Also don’t worry about Bear. Lucy has been visiting him for ages now. She’s literally the only person that does. He is a very lonely animal and honestly if you visited you would see his is like the one person in town you will never harm you or anyone else. Like seriously you are more likely to be eaten by a sheep than him.
I promise you just visit him you will have a lovely time and you will make his months maybe even year.
Bear as the only adult Lucy seems to listen to maybe you can talk to her about this Fish Rights movement she’s been obsessed with as of late. Now we both know you can’t talk her out of it but maybe telling her all the reasons this is a complex issue will help her realize that it’s something a kid can’t fix and she can put it on the back burner till she’s older.
Another Ask blog exclusive one shot below the cut :)))
So, this will be the only time Lucy takes Dad’s advice. She’s not sure if it was really that good anyway. It was easily summed up as ‘okay, don’t talk about this with me anymore- ask your friends instead’. Great job Dad. You gave advice without actually giving any.
“So I’m right, right?” Lucy ended, finally finishing her well and practiced argument to Bear making herself right at home in his comfy, pillowy chair. She celebrated her inevitable victory by taking a sip from her apple juice. Bear was nice enough to ask if she wanted tea after she said she would be staying for a little longer than she usually did- to ask him about something. And she didn’t want any tea (she wasn’t sure what the big deal was about leaf water to be honest- but she knew it was a thing adults really liked. A bland drink as bland as they are. She’d drink it for a badge though, but there is no badge for drinking tea). But then he offered apple juice, with a straw too, and she couldn’t refuse that.
She must have shocked him by how thought she was (of course, she’d been refining and had practiced the same spiel again and again and again over the past two months and two weeks and she hasn’t really been counting by the days but her campaign has definitely gone on for a while), because he didn’t respond. His eyes slowly blinked at him, like a gold fish- did goldfish blink? Do fish have eyelids? She’s been drawing them with eyelids on her posters whenever she thought they needed them. And eyebrows too but, she knows fish don’t have eyebrows, it's an’’artistic liberty’ thing. She learned about that in art class.
“Lucy…” Bear eventually sighed out. “I know you mean well, your heart is in the right place, but-”
“Of course! I’m saving lives! I mean, you must think the same, right?” Lucy doesn’t think she’s ever seen Bear eat anything, and, Bear didn’t have a pond in his backyard to fish out of. And she’s never seen any fishing equipment anyway. So, she knows bears eat fish but Bear doesn’t seem like he does. He’s making the choice not to. So clearly he agrees with her and that it’s bad to eat fish-
“While also blinding yourself to how much you might be hurting others.”
Lucy almost spat out her drink.
“How am I hurting people?!” Lucy exclaimed. “I’m not going around killing people, am I???”
“There are other ways to hurt that brute violence,” Bear replied, his voice level but firm. “But yes, I will say, this is far from as detrimental as what your neighbours have been getting up to.”
“Obviously!” Lucy groaned. “How am I the problem if- if Wolf and Fox are-”
“We are not here to discuss them, are we? We are here to discuss about you and your question.”
“Yeah, that-” Lucy perked up, “So what do you think? You agree with me-” Wait, no, he didn’t agree.
“It is a little more complicated than a yes or no.” Must be if he’s taking so long getting to the point.
Bear did not continue straight away. Instead, he set down his paint brush by his easel, and sat down next to her. The couch dipped, but she remained sitting upright just fine.
“It must be difficult, watching those two canines chase your father and his friend around?”
“... I mean, I’ve gotten used to it,” Lucy mumbled. “But I wish I didn’t.”
“I am sorry.”
“If you really are, then why haven’t you done anything about it?” A laugh came out of her then, as the gears in her head started to click. Yeah, because why hasn’t Bear done anything? Wasn’t really much of a secret what’s been going on. “Surely you could just go up to them and scare them or something.” Dad and Terrapin are terrified of Bear, even when there is nothing to fear. Surely, Bear could just give those two a fright too?
“You cannot fight violence with violence, Lucy,” Bear reasoned simply. “And particularly with Fox, as little as I know of him, he is quite difficult to reason with.”
Lucy took another sip of her apple juice, caught between wanting to hurl, swallow it, or just go back on her decision and keep the juice in the cup.
“Pardon me, we got side-tracked.” Bear mused, glancing at her. “To answer your question, I urge you to expand your worldview.”
“Dad already told me to do that,” Lucy muttered, “By talking to Terrapin and Mrs Otter.” And you, but, that was her suggestion really. Dad still hasn’t gone back around to scolding her about it yet. Maybe he’s forgotten about it. That would be for the better. She didn’t want to have to explain for the millionth time that Bear isn’t a ‘blood thirsty predator’.
“Then allow me to offer my own take on your situation.”
Her ear twitched as her confidant cleared his throat.
“Lucy, as a herbivore, you have the privilege to be able to eat whatever you can digest, and have it be socially acceptable to eat the entirety of your possible diet. It is evident in the way you talk that you have not considered what it is like to have a restricted diet.”Bear breathed in, centering himself, before continuing. “I know you are trying to understand the lives of those who live underwater, and I am not saying your concern is misplaced, nor am I telling you that the behaviours of certain predators in this neighbourhood are justified, but you should consider the lives of those in front of you as much as your own.
That was similar to what Dad had told her, but different. She liked Bear’s explanation better though.
“So,” she huffed out, “what do you think then?” Once again her ears twitched, this time from Bear’s chuckles.
“I think the way mother earth designed this world is incredibly flawed. But personally, I have no qualms with consuming aquatic life.”
“Why? They’re life.”
“And where would you draw that line? The vegetables you eat come from plants that are alive, and the cells that make them up are still active when you consume them. If they were not, then your vegetables would not be green anymore.”
She opened her mouth to speak, to rebuttal, only to realise there was a gaping hole in her argument. To cover up the loss, she snapped her mouth shut. But of course, Bear noticed. He’d turned to look at some point, his gaze looking down at her.
“Do you see how narrow your worldview is?”
“Okay-” she tried to dismiss it as much as possible. “But, answer the question.”
“I have no qualms with eating fish because I don’t see them like how I see you. I cannot talk to fish, I cannot understand fish, nor can I give fish apple juice to drink instead of tea, because they would drink neither. You are a person, Lucy. Fish are not. And so I am indifferent to them being served on a plate. Just like how you do not see plants as people, and have no qualms with that either.”
“But you have to agree, fish are more alive than plants!”
“Are they?”
“Well…”
She mulled over it for a moment, her lips close to the apple juice once again. When the moment was over, she decided to drink it. Just to bide her some more time to say something but… well, Bear beat her to it.
“What counts as ‘more alive’ to you?”
“Being able to think,” Lucy reasoned.
“Perhaps not in the way we do, but plants can think. They process their environment, and they react to it to survive.”
“Okay but- it’s not like they can talk, can they?”
“Fish cannot talk. You can. I can too.”
“Okay but-” Lucy scratched her head, “uhhhh- they’re more alive if…” she squinted, thought, and she thought, and she thought, and- and… erm… uh…
“This world is very nuanced, isn’t it?”
“I don’t like this,” Lucy finally spat out.
“Don’t like what? Being challenged?”
“Yeah.”
It was then Lucy finally decided to just drown the rest of the apple juice. She chugged it down, gulping it, letting the golden liquid run down her throat before splashing down into the pit in her stomach.
“Well, if you are to continue questioning the morality and ethics of the food we eat, then be prepared to be challenged even more.”
“Why can’t it be more simple?” Lucy wailed. “Why can’t it be like- we only eat things that aren’t alive-”
“That is not possible. We all eat living things in order to survive. Have you learned about the food chai-”
“YES!” She groaned, falling back, clutching the empty cup. She kicked her feet, grumbling, holding herself back from a hissy fit but from the look on Bear’s face this probably still qualified as one. Ugh. “I know all about the food chain!”
Small thing get eaten by big thing and then big thing get eaten by even bigger thing and then big thing dies and then really small things eat the big thing. Or something dumb like that. And then before Mrs Otter could go on about how new laws and the new era of society disrupted the food chain and how animals found ways to adapt, the school bell rang, and Lucy could finally escape from biology.
“Alright.” Bear turned away again, a soft smile on his face. Really? What was there to even be happy about? Maybe he’s just glad he won the argument. “Have I answered your question?”
Lucy stopped kicking her feet.
“... I think so.”
“Good.” And he stood up from his seat, and gently took her empty cup away from her. “Would you like some more juice?”
“Yes please. It’s great.”
“Sweet isn’t it? Fresh from the garden. I will pour you some more. Very nice apples were sacrifice for this drink-”
“UGHH- Don’t say it like that!”
Bear only laughed, and headed into the kitchen.
Okay. One person down. Only Terrapin and Mrs Otter to go. Neither of them would agree with her, she’s sure. But maybe she’ll have an easier time listening to them, since this’ll be the second time she’s been told to keep an open mind.

Ka-boom, here's some ship art between Craig and Konrad by L! If I didn't kill him off so early, this would've been a reality. If I ever rewrite TCG, I'm replacing Baaf with Craig, the Scottish Highlander. Who knows, maybe I'll even do some oneshots on him if he did survive, alternate scenario stuff. Thank you L for the peak KonCraig stuff and for feeding into me possibly doing a rewrite someday <33333.
ok so what if it’s like Fox just had an episode and then wolf comes in (maybe Fox was in the bedroom and he couldn’t stop seeing his mom and she started saying some really bad stuff, and it caused him to have another episode) and now wolf is comforting him pretty please make this reality
(Second picture under line, possible tw for disturbing imagery)
