I had this is the tags yesterday, but I keep thinking about it: the Denalis have gone through so much grief and upheaval throughout the Saga. The sisters were already hurting with the ever-fresh grief for Sasha. There was the combined joy/awkwardness of Laurent semi-joining the coven and making Irina so happy, but not really committing to diet and having other loyalties. Before you know it he's dead and Irina is deeper in grief than ever before. Then they fall out with the Cullens, their only "family." Then Irina is humiliated and executed in front of half the vampire world. There's the hopeful joy of Garrett joining and Kate's happiness with him, but again, he's a wanderer and not sold on the diet, so will Kate even stay? And now Eleazar is in Big Trouble with the Volturi for siding against them AND for telling everyone about Chelsea's gift, which (at least in my HC) is absolutely forbidden. It's entirely possible that his name is high on Caius's hit list now. Carlisle may need a nap, but this coven has been through so much and their future is so uncertain.
