Do you think Hopper was using again in season three? I noticed when he was talking to Joyce in the first episode THREE TIMES he was moved to stand under a "prescriptions" sign. Two different signs and a totally new set! But if he was back on the pills, why do you think the show wouldn't show us that? They did in season one? I'm confused
I think it was the opposite . His behavior change is because he quit the p*lls (why he has changes in behavior specifically in s3). The mayor says to Hopper " Those p*lls you used to swallow like candy. I can't recall you having a prescr*ption?"
The pilot pitch for s1 said Hopper "ab*sed tu*nal a potent barb*tuate" (that was later banned in the 90s). This was because Tu*nal promoted a high physical and psychological dep*ndency and carried a high risk for overd*se. Tu*nal saw widespread ab*se as a recreat*onal dr*g from the 1960s through the 1980s.Barb*turates like Tu*nal enhance GABA’s effects, helping the person taking the dr*g to achieve a calmed and sedated state. Withdrawl symptoms of b*rbituates are similar to Hopper's s3 behavior- increased anxiety, aggression, and changes in behavior.
Also would explain the weight gain/comfort eating as a replacement of sorts.
This town though... yikes. Hopper mentions the mayor does c*ke. Hopper the chief of police-used to ill*gally buy dr*gs. Nancy suspected the head of ‘Hawkins news’ did dr*gs too . We also see robin & Steve pricked by a needle/ forced to get h*gh by the Russians. Will &Billy in s2 were also pierced with a needle-but passed out instead. In s1, becky mentions how Brenner would get Terry h*gh and throw her in the water tank. And in s3: the stolen fertilizer from farms/the flayed eating ammonia and fertilizer/sweating profusely are a lose ref to m*th. Sounds crazy i know-but read the entirety of this post and you'll see what i'm talking about.
*also weird trivia ...i guess: tul*nol was typically sold under the street name "rainbows". (cough DID theory, rainbow ship/rainbow room). And the duffers love stephen king-and a main character in 'pet cemetary' ab*sed tu*nal too.Tu*nal had a weird impact on media ; characters in films like Taxi Driver and in novels like Fight Club reference the dr*g, and even James Bond (on the st movie list)took a caps*le or two.
Update:
Oh! I agree about the Joyce thing. I mean look at the scene set up! Hopper says "feelings ... this isn't going to work. This isn't going to work". ( and then it shows Joyce next to that pr*scriptions sign)
Also later when he asks Joyce out -we see Hopper behind a ‘radio shack’ sign. Aka where Bob used to work.
We see Joyce next to the pr*scription sign because - Hopper’s mind is preoccupied over pr*scriptions and is using Joyce as an emotional crutch/replacement for it. Joyce’s still has Bob on her mind -and is using Hopper as a replacement for him (why Hopper is next to the radio shack sign). And when Hopper asked her out Joyce watches cheers (Ep “rescue me”) and jopper is compared to Dianne and fraiser. Diane says as joyce is listening to the tv “He (fraiser) had a couple of sips of Chianti tonight and asked me to marry him.” At dinner Hopper orders a chianti while being stood up by Joyce. And Dianne and Frasier don’t marry and are also not endgame, cause she ditches him at the alter. The other ep of cheers she watches in s3 was with Bob , and was called “ the rebound part 2″ in reference to Dianne first getting with Fraiser (aka Hopper). He’s just a rebound to Bob-why she’s thinking of Bob after Hopper asked her out. Heck, after hopper asks her out ‘she’s got you’ by patsy cline plays - it’s about a highschool ex singing about how their ex is in love with someone else (her still being hung up on Bob).
