Its the first day of Pride month and I want to remind my LGBT+ fam that Pride is often not accessible and excludes our disabled LGBT+ siblings ♿🏳️‍🌈⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ What if you were no longer allowed entry into your favorite gay bar, or safe space/shelter, or queer coffee shop, or queer concert, gallery, show?⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ These spaces are denied to disabled LGBT+ people all the time due to inaccessibility and ableism. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Whether it's a step at the entrance, a staircase and no elevator, no sign language interpreters, no sensory-friendly spaces, no allergy-friendly food options, or a bouncer not allowing someone with a service dog inside because they ask for documentation that doesn't exist (yes, really happened), this ignorance and discrimination is unacceptable.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ It starts with hiring us as organizers, it starts with integrating us into the spaces where we belonged all along. It takes the work to unlearn ableism and misconceptions about disability, it takes effort and care to make our spaces accessible. These monsters and orphans manifest in UC-SD through the lack and incompentent resources for disabled students, workers, and staff. In my experience as a disabled student, UC-SD can be incredibly inaccessible and uncaring. Going through the instituted resources such as the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), several messages have been repeated to me. One example is that I must show authorized proof or else they do not believe me or my disabilities. Another example is that they know more about my disabilities than I do and so they know what's best for me. These narratives I have found to be traumatizing and dehumanizing in how I am viewed as a disabled person. There are too many times to count where I felt like all of my problems were my fault. Where it was me who did not deserve help and that these structures in place were the best thing that could have ever happened to me. I now know that this is the trap of capitalism and neoliberalism. By focusing on the individual, it is so easy to erase the structural issues that are actually the root of our oppression and hurt. And it is also easy to see how the well being of students, workers, and staff of the university are not prioritized.

I've been spending my spoons trying to live within the systems that sustain me. #DisabilityJustice asks us to destroy the systems that bind us, but recognizes we may still need to work with oppressive structures to survive. I have spent the past two months trying to hold disability and education systems to their own oppressive policies. I do not have it in me to ask for more: to ask that policies be changed, to march/roll in the streets with my fellow humans and demand dignity. I am just trying to survive the dehumanization of being disabled and poor. If #DisabilityJusticeIsLove and if #AccessIsLove then these systems are created and enforced with hatred.
