Mafalde - Temporary Score: 10
EDIT: ok, ok, apologies, i had a pasta mistake. mafalde (new updated photo of the dried noodle) is the long thin version of the ribbon. rusticanine (similarly: lasagnette or sagnarelli) is a short cut, wider flat noodle with two fluted edges. there is a post for rusticanine coming soon. the description and points below still apply for mafalde. the Alt Uses, on the other hand, are pretty clearly for rusticanine, so i'll be stealing those for the forthcoming post. in the meantime, some new Alt Uses for mafalde can be found below.
Description: very thin ribbons with wavy edges; found in Nonna's sewing basket. (the short cut versions seems to be typcially called Mafaldini Corte)
First Take Points: 4 - hey look i took a picture of my food for once! and ok, ok, withhold judgement for just a moment while i tell you that altho it LOOKS bland, that's just because i'm a horrible photographer. that dish is actually mafalde noodles in a luscious butter-lemon-dill sauce. and i do mean luscious - it was so silky and rich, mmmmmm good memories. i also had the bright idea to throw some capers on top, but not until after i had taken the picture, and i was too lazy for another picture, so sue me. these have the joy of being thin where they are flat but with a nice texture on the ruffles.
Remix Bonus Points: 1 - these a pretty fun; they remind me of mini lasagna noodles, only they're mini in every way: shorter, thinner, less space between the crinkles. and because they are mini lasagna noodles, i could... make a mini lasagna???
Amusement Points: 5 - honestly, Mafalde sounds like an old lady name (i can say that, i'm an old lady), particularly if she is potentially descended from witches. like Mafalde is probably a second cousin to Jessica Fletcher (for all you non-old-ladies out there, that's Angela Lansbury's character in Murder She Wrote), and she lives in massachusetts and on her mother's side goes back to the batch from salem, and on her father's side goes back to the old country in sicily - i'm starting to think it's likely that she's also related to Sophia Petrillo - and she doesn't talk about it but she's maybe possibly definitely mobbed up; she makes gorgeous quilts but - to the horror of her nonna on her father's side - she's rather a disaster in the kitchen, which, incidentally, is also the reason she's been politely invited to "never make potions again, we'll handle it, thanks" after the Great Poisoning Event of 1984 when she brought homebrew kombucha to the family reunion on her mother's side and several people got so sick they were speaking in tongues.
Annoyance Deductions: 0 - how could you be annoyed with a quilting part witch-mobster who can't coo- wait, this is about pasta. well, still not annoyed with little mini lasagna sheets.
Alternative Uses: quilts for mouses! curtains for mouse-houses! privacy screens for mouse-department-stores! i'm stuck on the mouse thing, sorry not sorry. CAPES FOR MOUSES!
Alternative Uses (part 2, for mafalde): decorative bunting for a pasta parade, or a pasta celebration in a pasta house, or a pasta ball gown.
