Itâs been a long day, and looking back, David wants to blame what he says on the fact that he left one of the critical products in his nighttime skin care routine back at the motel and is therefore already out of sorts, because when Patrick climbs into bed with a sultry expression on his face the words slip out.
âCan we not do this tonight?â
Patrick freezes.
David feels a hot rush of shame, rushing to retract his words. Â âNo, I didnât mean, come here-â Â
âDavid, whatâs wrong?â Â Patrick turns on the bedside lamp and studies David. Â âWhatâs the matter?â
âNothing, Iâm sorry,â David says, his heart racing. Â He pushes himself up and loops his arms around Patrick, leaning in for a kiss.
âDavid, wait, itâs okay.â Â Patrick disentangles them and gives David an appraising look. Â âIs it your head? Did you leave your contacts in too long? Â Iâll get you some ibuprofen.â Â He jumps out of bed before David can stop him, heading for the medicine cabinet.
David could take the out, swallow the pills and let Patrick pet his hair and hold him close. Â He could so easily have a headache, or a stomachache, or want to get to sleep early. Â But thatâs not the real reason he doesnât want to fool around.
âPatrick, I have to tell you something.â
âI know you only like the gelcaps, David.â Â Patrick returns with the bottle of painkillers in one hand and a glass of water in the other. Â
âThatâs not it,â David says.
âOkay, what is it? Â What can I do for you?â Â Heâs sincere. Â If David said he had a little-known medical condition that required him to stand naked in the woods under the light of a full moon, Patrick would strip down to keep him company and get out the bug spray.
Itâs almost too much to take. Â Patrick is so earnest, so adorable, sitting on the edge of the bed in his sleep pants and worn t-shirt, ready to take care of David. Â David loves him so much, more than he ever imagined he could love anyone. Â Patrick is proof that David is capable of all-encompassing, full-on grown-up love. Â And what David is about to say could ruin it all.
âPut down the pills, Patrick. Â Theyâre not going to help.â
Patrick frowns. Â âTheyâre extra strength.â
David gives him a look, and Patrick shrugs. Â âFine. Â Will you at least drink some water? Â You could be dehydrated.â
âItâs not that simple.â
âThen whatâs going on?â
Patrick has told him he makes him feel right. Â That he loves David. Â And David believes him. Â So heâs got to say this. Â Itâs only going to get worse if he doesnât.
He takes a deep breath and wills himself to say the words. Â âIâm asexual.â Â
Patrick finally puts the glass of water down. Â âBut we have sex all the time.â
âIâm not sex repulsed. Â I like sex, sometimes.â
Patrickâs brow creases. Â âI donât understand.â
Look it up, a small, scared part of David wants to say. Â But this is Patrick, and David feels a connection with him that heâs never felt with anyone else. Â Even if what he feels with Patrick didnât magically make him allo, David doesnât want to wreck this, not if thereâs the smallest chance that Patrick wonât run.
He tugs on Patrickâs shirt, encouraging him closer until theyâre facing each other on the bed, Davidâs hands finding Patrickâs. Â Heâs shaking, or Patrick is.
âWhen I was a teenager, I figured out that I was good at sex. Really good. And that made meâŠâ He shakes his head, trying to get the words out. âIt made me feel special. It gave me power, a different kind than the money. People wanted to be around me, wanted to be with me. Boys and girls, men and women. For a while, as long as the sex was good, theyâd stay. Eventually everyone would get tired of me, because I was too clingy, or whatever, but I could always find someone else because everyone knew Iâd show them a good time.â
âBut you didnât⊠enjoy it?â Patrick says, pained.
âSometimes I did, sometimes I didnât. But I wasnât sexually attracted to them most of the time. I didnât like thinking about that⊠aspect. I hoped that I just hadnât met the right person yet, that things would change.â David doesnât admit that heâd only let go of that particular wish in the past few months. âThe closest Iâve been able to figure, Iâm probably gray ace, panromantic, generally sex favorable.â
David can practically see the gears turning in Patrickâs head. âPanromantic meansâŠ?â
âI can be romantically attracted to people of any gender. Â I can be in a romantic relationship - I want to be in a romantic relationship. Â With you, obviously.â Â If you still want me, David thinks.
âDavid⊠why didnât you tell me?â
David lets go of Patrickâs hands, flopping over on his back to stare at the ceiling. Â He canât say this while looking at Patrick. Â âWe live in a culture of compulsory sexuality. Â Sex is expected - youâre expected to want to have sex, to desire it, to be unable to resist the urge. Â I donât, not that way. Â I got tired of people calling me a prude, or frigid. Â Or a sociopath.â Â The words burn as he says them. Â âThatâs what some people think when they hear âasexual.ââ
âI donât think that,â Patrick says, urgent. Â âI swear I donât.â Â He moves towards David, then stops himself. Â âI really want to hug you,â he says quietly. Â âCan I?â
David opens his arms and Patrick slides close, digging his face into Davidâs neck as his arms go around him. Â They hold on tight to each other for a few long moments, David breathing in the familiar scent of Patrickâs store brand laundry detergent while Patrick rubs circles on Davidâs back.
âYou like this, right?â Â Patrick asks tentatively. Â âThis is real?â
Davidâs heart aches. Â âYes.â
Patrick releases him slowly, pulling his arms back toward his own body. Â âI canât help thinking that I made you do stuff you didnât want to do. Â I wish you told me you didnât want to.â
âItâs not like that,â David says, over a lump in his throat he didnât realize was there. Â His enjoyment/slash/tolerance for sex is complicated and seems to change from day to day, heâs not sure he even really understands it himself. Â But itâs not like he didnât consent. Â âItâs more like -- say you asked me if I like graham crackers. Â I donât love them, but I donât hate them either. Â And Iâm not going to go out looking for gourmet graham crackers to stock in the store. Â But if weâre on a camping trip and you make sâmores, Iâm absolutely going to enjoy eating them.â
Patrick blinks, his eyes glistening with tears. Â âPutting aside the unlikelihood of you going camping, are you sure you donât just like sâmores because of the chocolate?â
David laughs despite his nerves. Â âSo itâs not like exactly like sâmores. Â Maybe itâs like tea. Â I can make you tea even though I donât want any. Â Or, I might make some for both of us?â
âFine,â David huffs, and he gives up on the analogies. Â Theyâre just making him hungry anyway. Â He closes his eyes and thinks about kissing Patrick until he makes that desperate sound in the back of his throat, about what itâs like to wrap his hand around Patrickâs cock and hear him whimper in pleasure. Â âI like making you feel good, and it makes me feel good too. Â Itâs intimate, and emotional. Â But I donât need sex. Â I donât crave it.â
Itâs clear Patrick is trying to process everything, despite feeling hurt. Â âYou arenât attracted to me,â Patrick says, a tear finally escaping and sliding down his cheek.
âNot sexually.â Â David swallows hard. Â âAt least, not most of the time. Â But I am aesthetically, sensually, and romantically attracted to you.â
âSensually?â
David lets his hands flutter to Patrickâs shoulders, giving them a squeeze, and then slides his hands down Patrickâs lovely arms. Â âI like to touch you, and kiss you.â Â He bites his lip. Â âI like it a lot. Â I like being close with you.â
Patrick looks away, seeming to choose his next question carefully. Â âDoes it make you uncomfortable that I, um, want you?â
âNo. Â Not with you.â Â David bites his lip. Â âI actually like it. Â Thatâs pathetically hypocritical, I know. Â
âWhat do you mean?â
âThat I enjoy your⊠desire⊠but I canât give you that, exactly.â He trails off, waiting for Patrick to agree that itâs unfair, but he doesnât.
Instead, he seems to accept it, and move on to what is inevitably the next question. Â Usually the last question. Â âWhat does this mean for us?â Â
âNothing has to change,â David starts, and Patrick interrupts him.
âAre you kidding? Â How - how could that be?â
It stings, hearing the pain in Patrickâs voice, but itâs understandable. Â âOkay, youâre right, not nothing, because youâll know more about why I might not want to have sex sometimes. Â And that might be hard to deal with. Â But hopefully having it out in the open will be better for both of us.â Â I wonât have to pretend, he thinks to himself, but manages not to say it. Â âWe can, um, communicate better.â
âWhy would we have sex at all?â
âBecause you want to.â
âHow can I enjoy it if you donât? Â That sounds - that sounds wrong, David. Â Iâm not gonna do stuff with you that you donât want to do.â
âWe wonât.â David sighs. âI told you, Iâm not sex repulsed. Itâs hard to explain⊠I like a lot of the aspects of sex. Itâs intimate. It still makes me feel special.â David ducks his head, afraid of saying too much. âWeâll talk about it some more, as much as you want. Assuming you still want anything to do with this,â he waves his hand at himself.
âOf course I do. Â David...â Â
David hates himself for doing this to Patrick, who thought he had everything related to sexuality all figured out, that David was his Mariah Carey and the world made finally made sense.
âIâm sorry, this is a lot, I know you probably think Iâm weird-â
Patrick surges forward and wraps his arms tightly around David. Â âYouâre not weird. Â Youâre not.â
David isnât sure how long they stay like that, wrapped around each other, David curled into Patrick and grounding himself with the sound of Patrickâs heartbeat. Â Eventually emotional exhaustion overcomes the thrum of panic in his chest and he falls asleep in Patrickâs arms. Â
*****
David wakes before their alarm and stumbles out of bed to use the bathroom. Â When he comes out, he realizes that Patrickâs reader is on the floor next to the bed. Â He canât help it if it clicks on when he picks it up.
âHey,â Patrick says, and David hastily sets the reader on the nightstand.
âHey. Â Do you, um, want some tea? Â Not - you know, analogy tea, I mean, just tea.â
Patrick laughs, his voice gravelly with sleep. Â âNo, thanks. Â Come back to bed, if, um, you want to?â
Itâs awkward, theyâre both stammering like middle schoolers, but it could be a lot worse. Â David lets out a breath, grateful that at least Patrick is still here. Â He slides under the duvet and wraps himself up, the sheets warm with Patrickâs body heat.
He canât relax, though, his curiosity too strong to ignore.
âWere you, um, up late?â
Patrick nods, knowing what David is asking. Â âI saw that book on your Amazon list a few months ago. Â Thought it might be time to give it a read.â
âYou read the whole thing?â Â It had taken David a few nights to get through it, even though he was particularly motivated.
âNot all of it. A lot. It was⊠really helpful. Eye-opening. The part about compulsory sexuality hit home, for sure. I definitely experienced that growing up, the expectation to have sex with girls, the prioritizing of sexual relationships. The guys on my baseball team were always talking about sex. The longer I went without having sex with Rachel, the more pressure I felt. It was always just a question of when, and how often, not if. My parents didnât help, either. They were so interested in me having a girlfriend, and then hitting all the milestones. They definitely expected that I would be eager to have sex as soon as possible.â
âReally?â
Patrick buries his head in the pillow. Â âMy dad bought me condoms and lube when I was fourteen, and gave me new ones every so often âjust in case.â Â It was horrifying.â
David pats his back. Â âMmm, Iâm sorry.â
Patrick turns his head to look at David. Â âIt had to have been even worse for you. Â When did you figure out you were ace?â
âI donât know. Â Not soon enough.â
âDo you feel⊠bad about it?â
David pauses, doing a quick internal assessment, and heâs not surprised at what he finds. Â âI wish I could say no. Â Not as bad as I once did, but. Â Itâs hard to let it go.â
âCanIhugyou?â Patrick asks.
David burrows into him, letting Patrick soothe him with his strong hands and tender caresses.
âYou know, you donât have to ask before you hug me,â David says, gently teasing, even though he kind of loves that Patrick asked.
âI donât want to screw up.â
âPlease, this is not screwing up,â David says. Â âYou can ask me whatever you want. Â Just not before ten a.m. next time.â Â Patrick snorts in response, the callback not lost to him.
David extracts himself enough from their embrace to frame Patrickâs face with his hands and kiss him gently, cheering internally when Patrick kisses him back, soft lips moving against Davidâs and tongue darting out into Davidâs mouth. Â âI love to kiss you,â he says, wanting to reassure Patrick that these moments that have meant so much to him are still good. Â He drags his lips over Patrickâs jaw, his lips catching on Patrickâs morning stubble. Â God, he doesnât want to lose him.
âIâm not going anywhere,â Patrick says, and David curses his early morning lack of filter. Â âI love you. Â I love this, being with you, being close. Â Weâll figure it out.â Â Patrick finds Davidâs eyes, and the confusion from the night before has been replaced with patented Patrick Brewer determination. Â âIâm not leaving you, David. Â Not over this. Â Hopefully not over anything, but definitely not over this. Â You donât have to perform sexuality with me for us to be happy together.â
David canât hide his smile, though he tries. Â âI love it when you talk dirty.â
Patrick laughs, and Davidâs heart soars as Patrick presses silly kisses all over his face. Â Maybe itâs going to be okay after all.

End notes: Â T
he book Patrick reads is Ace: What Asexuality Reveals About Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex by Angela Chen, which I highly recommend. Â It wasnât published until just after the end of Season 6, but letâs handwave that. Â It definitely helped this David explain asexuality to Patrick. Â Another good resource is AVEN (Asexuality Visibility and Education Network), at https://www.asexuality.org/?q=overview.html.
Asexuality is experienced by different people in different ways. Â This is just how I imagine David might experience it.

After a lot of time wondering... I say my sexuality in none of my business either. I need myself to stop pestering me about it.
NO, I AM STILL NOT SURE IF I EVEN AM BISEXUAL, ASEXUAL, GRAY-ASEXUAL BIROMANTIC OR A FUCKING VELOCIRAPTOR.
YES, I AM AFRAID OF RELATIONSHIPS AND CAN'T FIGURE OUT IF IT'S OUT OF ANXIETY BECAUSE ITS UNKNOWN TO ME, BECAUSE I FEAR REJECTION AND ATTACHMENT OR BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE MY SEXUALITY IS A MESS AND DON'T WANT TO DRAG ANYONE ELSE WITH ME.
So SHUT THE FUCK UP ME, LEAVE ME ALONE.
The only thing I am 100% positive I am is lonely and stressed!!!
Hi so Iâm a very closeted pansexual and lately Ive been trying to figure out some things and I came across something called greysexuality and I was wondering if you could explain that a little?
Hello Anon! :D/
Grayasexual or grayace for short, is often defined as being ace but in a gray area! When I was first exploring my asexuality, it was a label I used myself for a bit! It's often described as an umbrella term for any ace identity that can't be specifically defined as having no sexual attraction. Meaning labels such as aceflux, acespike, demisexual, and any other label on the ace spectrum that can't really be defined as strictly experiencing no sexual attraction, are under the gray ace umbrella.
Someone also might ID as gray ace because they're still questioning their asexuality, experience very little sexual attraction but want to label it, or experience sexual attraction only under certain circumstances or very infrequently and feel that it's enough to specifically label it.
You can certainly be gray ace and identify as bi, pan, omni, ply, etc! Any mspec person can definitely be ace and it's cool if you still choose to ID as pan! That being said, I wish you luck on your journey dear Anon! Things like this often take time, and I want you to know that no matter how many times you switch labels or if you ever stop identifying in a certain way, that will never ever invalidate your queer experiences or past experiences with a certain label! :)
Happy very first International Asexuality Day!!! (April 6th, 2021)
According to their website, âIAD is a coordinated worldwide campaign promoting the ace umbrella, including demisexual, grey-asexual and other ace identities.â
The themes are Advocacy, Celebration, Education, and Solidarity (Aces!!)
âThese themes highlight the aims of recognising and enabling the work that the international ace community and organisations do, particularly in non-Western and/or non-English speaking countries. We encourage anyone who identifies under the ace umbrella to participate in IAD, particularly but not exclusively in non-anglophone and/or non-Western countries.â
Full disclosure, Iâm not a non-anglophone or living in a non-western country, but I figured I could help spread to word to other aces who are.
(Interestingly, April 6 is also National Garlic Bread day which...canât be coincidence)
