The Fantastic 4 cover I did a while ago for Marvel Comics, love the contrast idea from my editor to put this quiet peaceful scene in front of the battlefield.
summary: johnnyâs your long time best friend & research partner :)Â
warnings: none
word count: 1,598 words
author's note: guys, I DONT KNOW SHIT about science, please bear with me. ALSO i recommend for u guys to listen to the rolling stones âbeast of burdenâ after or during this. ENJOOYYY
âYou know, Johnny⊠if the Van Allen belts started fluctuating from quantum leakage, say from another dimension, the radiation wouldnât follow any known EM spectrum. Itâd be unstable. Mutagenic, even.â
Johnny turned, brows raised, his face half-lit in the warm wash of the overhead fluorescents.
âWhat?â he asked flatly, blinking like heâd only caught the last few words.
You leaned back in your chair, frowning slightly. âIâm saying, what if those cosmic rays arenât just echoes from the Big Bang? What if somethingâs coming through? Something new.â
He rubbed at the back of his neck. âBleed-through from another dimension via radiation spikes? Thatâd violate conservation laws,â he said.
You exhaled, fogging the rim of your empty mug. You stared into it for a moment, then stood.
âGive me a second. I need more caffeine.â
Johnny nodded. âYeah. Iâll throw something on to keep myself awake.â
The clock read 12:21 a.m. The Baxter Building was quiet nowâmuted circuits humming like distant crickets, floor lights casting long shadows. You returned to the spare study room, sliding the glass door almost shut behind you.
The soft buzz of vinyl static mixed with the familiar strum of the intro of Beast of Burden drifting from the corner turntable. Johnny stood in front of the chalkboard, chalk pinched delicately between his fingers, his posture all relaxed frustration, one hip cocked, his free hand in his hair. The board was scrawled with half-solved equations, almost unreadable notes on the margins of the board, pieces of a puzzle the two of you couldnât stop chasingâyour shared obsession.Â
âRolling Stones?â you asked, setting your refilled mug on the glass table.
âMhm,â he murmured, not looking away. âWeâve been at this for six hours. I need some music.â
You stepped beside him. Your shoulders brushed. Neither of you moved.
He was quietâlip pulled between his teeth, brow furrowedâand when he finally turned, it wasnât to answer you. It was just to see if you were stuck too. You met his gaze.
âYou wonât find the answers written on my face,â you said dryly.
He flirted, âYouâre sure? Itâs a nice face.â
You scoffed, eyes flicking back to the board. âAlright hotshot, think of the other dimension like a second membrane. Energy isnât lostâitâs exchanged. Like solar flares. But interdimensional.â
âBrane cosmology,â he said, the corners of his mouth twitching. âYouâre straying into string theory now. Careful, youâll give Reed ideas.â
âYouâd love that.â
Again, your shoulders brushedâcloser this time. Still, neither of you moved.
Johnny turned toward you, âRemember back in college when we used to talk about starting a rogue lab in Switzerland?â
You smiled. âWith solar panels and cows.â
âAnd that greenhouse you kept trying to design even though you killed every plant you owned.â
âYou said youâd handle the compost.â
His laugh was soft, nostalgic. The equations behind him faded into the background.
âThat was before you joined Reedâs think tank,â he said, tapping the badge on your lab coat.
âAnd before you got famous.â
Johnny smirked. âWas I ever not famous?â
You gave him a long, amused look. âStill as insufferable as before.â
He grinned. âFuck off.â
Then, with sudden mock seriousness, he looked at you, wiggling his shoulders with a grin, dancing slightly as he sang off-key:
âAm I hard enough? Am I rough enough? Am I rich enoughââ
âDonât,â you warned, groaning.
âIâm not too blind to seeâŠâ he finished, grinning wide.
âYou are the burden, Johnny.â
He laughed. âClassic,â he said, unbothered. âItâs a masterpiece.â
âYouâre impossible, Iâm gonna tell Reed on you.â You tossed a piece of chalk at his shoulder, and he caught it with exaggerated flair.Â
He turned back to the board, started to writeâbut the chalk slipped. You both lunged for it at once. Your foreheads collided. A soft thunk. You hissed as hot coffee sloshed down the front of your shirt.
âShitâsorry!â Johnny reached out, panicked. He grabbed your lab coat from the table and patted your chest, trying to dry it.
âJohnny!â you snapped, slapping his hand away, half-shocked. You unbuttoned your shirt halfway as the heat soaked through the fabric. âItâs hot!â
âIâll get you something,â He hurried from the room.
He came back a minute later, a royal blue sweater in his hands. His. Familiar, soft, worn at the sleeves.
âSeriously?â you asked.
âItâs clean,â he said gently.
You took it and raised an eyebrow. âTurn around.â
He obeyed after a beat. âNothing I havenât seen before. And youâre the one who flashed half the dorm, remember?â
âThat was years ago,â you muttered. âAnd I was drunk.â
âYou were also covered in vomit. I was doing you a favor.â
âYouâre the worst.â
âJust sayingâit wasnât the worst night of my life.â
You rolled your eyes and pulled the sweater on. The scent hit first: warm, slightly smokyâlike campfire and ozone. It hung loose around you, the sleeves long past your wrists.
When you turned, he was already watching. So you threw your stained shirt at his chest.
âWhat the hell, I told you to turn around.â
He caught it, smiling sheepishly. âLike I said. Nothing I havenât seen.â
You crossed to the chalkboard, trying to regain your composure. He joined you, standing beside you, eyes flicking toward your face.
You pulled your hair back with a pencil, loose hair strands fell that framed your face prettily. When you looked up, he was still staring. Not glancing. Memorizing.
You raised an eyebrow. âI know Iâm pretty, flame boy. Try not to fall in love.â
He blinked, then laughed, the sound soft and careful. âYouâre so full of shit.â
âJust donât set the room on fire again like before, alright?â
He grinned, but it didnât reach his eyes all the way. âOnly if you stop wearing my clothes. Iâm trying to stay focused here.â
The song faded into quiet static behind you. You tried not to smile and neither of you moved away. You took a slow sip of coffee, the sweater warm against your skin. Too warm... or maybe that was just you.
