In these roadside verges some Colchicum species (meadow saffron, autumn crocus, fog crocus, Michaelmas crocus, upstart) have been planted and are thriving. This cormous herbaceous perennial flowers in the autumn and produces large leaves in the spring.

This small alpine lake is surrounded by millions of Colchicums. The question is which species this is? There are so many Colchicum species in Anatolia, and I know so little about them, shame. #floraofturkey #colchicum #土耳其植物 #秋水仙

Providing autumnal interest to this meadow are the flowers of Colchicum autumnale 'Album' (meadow saffron). This cormous perennial will produce large strap-like leaves in the spring and these will die back in summer. The plant is toxic if eaten and gloves should be worn when handling.

In my friend‘s old cottage garden on Orkney this cultivar, probably of Colchicum autumnale 'Pleniflorum' (meadow saffron, autumn crocus, fog crocus, meadow crocus, Michaelmas crocus, upstart), has been here for decades in a sheltered border. This cormous herbaceous perennial flowers in the autumn and will produce large leaves in the spring.
