#JackedKirby - A Man With A Pencil I saw an excerpt on Facebook from Kamandi #Issue32 (August of 1975) in which there was a behind the scenes featurette about Jack... so I immediately sought it out. Apparently Issue 32 is a Giant Suze special issue, so DC needed some extra content to go along with that months story. Along with reprinting Issue 1 of Kamandi, the issue featured a 4 page text article by Steve Sherman about Jack’s process. It featured some cool candid pics, behind the scenes details of Kirby’s process and a birds eye view into his lifestyle in Thousand Oaks, California. A very cool piece of content. #JackedKirby - A Neanderthal... Kirby Style!!! One of the coolest things about Kirby’s 70s series for both DC & Marvel has to be his best is constantly bending genres within the confines of the books. Like Devil Dinosaur is supposed to be a prehistoric title and Kirby sprinkles in Aliens, or how Black Panther is supposed to be a jungle action adventure book that is infused with gangsters in pinstripe suits looking for treasures.... it’s an interesting knack that Jack figures out to weave very interesting storylines into each title. Take for example this issue of the Demon. #Issue3 of the Demon (published November of 1972) is firmly set in the horror genre, with a hideous demon of hell as the main character and occult madness galore. But this issue features out of time cavemen, mind controlling madmen and dinosaurs... all@done in Kirby’s unique stylings! This Neanderthal caveman opens the issue on the opening splash page. You don’t necessarily KNOW that it’s a caveman out of time... but it is abundantly clear that he is far from normal. And Kirby’s unique facial construction really drives that home. #JackedKirby - A Wizard and his Demon... 💥💥💥 Everyone who follows the page knows I am a HUGE fan of The Demon series... but the more I read it, the more I find more gems.... like this beauty opening splash page from #Issue5 of the series (January of 1973). 💥💥💥 We get this BEAUTIFUL shot of Etrigan, in strike pose ready to pounce, flanked by his master... The Wizard Merlin has never looked so cool!!! Look at the detail in his hooded cloak... it’s phenomenal! 💥💥💥 This series is loaded with amazing images and slash pages (so many splash pages!!!) but this has to be one of my faves... #JackedKirby - So Long Denny O’Neil... thanks for the memories! 💥💥💥 I just saw the news that the legendary comic book writer Denny O’Neil has left us at the age of 81.... this is a very sad day. As a HUGE Batman fan, Denny’s time on that book with Neil Adams is not only monumental in itself but set the stage for generations of Batman stories to come. His version of The Batman... as he wrote him... is the definitive accepted version now. And for that I am forever grateful... 💥💥💥 I’m not 100% sure if Jack Kirby and Denny O’Neil collaborated on anything else in their storybook careers, but I did remember one PARTICULAR time the dynamic duo were paired up... it was towards the end of Jack’s time at DC and he was doing a lot of random assignments... 💥💥💥 We get to see Jack illustrate Denny’s famous words in Richard Dragon, Kung Fu Fighter #Issue3 from September of 1975. The character was based on a novel that Denny had wrote under the pseudonym Jim Dennis, which was published in 1974. A short time later DC decided to publish a comic version of the characters exploits, with various creatives drawing/writing the first few issues until Denny came in on Issue 3 till 10 and Roc Estrada doing most of the art from issue 4 on. But Issue 3 needed a fill in artist... so they got The King! The rest is kung fu history! 💥💥💥 I enjoy this series and love Estrada’s art, but I do love Kirby’s take on the character... especially his deadly hands that are emphasized in Kirby’s art! A great collaboration from two legends. #JackedKirby - Superman... or Mister Miracle via Mexico? 💥💥💥 I love a foreign reprint as much as the next guy, but Mexico was on some next level stuff when they began producing reprints of famous DC comics in the 70s/80s. 💥💥💥 Trying to capitalize on the more WELL KNOWN heroes (Batman/Wonder Woman/Superman), Mexican publisher Anguila Novaro used the Big 3s names as the titles of the books... even if they didn’t appear in those books AT ALL! 💥💥💥 Take this one for example. This is #Issue1425 of the Superman series... you can see the issue number stamper on the top left corner box. But in reality it’s a reprint of Mister Miracle #Issue1 from 1971.... Superman is no where to be found! This was published in Mexico in 1984 by Novaro Anguila publishing. 💥💥💥 In a cool piece of trivia, even though Anguila Navarro reprinted over 1500 books under the “Superman” title masthead, just 42 of those issues featured a character NOT Superman in the cover/issue. That makes this book super rare in the sense that even though there many be plenty of Mexican reprints out there, only a very small percentage of the ones featuring someone other then The title characters are out in the world being resold! #JackedKirby - The Future of Film... The Mind Phones!!! 💥💥💥 There are a million instances of Jack adding something to his comic books that didn’t exist technologically at the time but have come to be developed... but in none of his series does this happen more then OMAC. No matter how short the run actually was (8 issues), it is loaded with numerous examples of “tech to come”... 💥💥💥 Check out the opening splash in OMAC #issue3 (February of 1975). OMAC is at the Global Peace Agency and he is lying on a table with a very weird apparatus strapped to his head. His eyes are covered by the massive tech... and we are told he is using the “Mind Phones”. 💥💥💥 Inside the googles OMAC is in Virtual Reality, fighting a giant dragon monster... but he is simply safe and sound, lying there on the table!!!! #JackedKirby - The Evil Ones!!! 💀💀💀 I am a big fan of the Kamandi run Jack completed at DC. Not only is it his longest stint for the company, but it is loaded with amazing visuals and great storytelling all from The King by himself! 💀💀💀 I was looking through #Issue24 of the series (December of 1974) and found this awesome interior splash page to post. I love when Kirby broke his series/comics into “chapters”. Not only did it compartmentalize the elements of the story, but if allowed Kirby more opportunities to complete SPLASH PAGES! 💀💀💀 This issue deals with a death cult, an evil Curse, a house of dangerous outcomes and a host of awesome looking characters! On this page Jack ties all of these elements together and presents them in beautiful harmony!!! I included the original inks (pic 1) and the recolored image from the recent omnibus release (pic 2) for various ways to digest the work.
