The Empire Magazine feature article in their September issue on The Rings of Power Season 3 teased a flashback scene regarding Elrond's twin brother Elros (also played by Robert Aramayo). This gives us an excellent opportunity to explore the character a bit here on Women of Númenor. 

As seen in S1E3 of The Rings of Power, the image above depicts a tapestry in the Halls of Lore on the island of Númenor. It depicts Elrond and his twin brother Elros, and the story of their separation as each makes the Choice of the Peredhel.

But what does that mean?

The twins were the children of Eärendil and Elwing, themselves descended from mixed ancestry. After the great deeds of their parents, and the final codes of the War of Wrath that closed the First Age, the Valar – the governing powers of Arda – gave the family a choice. Would they choose the fate and end of Elves, or Humans? They had the capacity of both, due to their blood.

Eärendil and Elwing, after their fated journey to Aman (which resulted in the Valar launching the war that aided Middle-earth and overthrew Morgoth), chose the fate of the Elves. Their son Elrond,  back in Middle-earth, chose the same.

Elros, though, wished to be counted amongst the Secondborn, the Younger Children of Ilúvatar: humans. His wish granted, he became the first king of Númenor He led his people (the Edain, the remnants of the three main tribes of Men) to the island of Elenna, Land of the Star.

He lived a long life of 500 years, and saw Númenor thrive and flourish. There is no reason to believe the twins never saw each other again, as Elves often visited Númenor in the early days. 

Still, the scene of the tapestry above marked a parting of sorts, as it meant they would not share the same fate. As Men depart after death to a place no Elf goes, it must have been a bittersweet farewell indeed.

Almost a year later, I resurface with a new chapter of Andúnië. Thank you to those of you who are still here!

The events of the last decades of Númenor, narrated by Telumendis, the sister of Elendil of Andúnië. In her memoir, she recounts the efforts of the Faithful to save their homeland, her marriage to the Enemy, and the fates of their two sons.

I’m going to tell you about my charity project. It all started as a joke in response to a post on Blue Sky. The idea quickly took shape for a group of artists to come together and create a Númenor-themed pin-up calendar. Several artists joined forces to create this calendar. All money will be donated to Mary’s Meals*. Each month will feature a character from Númenor. I had the great honor of drawing Anarion.

The creative process: I thought of one of my fanfics called Kinky Sun. Anarion, completely naked on his throne with his sword and helmet. I was then able to easily find reference poses. The rules didn’t allow for full nudity, so I thought about clothing—especially drawing inspiration from ancient Egypt. At first, I wanted to draw a throne, but I was putting too much pressure on myself because the perspective wasn’t right. So I decided to reproduce the reference image instead. It took four months of hard work and pushing myself to the limit to complete this drawing—I’m so proud!

I wrote this as a one shot awhile back, rewritten into a 3 chapter fic, will post remaing 2 chapters by over the next few days. Hope you enjoy.

More glimpses of Númenor in Season 3 of The Rings of Power are coming out, and we’re here to take a closer look! 

Chiefly, Empire Magazine released an image of Elendil and another of Ar-Pharazôn, and the contrast between them is striking. 

Ar-Pharazôn is riding on a lavish golden chariot, seemingly through busy city streets. The crowds stand under detailed and grand architecture. The king’s arms are raised to the side in a proud gesture, his expression also proud as he gazes forward to the crowds ahead. We can imagine those crowds cheering his name. His garb is ornate and vibrantly-hued: reds and golds in his cape and finely embroidered top. The imagery is reminiscent of Roman triumphal attire and ceremonial chariots. He is indeed “Ar-Pharazôn the Golden”. 

Elendil, on the other hand, kneels on rough rocks before the sea (likely Andunië, on Númenor’s Western Coast, we’re thinking) – fully alone, only with the natural world to witness. He appears to be holding Narsil. His hair is long and his garb humble: earth-toned, travel-worn, and unadorned. Looking closely at his gaze, it seems that he is looking upwards – submitting to forces more powerful than himself, perhaps seeking their wisdom through present trials and those ahead of him. 

It’s a picture of pride versus humility, of power from other humans versus forces older and more constant. The contrast even underscores these two men as, from a certain lens, foil characters. It will be fascinating to see to what extent (if at all) The Rings of Power juxtaposes these characters in such a way, and how they might do so.
