Providing some drama in the autumn meadow or border is the cormous perennial Colchicum 'Waterlily' (meadow saffron). The large double pink flowers appear without the foliage which emerges as large leaves in the spring.

The #meadowsaffron, or #autumncrocus, as it is also called, is a highly fascinating plant. Its purple flowers look like crocuses, but appear in early autumn, when most other plants are done flowering. This is also reflected in its German name #herbstzeitlose, which means “autumn messenger”. From the “naked” flowers may also be derived the English moniker “naked ladies”. The leaves, on the other hand, show up in spring and have been mistaken for bear’s garlic. A dangerous and potentially deadly mistake, since the entire plant contains the alkaloid #colchicine, which acts similar to #arsenic, and has no known antidote. In addition it has a long latency period, which makes poisoning with autumn crocus even more difficult to recognize and treat. While deadly, it is also made use of in medicine, for treating certain types of cancer, as well as in plant breeding, where it causes plants to grow larger and produce bigger fruits. A plant named #colchicon was first mentioned by #dioscorides. The specific name autumnale given by Linnaeus, refers to its time of flowering. The genus name Colchicum is derived from #colchis, the landscape on the Black Sea, most famously known for the witch #medea, who is told to have poisoned her enemies with meadow saffron, but also restored youth with its help. In Apollonius Rhodius’ Argonautica, Medea rubs a salve on Jason’s limbs, which contains meadow saffron. According to another legend, meadow saffron grew from the blood that dripped from #prometheus’ liver. However, the same story is also related to the Mandrake and both plants are candidates for the mythical plant named “blood of Prometheus”. The #artwork shown here is one of my more #illustrative works, combining #symbolism and showing the #plantspirit in an #anthropomorphic form. It was first show-cased in 2017 at gallery Circle1 in Berlin, as part of the “Bad Intentions” group exhibition. It is drawn with black #ink on paper that has been stained with coffee and meadow saffron flower extract. The flowers of Colchicum 'Rosy Dawn' (autumn crocus, meadow saffron) appear in the autumn and the large leaves emerge in the spring. The bold rosy-mauve flowers have strong stems that stand up well to the wind and rain. Please be aware that this cormous perennial is toxic if eaten.

I suspect some guerrilla gardening has resulted in these Colchicum autumnale (meadow saffron, autumn crocus, fog crocus, meadow crocus, Michaelmas crocus, upstart) flowering by the roadside. This is a cormous herbaceous perennial which flowers in the autumn and the large leaves will appear in the spring.

The double mauve flowers of Colchicum 'Waterlily' (meadow saffron) are blooming at the front of the long border in Arduaine Garden, Argyll, Scotland. They were next to another autumn flowering herbaceous plant Hesperantha coccinea (crimson flag lily, schizostylis). The cormous perennial Colchicum needs space for their large leaves to emerge in the spring.

The heralds of autumn are flowering around the base of specimen trees at Cambridge University Botanic Garden, UK, including Colchicum byzantinum (meadow saffron). This plant produces several pale lilac, white-tubed flowers from a corm prior to the leaves appearing in the spring. When using Colchicum species in plantings it is important to leave space for the broad foliage.

Colchicum laetum (meadow saffron) is from south east Russia but was thriving in the dry conditions beneath trees at Cambridge University Botanic Garden, UK. It has paler more delicate flowers than most of the other Colchicum species commonly grown in gardens.

Signalling the start of autumn Colchicum 'Rosy Dawn' (meadow saffron, autumn crocus) flowers in the borders of the Beth Chatto Garden, Essex, UK. This cormous perennial reaches up to 15 cm in height, with up to six goblet-shaped rosy-pink flowers. Grows best in moist but well-drained, humus-rich, fertile soils. The large leaves will appear in the spring.
