Still researching classic Rogue Trader dreadnoughts, since I thought it was a good idea to buy 4 more of them. White Dwarf 100 (April 1988) has a long article, "Chapter Approved: Dreadnoughts," with this color spread of Eldar, Imperial, and Ork dreadnought armour. Note the middle row shows Imperial mech suits used by rogue traders, the Imperial Army (later known as the Imperial Guard), and the Legiones Astartes. At this time most suits were just another equipment type that could be issued to any unit and worn by normal soldiers, though the text now describes some Imperial pilots being surgically implanted in their suits.
Army and marines often were depicted side by side.
We see the beginnings of formally differentiating models. You can still mix and match weapon arms like you could from the start, but now there are 3 official named variants: the Deredo (Eddy) has 1 bolt gun and 1 missile launcher, the Furibundus (Fury) has 2 bolt guns and 1 lascannon, and the Contemptor (Chuck) has 4 bolt guns with pairs on both arms.
Y'know, I usually will roll with just about any grimdark shit that comes my way in the 40k franchise, it kinda comes with the territory. But there is one point that I refuse to give ground on:
Dreadnaughts are happy boys. They are smoothly integrated into their coffins, they aren't in constant agonizing pain and body dysmorphia. Sure, their minds are kinda foggy, but that's because they are seniors, their age is getting to them. That's why they get to spend most of their time napping and relaxing, unlike most Astartes. But when the time comes to slay the enemies of the Emperor, their wonderful cybernetic bodies are great for getting the job done! Boxbots are happy bots! You are not allowed to critique this headcanon because it is perfect and wonderful, gosh I love boxbots so much they are so chonky and friendshaped

Love me some mechs that are just as bad for the environment as they are for the enemy 🦾🤖
Just a whole buncha’ dreadnoughts!
