#JackedKirby - I Am... MODOK! 💥💥💥 One of the weirdest character designs that Jack ever dreamt up has to be the evil MODOK. MODOK stands for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing.... which is insane! He is basically a giant head with tiny arms and legs in a floating chair with telepathy powers... which is terrifying!!! But his unique design may have been inspired by an early Kirby/Simon horror story... 💥💥💥 Marvel’s MODOK first appeared in Tales of Suspense #issue93 briefly, but his first full on appearance is in Tales of Suspense #Issue94 from October of 1967. He is the leader of AIM because he has made the society of evil scientists his minions die to his mind control capabilities. The two full pages and close ups in this post (pics 1-4) come from this issue. He is fascinating in his floating chair, a true accomplishment of Kirby’s unique ability to tie technology into anything... but the way close up shows him out of his suit/chair and you can see his tiny arms/legs/torso. This reminded me of an older Kirby story I had seen... 💥💥💥 In Black Magic magazine for Prize comics back in 1954 Jack & Joe Simon had a story called Head of the Family (pic 5) that featured a patriarchal character with a similar anatomy to MODOK. Giant Head, little arms/legs/torso! And in 1973 when DC reprinted those old Black Magic issues Kirby drew a brand new cover, updating the original look of the character to look even MORE like MODOK!!! (Pic 6). 💥💥💥 MODOK is still very active in the Marvel Universe and a favorite villain of mine as well. #JackedKirby - Odin in his battle armor! 💥💥💥 I thought this Splash Page was a great companion piece to yesterday’s Ajak/Eternals Page I posted.... this one comes from The Mighty Thor #Issue159 from December of 1968. Thor’s dad, Odin, is portrayed in a serious suit of battle armor.... and it’s quite similar to some ancient designs we will see later in Kirby’s work! 💥💥💥 This is actually quite an important issue of Thor because this is when Odin actually informs the alter ego of Thor, Donald Blake, that he is in fact Thor the God of Thunder!!!! 💥💥💥 Odin always played a significant background character in Jack’s Asgardian stories, but what other writer/artists did with the character in the future is magnificent! They turned him into the warrior that Jack wanted him to be... and he could have been had Jack been allowed to create more stories including him! 💥💥💥 Gotta love his insane detailed chain mail and helm.... both Kirby staples! #JackedKirby - Captured by the Creature from Krogarr!!! 🛸🛸🛸 What a cool creature for such a ridiculous story! The Creature from Krogarr appears in #Issue25 of Tales to Astonish published in November of 1961. It was the lead/cover story in the “monster of the month” anthology and Jack drew one hell of a creature for something that isn’t given a name! 🛸🛸🛸 In the story a broke human down on his luck sees a broadcast on his tv featuring the alien from Krogarr. The alien promises him good fortune if he allows he to pass through the TV to travel from Krogarr to Earth... which he does. He is instantly held captive and transported back to Krogarr, where the aliens begin to plan an invasion of Earth via the TV broadcast. But as they proceed to make the jump to Earth, the human fades away and disappears, breaking the travel link... they blame the Krogarr scientist who invented the machine, but the real reason the portal to earth closed is because the man didn’t pay his electrical bill and his TV lost power!!! 🛸🛸🛸 A dumb story... sure. But an awesome alien creature courtesy of Kirby more than makes up for it. #JackedKirby - A Fan letter from a future Marvel Legend... 💥💥💥 Back in 1963 the Fantastic Four was chugging along at the head of the Marvel line of comics. The flagship title was being commandeered by Jack and Stan towards the top of the sales charts, but not everyone who was reading it was 100% satisfied with the finished product! Case in point a certain letter that was published in #Issue19 from October of 1963. 💥💥💥 The letter totally rips the Dream Team did their inconsistencies in storytelling and filler issues... and it takes particular exceptions with #Issue13 published in April of 1963. It came from the mind of a 16 year old Steve Gerber... the same Steve Gerber who would go onto create Howard the Duck for Marvel in 1973!!! 💥💥💥 The letter isn’t wrong... frankly he hits the nail on the head more then a few times. Even though my opinion of “The Run” (Jack & Stan’s 102 Issue run on the FF) is high there are some clunkers in there... and #Issue14 isn’t their best work! I love his ripping of the cover and all the blurbs... we get it, it’s all so important!!! (See pic 2) I am especially shocked at Gerber ripping the team up of Kirby and Ditko on this book... Ditko inked Kirby’s pencils. I think they are really good, and always like Ditko inking Kirby. See the third pic and make the decision for yourself!!! You also gotta love Stan’s snarky remarks in his response... typical Stanley Lieber laying it on thick!!!! 💥💥💥 The irony here is that when Gerber would eventually get into a legal battle with Marvel over the rights to the character Kirby would step up to help him. They collaborated on a few issues of Destroyer Duck to raise money for Gerber’s “Defense Fund” in battling Marvel!!! #JackedKirby - The Mole Man Returns... 💥💥💥 One of the greatest foes the FF ever faced has to be The Mole Man, denizen of the deep earth and once known as simply Harvey Rupert Elder. He is the leader of the Moloids, a group of subterranean monsters that live in Subterranea under the surface! 💥💥💥 He also was the very first foe of the FF in the comics... he appeared in Issue 1 and came back many times along the way. But one of the last times he would appear courtesy of the King would be in #Issue89 which was published in August of 1969. 💥💥💥 The Mole Man returns with a great idea... he plans on blinding the world so they can understand what it is like to be without sight! A crazy plan that almost works... before it is fouled by the team supreme!!!
