I can’t put my finger on why exactly, but something about the Ring of Barahir really bothers me. In the 3rd Age Arvedui gives the RoB to the Lossoth as a sign of his gratitude to them for taking him in during the harsh winter, and it’s later recovered by way of ransoming it back.

It’s like...

It was given by Finrod as thanks for saving his life, and kept by the descendants of Barahir who saved him even after Beren “cashed in” on the favour during the Quest.

But when Beren’s descendant gives the RoB in gratitude, it’s ransomed back instead?

I don’t like it, doesn’t seem right.

1. Female characters, obvs

2. I would’ve liked a bit more of Bilbo’s inner thought process? I know we get some, but I just felt a bit more removed from him than I do from many protagonists, I would’ve liked to hear his reasoning and how he gradually grew/changed from “NO THANK YOU IT’S TEA TIME” to “RIGHT THAT’S IT I HAVE SAVED YOUR ASS 50 TIMES THORIN THIS ARKENSTONE IS MY DAMN FEE”

3. Riddles in the Dark should be three times as long it was amazing

4. More dialogue and characterisation of all the dwarves

5. ...haha before the movies I absolutely would’ve said “Legolas cameo in the Mirkwood scenes!!” but now I’m scared that he wouldn’t go away again so actually I’m fine

Numenorean Steel Bows

Had another “Eöl’s dart was a plumbata” big-brain moment and I think the legendary numenorean steel bows were crossbows. Maximum hitting-power, punches through armour like nobody’s business, and bigger + stronger numenoreans could obviously use some genuinely terrifying crossbows, even compared to the monsters used in the late-medieval and early renaissance eras before early firearms replaced them. The ease of using a crossbow also means it makes sense for their armies to be feared for using them, since it’d be easy to train sailors and basic troops to moderate competency then having them shoot 1-2 times before the battle proper starts.
