#JackedKirby - Jacks Back one Surfer... Finally!!! 💥💥💥 This is a fun post... one I have wanted to shed some light on for a second. Of all the glaring discrepancies that occur between Stan and Jack’s accounts of how things were created at Marvel, the Silver Surfer is one of the most egregious. Jack claims he came up with the concept 100% on his own, and Stan only found out about it after seeing the finalized art for FF 48-50. And of course Stan claims he had a lot to do with the creation of the character.... but here is the problem: Stan’s account actually contradicts HIS OWN ACCOUNTS! Previously he admitted in print interviews that he didn’t know anything about the Surfer till he seen him on the page and asked Jack “who’s that”. So this isn’t a case of Stan vs Jack, who claims what... it’s a case of Stan vs Stan, which time was he lying? 💥💥💥 Whatever the case, one thing was clear: Jack would NOT be the artist for the Surfer solo series that started in 1968. That honor would go to John Buscema, who drew the series with Stan writing. Some say this slap in the face to Jack prompted him to think about taking his talents to the Distinguished Competition. Whatever the case, with the series coming to an abrupt end in 1970 due to unexpected cancelation Jack was tasked with completing the final issue! 💥💥💥 Jack pencilled #Issue18 of the series from September of 1970. The story features the Surfer visiting the Inhumans “Great Refuge” only to be attacked by Maximus’s forces. An Inhuman vs Surfer battle... a perfect way for Jack to regain control of his beloved character!!! 💥💥💥 This great splash is one of the best pages in the book. #JackedKirby - World Of Fantasy... Kirby Style!!! 💥💥💥 Before the important anthology books of Marvel like Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense and Amazing Fantasy could give us our beloved Marvel superheroes of the 60s there was another anthology book.... this one was published by Atlas (the precursor to Marvel in name) and was called World of Fantasy. It ran 18 issues from 1956-1959 and featured many of the greatest penciling talents of the industry... Bill Everett, Don Heck, Ross Andru, Gene Colan, Dick Ayers, Joe Sinnott, Steve Ditko... and of course King Kirby! 💥💥💥 Kirby had just returned to Atlas after leaving over a debacle over the rights to Captain America and working at National Comics & Mainline comics... and he was just in time to immediately get to work in World of Fantasy! 💥💥💥 Jack did the pencils on the covers for #Issue16 (April of 1959) #Issue17 (June of 1959) and #Issue18 (August of 1959) featured in pics 1/2/3 of this post. #JackedKirby - A New God Wedding... RUINED!!! 💥💥💥 Throughout the Mister Miracle run of 1972-74 Jack Kirby was building multiple storylines in the 4th World Universe while telling his Issue by Issue stories. Some of These layered storylines were resolved, and some were left unanswered by the abrupt cancellations of the various 4th World series’s. 💥💥💥 One of the resolves storylines happened to be the fate of Scott & Barca’s relationship. They had been getting along hot and heavy for over a dozen issues by the time a wedding was planned in #Issue18 (March of 1974) for the two lovebirds. Obviously you know it wasn’t going to go off without a hitch, so as the ceremony starts a boom tube carrying Granny Goodness, Kanto, Verlander Vonderbar and other 4th World villains from Apokolips show up to disrupt the pending nuptials. They capture Scott, Barda, Shiloh and Oberon... but are quickly defeated by a force from New Genesis led by Orion, Lightray, Highfather and Metreon!!!! 💥💥💥 Highfather marries them, but a pending tornado based storm looms on the horizon... the New Genesis residence leave Oberon and Shiloh on Earth, boom tubing to New Genesis... but the source of the storm is revealed to be DARKSEID! He may have been too late to stop the wedding itself, but he is in time to bring the happy occasion to a grinding halt... and for that he gets quite a kick out of his efforts (Pic 2). 💥💥💥 This would be the last issue of the series Kirby would write/draw... but the relationship of Scott & Barda, their marriage and true love, has become a hallmark of the DC Universe. #JackedKirby - When Super Skrulls Attack... 💥💥💥 The Super Skrull, real name Kl’rt, first appeared in Fantastic Four #Issue18 (Sept of 1963) it is another example of Jack and Stan doubling down on an existing creation and making him even cooler! An agent of the evil Skrull empire, Kl’rt is bestowed the powers of the FF through the use of a powerful beam from the Skrull homeworld. Using these powers he tried to defeat the FF, but failed. But it wasn’t for lack of effort... as he would show up numerous times to do battle with the FF and other heroes throughout the years! 💥💥💥 One such occasion is this appearance in Thor #Issue142 from July of 1967. On the cover we can see that Kl’rt is battling Thor right here on Earth, and he is giving him a run for his money! 💥💥💥 The next 4 images in this post show us the Super Skrull utilizing the different powers of the FF. In pic 1 we see him Flame On like the Human Torch, in pic 2 we see him turn into Orange Rock like the Thing, pic 3 we see him elasticize himself like Mr Fantastic and in pic 4 we see him utilizing the invisible shield powers of Sue Storm... all in all a tough target for Thor, but one Thor certainly overcomes! #JackedKirby - Happy St. Patrick's Day from Jack Kirby Pt. 1: Nasty Little Man interior splash title page, from Black Magic #Issue18 which was published in November of 1952... 🍀🍀🍀 Jack and Joe Simon's classic Pre Comic Code horror comic Black Magic is a treasure trove of goodness, and on this St. Patrick's Day we found this gem. 🍀🍀🍀 Nasty Little Man is a story about three hobos that hop aboard a freight train heading for California and encounter Paddy O'Day, a real life leprechaun!!! 🍀🍀🍀 Paddy is angered by the men disturbing him, and when he lets them know the three bums decide to enact some vigilante justice on the little guy. He holds them off by producing some gold & diamonds out of thin air to please them... But the riches are suddenly turned to coal by O'Day to mock the homeless men in true trickster fashion! 🍀🍀🍀 The men attack O'Day and he uses his magic powers to cause an avalanche to save himself. The first man dies in the train accident, and the two surviving men flee the accident site. O'Day catches one of them and the final victim fleas in terror... 🍀🍀🍀 The lone survivor, The Professor, gets medical attention and is nervous that O'Day will come for him... But the doctors assure him he is safe at the hospital.
