The new foliage of Sorbaria sorbifolia 'Sem' (false spirea) is a distinctive yellow-green flushed with bright reddish-pink and bronze with the leaves becoming greener in summer. This cultivar is a more compact form of this thicket-forming shrub composed of upright stems. This plant can be invasive and needs to be managed.

Even in spring the previous seasonβs stems of Salvia 'Blue Spire' (perovskia, Russian sage) still provide interest. This small, upright deciduous sub-shrub has white stems which have aromatic grey-green leaves. There are spikes of small, violet-blue flowers in late summer and autumn. It will thrive on a dry, chalky soil and with salt-laden air.

There are many Magnolia Γ soulangeana (saucer magnolia, Chinese magnolia) cultivars, this one had a stronger pink colouration. This spreading deciduous tree or large shrub produces flowers in early spring before the new foliage emerges.
