#JackedKirby - Stan and Jack play a part in the story... 💥💥💥 That’s them, right on the cover of #Issue10 of the Fantastic Four!!! Published in January of 1963, this issue of the FF features the writer and artist of the series as key members of the actual story... Both Kirby and Stan are pressed into the service of the one and only Dr. Doom in an attempt to trap Reed & The FF!!! 💥💥💥 This issue is the return of Dr Doom, believed to have been sucked into outer space in #Issue6 of the FF. He shows up at the Marvel office and demands Kirby/Lee help him contact Reed Richards so that he can spring a trap on him... which they do because they want Reed and the crew to come save them!!! 💥💥💥 The two pages in the story featuring Jack and Stan are great... they are lamenting the loss of such a great villain in Doom, and he just shows up!!! I also love how Kirby never directly drew the faces of himself or Lee... he left it up to the readers to figure it all out!!! On a side note I’m not really a fan of Reed’s face on this cover... something about it seems “Un-Kirby” to me. #JackedKirby - Kilgrave by Kirby/Coletta!!! 😈😈😈 Early on in Daredevil’s run the company was struggling to find an artist who could get the look of the character right and also turn work in on time... Bill Everett handle pencils on Issue 1, Joe Orlando did issues 2/3/4 and then Wally Wood took over... but it was Jack Kirby and Vince Coletta who brought the first 5 covers of the series to life! #Issue4, published in October of 1964, features a great future villain in his first appearance, Kilgrave the Purple Man! Kilgrave has the power to control minds, and would appear throughout the next 20-30 years of Marvel continuity as a minor villain and supporting character at best... that is until Brian Michael Bendis made him the chief advisory for Jessica Jones in the 2001 series Alias! 😈😈😈 On the Netflix version of Jessica Jones Kilgrave is portrayed by David Tenant and unfortunately (SPOILERS) doesn’t make it back for Season 2... but having just finished up Season 2 of Jessica Jones I was surprised when he popped back up (Not in a flashback!) and how innovative the show runners were in finding a way to work him in! 😈😈😈 All 5 of the covers that Kirby/Coletta did we’re fantastic... but this one to me is the best! #JackedKirby - A Marvel Writer/Artist credit for Jack... 💥💥💥 Chamber of Darkness was an anthology horror comic that Marvel created to rival DC’s very popular House of Mystery/House of Secrets series... and despite the fact that it had EVERYONE at Marvel contributing to it (Wrightson, Buscema, Romita, Windsor-Smith, Goodwin, Thomas,etc) in some form it only lasted 8 issues before it became a reprint only book called Monsters on the Prowl with Issue 9. But an early issue gives us something that was quite rare at the time: a story written and pencilled by Jack Kirby!!! 💥💥💥 #Issue5 was published in June of 1970 and featured the Kirby vehicle “And Fear Shall Follow” which Jack is credited as the writer and penciller of. Now this isn’t such a big deal... but it’s one of the few times in Jack’s first stint at Marvel that he received a writers credit! 💥💥💥 Jack has long rumored to have been a very integral part of the writing process on most of the books he was drawing for Marvel (like FF and Thor) but Stan Lee is suspiciously credited as solo writer on those stories... which many believe led to Jack leaving for rival DC in 1971. Either way, Jack wrote/penciled two stories for Chamber of Darkness (issue 4/5) and received credit for both! #JackedKirby - Bring On The Hellfire!!! Ghost Rider has a storied history with Marvel Comics, especially during the 1990s when he was one of the most popular characters at the company. He first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #Issue 5 in 1972 and would later get his own series in 1973. I know what you are thinking now... what the hell does this have to do with Kirby? The character itself has nothing to do with Jack. He was created by Gary Friedrich and Ro Thomas. But.... Jack did get a chance to draw the leather clad skeleton hero a few times, when he did 3 guest covers on the series!!! The Ghost rider series was bi-monthly back in 1976/77, and Jack was brought in to do the covers on #Issues21 through #issue23. I am highlighting #Issue23 which was published in April of 1977. Jack creates a pretty mediocre cover here with Ghost Rider atop his motorcycle and being menaced by the watery creation of the Water Wizard. It's all pretty basic... but there is one cool element that is featured here that might be important to Ghost Rider moving forward. This is the first issue where Ghost Rider used his Hellfire blasts to burn another persons soul... a power that has become synonymous with the character. S you can see in the cover, GR's hand is engulfed in flame and he is shooting it at the elemental creation. So is this literally THE FIRST TIME Ghost Rider is using his Hellfire blasts? Possibly... and it is in a Jack Kirby cover! Just another minor tidbit about Jack and how even when he is making a small contribution to a character or a run on a book it always seems to coincide with something major happening. Coincidence?
