This climber Rosa 'Korbin' (rose Iceberg) was purchased in a packet as a bare root plant from a market stall 12 years ago. It has used larger shrubs for support and developed a considerable stem. The pruning of the old flower heads results in three sessions of blooms a year. This reliable cultivar has glossy, green foliage and clusters of fragrant, double white flowers.

One of the photos that stood out to me, when I was searching my archives for inspiration for my own garden lately, is this one. It shows part of an artist garden that we visited many years ago in England. I love this garden scene so much! The old shed with the wonky roof conquered by a climbing rose delivers the perfect background. The chartreuse color of the tree to the left is picked up by medium sized shrubs in the middle ground and by the flowers of the Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) in the foreground. The purple pink foxgloves adds height and interesting vertical lines to the middle ground. And the white flower clay sculpture mounted to a rusty board like iron structure is the perfect eye catcher! The climbing Rosa 'Korizont' (rose, ‘Summer Wine’) is covered in late summer blooms. These single flowers with wavy, coral-pink petals and prominent red stamens are highly fragrant. In the autumn flowers will be followed by attractive rose-hips.

In this street in Cambridge, UK, the vigorous, upright climber Rosa ‘Graham Thomas’ (Rosa ‘Ausmas’, modern shrub rose, English rose) was flowering. The light tea fragrance can be appreciated by residences and passers by. The rose repeat flowers and the owner said there are three floral displays a year. This cultivar was bred by David Austin and released in 1983.

Putting on a display at the start of summer Rosa 'Climbing Iceberg' (rose, climbing floribunda) and white flowered Paeonia lactiflora 'White Wings' (peony). The floribunda rose will repeat flower up until December, whilst the peony flowers only once but the foliage has wonderful autumn colour. Both these plants were purchased from a market stall many years ago and always mark the start of summer for me.

On this rope swag Clematis 'Purpurea Plena Elegans' was growing with Rosa 'Maigold' (climbing rose). In early summer the thorny-stemmed climbing rose was covered with fragrant, semi-double, coppery-yellow while the Clematis was putting on stem growth. Now in late summer the Clematis is flowering with the repeat blooms of the rose. The Clematis is in Pruning Group 3 and so can have stems cut back to 30cm above ground in February or March.
