#JackedKirby - Annuals... Kirby Style!!! 💥🇺🇸💥 Doing some research for another Kirby topic on his 70s FF covers brought me to these two intertwined Annuals from June of 1976 and I just had to share! 💥🇺🇸💥 When Kirby returned to Marvel in 1975 from DC he jumped back into the mix doing some covers before getting back on the Captain American train in the lead up the the countries Bicentennial. Marvel had some great ideas in the pipeline for Cap in our wonderful countries 200tb year... specifically a huge tabloid size Treasury Edition caller Bicentennial Battles!!! But that wouldn’t be the only time Jack would be getting patriotic in 1976... 💥🇺🇸💥 One of the cool things about Kirby’s return to Marvel was him revisiting his greatest co-creations, The Fantastic Four. He couldn’t exactly walk back in and just take over the book, but he was given the chance to do covers starting with #Annual11 (Pic 1) and continuing for a few issues after that. In this issue the FF travel back in time and encounter The Invaders, including Cap and Namor. The interior was written by HouseRoy Thomas and drawn by Big John Buscema. But this story was so large it had to be continued... 💥🇺🇸💥 Enter the Marvel Two In One series, who was also publishing their first annual in June of ‘76. Also written by Thomas but drawn by Sal Buscema, this issue featured another golden age group of heroes... The Liberty Legion! #JackedKirby - Introducing The Scarecrow!!! 💥💥💥 Jack introduced and co-created many characters during his time at Marvel... but he also had hands in dozens of characters that he had NOTHING TO DO WITH CREATING by drawing the covers of their first appearances. Like Spider-Man, Daredevil And Iron Man... just cause Jack didn’t do the pencils and creating if the characters doesn’t mean he didn’t have some hand in their grand entrances to the world of Marvel Comics! 💥💥💥 Now for every huge character like the fellas we named above that Jack did covers for their first appearance, we have some awesome MINOR characters that got the same treatment via The King... like Ebenezer Laughton aka The Scarecrow! 💥💥💥 Appearing in the Don Heck/Stan Lee story The Sinister Scarecrow in Tales of Suspense #Issue51 (March of 1964), The Scarecrow is a former circus performer who witnessed Iron Man chasing a criminal. He used his athletic prowess to apprehend the criminal... and then he decides to try his hand in making some money as a criminal himself. His first target... mega-rich billionaire Tony Stark! This puts him directly in the crosshairs of Ole Shellhead... and many, many more heroes to come! 💥💥💥 Jack may not have had much input into the character or his design, but the first time anyone ever seen him was drawn by him on that cover! So it’s a tie to yet another character for The King... and you gotta love Jack’s version of the character. #JackedKirby - What Price Victory? 💥💥💥 I for one love it when Jack gets a shot to draw a character from his past that he isn’t quite as known for.... and this issue is the last time he would draw Iron Man on a cover in a LONG time! 💥💥💥 Tales of Suspense #Issue71 came out in November of 1965 when the book was a split between Captain America and Shellhead. At the time both were getting these feature stories in addition to appearing in The Avengers, although some thought was being put towards which characters from the anthology books could carry their own series. The cover rotated month to month, with Iron Man on one month and Cap on the next... and even though he was only doing pencils on the Cap portion of the interiors Jack would often do ALL the covers, even if it was an Iron Man month. Don Heck would usually do the Iron Man story pencils. But that would soon change.... 💥💥💥 Gene “The Dean” Colman is widely recognized as one of the premier Marvel artists of the 60s/70s and his most famous work is on Iron Man. Once he began drawing the interior Stan also decided he could do the covers for that months Tales of Suspense.... which meant Jack would get a break! Not really.... it meant Jack had a bit more time to probably do something else! But Colan’s Iron Man art is awesome, and so were his covers. They remain an important part of his legacy throughout his tenure at Marvel! 💥💥💥 This cover represents the last time Jack had Iron Man cover duties on the title. Featuring Iron Man battling The Titanium Man, we get Tony in a vintage Kirby action pose delivering a fistful of Iron to his enemy!!! A fitting farewell for Kirby’s time portraying the character on these beautiful covers! #JackedKirby - When Super Skrulls Attack... 💥💥💥 The Super Skrull, real name Kl’rt, first appeared in Fantastic Four #Issue18 (Sept of 1963) it is another example of Jack and Stan doubling down on an existing creation and making him even cooler! An agent of the evil Skrull empire, Kl’rt is bestowed the powers of the FF through the use of a powerful beam from the Skrull homeworld. Using these powers he tried to defeat the FF, but failed. But it wasn’t for lack of effort... as he would show up numerous times to do battle with the FF and other heroes throughout the years! 💥💥💥 One such occasion is this appearance in Thor #Issue142 from July of 1967. On the cover we can see that Kl’rt is battling Thor right here on Earth, and he is giving him a run for his money! 💥💥💥 The next 4 images in this post show us the Super Skrull utilizing the different powers of the FF. In pic 1 we see him Flame On like the Human Torch, in pic 2 we see him turn into Orange Rock like the Thing, pic 3 we see him elasticize himself like Mr Fantastic and in pic 4 we see him utilizing the invisible shield powers of Sue Storm... all in all a tough target for Thor, but one Thor certainly overcomes! #JackedKirby - The Boy Commandos meet Batman!!! 💥💥💥 Back in the early 40s Jack and his partner Joe Simon were making a name for themselves over at DC Comics. They had the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian, The Sandman and the Boy Commandos in full swing as the country inched closer to war... a war that Jack and Joe would both be fighting in a bit later on. 💥💥💥 The Boy Commandos were quite popular around this time, so the DC brass decided to put them into one of their lead books, Detective Comics. Detective Comics has become synonymous with Batman over the years... but originally it had more of an Anthology Style. So the powers that be enlisted Simon/Kirby to include a Boy Commando story.... and even gave them some cover space to strut their stuff!!! 💥💥💥 The cover image is credited to Kirby, Simon and Jerry Robinson. If I had to guess I’d say the Kirby/Simon drew the Boys and Robinson drew Bats for the sake of artistic continuity. Then the title placards and blurbs would be added. 💥💥💥 Inside the issue the Batman story (a great one called the “ The Cop who hated Batman) appeared first, with the Commando story (Nostradamus Predicts...) coming up second. I’ve also included the opening splash of the Commando’s story to show off Kirby/Simon’s pre WWII art style... Really love the way they did these war era stories, and the art is killer!!! #JackedKirby - Stan and Jack play a part in the story... 💥💥💥 That’s them, right on the cover of #Issue10 of the Fantastic Four!!! Published in January of 1963, this issue of the FF features the writer and artist of the series as key members of the actual story... Both Kirby and Stan are pressed into the service of the one and only Dr. Doom in an attempt to trap Reed & The FF!!! 💥💥💥 This issue is the return of Dr Doom, believed to have been sucked into outer space in #Issue6 of the FF. He shows up at the Marvel office and demands Kirby/Lee help him contact Reed Richards so that he can spring a trap on him... which they do because they want Reed and the crew to come save them!!! 💥💥💥 The two pages in the story featuring Jack and Stan are great... they are lamenting the loss of such a great villain in Doom, and he just shows up!!! I also love how Kirby never directly drew the faces of himself or Lee... he left it up to the readers to figure it all out!!! On a side note I’m not really a fan of Reed’s face on this cover... something about it seems “Un-Kirby” to me.
