DPPH antioxidantes
Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruit is widely consumed as fresh fruit and juice. In this experimental and laboratory study, antioxidant properties of pomegranate juice and peel extrac of three variety were evaluate. Their antioxidant properties by different method were measured. Results are expressed as mean±SD. The statistical examination of the data was performed using the SPSS version 11.5 program. Mean values of antioxidant activity in different cultivars were compared by using analysis of the variance (ANOVA) test. When significant (p
Lemon (Citrus limon) is a small fruit-bearing tree from the Rutaceae family. This study compared the phytochemical composition, the total phenolics (an antioxidant group of substances), and the antioxidant activity measured as free radical scavenging activity of the juices of three lemon varieties from Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. The phytochemical screening was conducted by applying qualitative tests for carbohydrates, reducing sugars, glycosides, steroids, saponins, phenols and tannins, flavonoids, anthraquinones, alkaloids, and proteins. Then, the Folin-Ciocalteu test assessed the total phenolics content of the samples. Moreover, the percent scavenging effect via the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity determined its antioxidant activity. Finally, the Pearson correlation test examined the statistical correlation between total phenolics content and antioxidant activity. The lemon juice samples contain many bioactive compounds, including reducing sugars, glycosides, steroids, saponins, phenols and tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and proteins. All three juices exhibited high and significantly different total phenolics contents ranging from 460.57 – 686.18 mg/L. The juices also showed high antioxidant activities against free radicals which varied significantly from 89.84 – 92.80 % scavenging effect. The correlation between these two sets of data—total phenolics and free radical scavenging—indicates the very big contribution of the phenolic compounds to the antioxidant activity.

Medicinal plants have been using for treatment of different diseases since ages. Ficus carica is a plant which is abundantly present and easily available in Pakistan. In this study methanolic extracts of Ficus carica stem bark was examined for anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant potential. Anti-bacterial and anti-fungal potential was examined following disc diffusion method whereas anti-oxidant activity was determined using DPPH scavenging method. The maximum antibacterial activity was recorded 19 mm against Klebsiella pneumonae and Escherichia coli, and the highest anti-fungal potential was also recorded 19 mm against Fusarium oxysporum and Mucor racemosus each. The mean anti-oxidant activity was also recorded 63.45% in comparison to DPPH. The plant extracts was exhibited appropriate anti-oxidant potential and antimicrobial activity against various human pathogenic bacterial and fungal strains.
Kyllinga nemoralis has been used in traditional folk medicine. Despite ethnobotanical reports, there are only limited studies on its antioxidant properties. This study determined the antioxidant properties of the ethanolic (KnE), ethyl acetate (KnEA) and petroleum ether (KnP) extracts of K. nemoralis using total antioxidant capacity (TAC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and reducing power assays. Results showed that the antioxidative property of K. nemoralis extracts is extraction solvent-dependent. The TAC of KnP (94.60 mg AAE/g) and KnEA (72.08 mg AAE/g) were significantly higher than KnE (70.25 mg AAE/g). However, the EC50 (effective concentration) of KnE (15.02 mg/L; 112.43 mg/L) and KnEA (62.19 mg/L; 123.13 mg/L) indicates stronger DPPH free radical scavenging activity and reducing power than KnP (765.32 mg/L; 514.85 mg/L). Thus, K. nemoralis is a potential source of natural antioxidant compounds. Moreover, ethanol and ethyl acetate are recommended as a relatively good solvent for the extraction of antioxidant compounds from K. nemoralis.
Syzygium cumini (L.) is a common plant and known for various medicinal properties. The study was conducted to investigate the phytochemical profiling, antioxidant and anticancer activity from the seeds of Syzygium cumini. Ethanol was prepared from seed of Syzygium cumini used for phytochemical analysis. The qualitative phytochemical screening of the ethanolic extract revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, saponins, phenols and carbohydrates. The quantitative analysis proved the presence of total flavonoids, phenols analysed by standard methods. The present findings clearly demonstrated that Syzygium cumini was an effective antioxidant in various studies like vitamin C, vitamin E and in vitro antioxidant assays including DPPH, reducing rower assay and performed by standard protocols. The anticancer activity can be detected by using colon cancer (cell line HP 29). It can be done in ethanol extract of Syzygium cumini plant seeds. Therefore, the study indicates that the Syzygium cumini ethanolic extract has higher antioxidant and anticancer activity.
