "hm well surely now we have all the primes"
wrong again. 2×3×5×7 is 210. 211 is prime, and 209 is either prime or a factor of primes we haven't seen yet. (in this case 11 and 19.)
ergo there are infinitely many primes, qed or something idk
