reminder for all hockey fans:
netflix is making a hockey show called "the sticks" that is based on a very real tragedy that occured in canada in 2018.
the show follows a minnesota high school team after their bus crashes and coming back to hockey afterwards.
in 2018, the humboldt broncos' (a junior A team made up of 18-22 year olds) bus was hit by a tractor trailer on a highway intersection. 16 people (10 players, 2 coaches, and 4 team staff members) were killed, along with 13 other players severely injured.
the memory of the humboldt broncos crash is an incredibly sensitive subject carrying a lot of trauma to both the survivors, their families, and deceased's families. the trajectory of hockey in canada was changed significantly after this tragedy.
despite this, netflix has decided to make a show using the death of young hockey players for profit. they did not consult the survivors, nor the deceased's families. they stole a canadian story for a feel-good cash grab.
i understand wanting to watch shows about hockey, but this is not the show to watch. do not give it attention, as the humboldt broncos' memories deserve to be theirs and theirs alone to share.
This is how Netflix advertises the show btwβ¦ Theyβre calling it βyour new hockey obsessionβ. Itβs disgusting.
One of the kids on the Broncos lived on my block. A coworker lost her brother in law. This tragedy was widely felt in Canada as a whole - flags at half-mast level.
None of the families even knew about this show until the media started asking how they felt.
It is taking a tragedy and turning it into a cash cow.
This was such a deeply-felt issue that even the truck driver pleaded guilty and has tried to make amends. (And as he is facing deportation after his sentence, some of the families have even started supporting him being allowed to stay in the country.) There is a real story you could be telling about community and resilience that is not just turning one of the worst days for THE NATION into cheap thrills and sensationalism.
Don't watch. Don't tweet. Pretend this show does not exist.

I needed a hand reference for a project, so I started sifting through the stock photo library I have a subscription.
They are supposed to tag images generated from AI, and you can turn off the tag if you don't want that. I always keep that setting off, since I don't want that bullshit.
This is an image that was NOT in the AI category.
It is like... first, we can't use it at all since the hands are all on the same layer and connected. Hand on the left is front and back at the same time. Second hand is one finger short. third hand is all kinds of wrong sized fingers.
Fourth hand? WTF. It is scary nonsense.
How on earth do they get away with this not being tagged with AI?
BOOOOOO.

When I say βDialectical thinking will save your sanity and your soul,β I am not even a little bit joking.
This is also something I think a lot about when people claim that logic dictates two seemingly opposing ideas cannot BOTH be valid or true. (Setting aside that most people who want to argue logic have never actually studied any logic theory, and they mean something else entirely.)
And thatβs just not the only kind of logic that exists! Dialectical thought/logic is, in fact, very old! Although admittedly the ancient Greeks often used dialectic logic to uncover a contradiction (famously seen in the Socratic method) and to refute something.
Your good olβ thesis, antithesis, synthesis.
A lot of classic western thinking and western logic - the stuff you get from Greece and Athens - is what gives us the black-and-white, one-or-the-other conclusions and arguments. It takes dialectic and still concludes one thing over the other was disproven.
But we also have examples of ancient/late antique world dialectic thought that says multiple things can be true (or logically valid) at once. That people can have different experiences or understandings of something, and both can be legitimate.
β¦itβs the Jewish Talmud.
Image: The Rabbiβs Cat graphic novel panel. The titular cat drinks from a red ceramic bowl of water placed upon the Rabbiβs desk. Speech bubble says βslurp slurp,β for the cat. The rabbi sits behind the cat, explaining: βWestern thought works by thesis, antithesis, synthesis. While Judaism goes thesis, antithesis, antithesis, antithesisβ¦β
seriously! Talmudic thought and logic is often largely dialectical. I think unfortunately (and in part due to antisemitism) people see βTalmudic logic,β as legalistic, full of βloopholes,β or cold and needlessly complex. Even if you donβt use the word Talmudic, thereβs a lot of dialectic thought that people reject for similar reasons as those. Similarly, I notice an unfortunate amount of people who decry when things βarenβt logical!β Because they conflict, or who insist they only believe in objective facts and truths, and the scientific methodβ’. And people who, in arguments, say things like βfacts donβt care about your feelings!β And βyouβre being overly emotional here.β
But like this post illustrates, any kind of dialectical thought can be other adjectives too β compromising, nuanced, representing a diversity of experience and opinion. It can be organic, community centered thinking. It does the hard work of building together, rather than combatting apart.
On the Logician website, Avi Sion writes:
On the positive side, we may mention especially two processes, which were more developed in Rabbinic logic than elsewhere, namelyΒ a-fortioriΒ argument andΒ reconciliation of conflicting theses. With regard to these (the first and thirteenthΒ MidotΒ of R. Ishmael), there is no doubt that the Rabbis were in advance of their time for centuries, both in the quantity of their practise and in the quality of their theoretical awareness. However, though these processes are demonstrably valid, it does not follow that their use by Rabbis was invariably faultless, nor that their understanding of them was complete.
It must be stressed that Aristotelean logic did not take into accountΒ degreesΒ of possession of qualities (as doesΒ a-fortioriΒ argument), nor the βbalancing of oppositesβ aspect of logic (as does harmonization of conflicting theses). The species of a genus might have a hierarchical relation to it, but this was not brought out in the syllogism (which merely confirmed the common ground between the terms); and when two arguments arrived at opposite conclusions, there was no conscious attempt to reconcile them (the reasoning process stopped or became unconscious as of the discovery of conflict, with the thought that βone thesis or the other or both must be wrongβ).
Greeks evidently functioned in a more βeither-orβ (or βall or nothingβ) mode than the Jews, who rather sought to find the nuances between predicates and the commonalties of disparate views. In Rabbinical debates, this attitude served to maintain the credibility and authority of all participants.
Now this is by no means perfect in all cases, all the time. And the use of such logical forms doesnβt make everyone using them more correct.
but consider that last sentence again: βthis attitude served to maintain the credibility and authority of all participants.β Think about all the ways that can be used in life, especially if you swap out βauthority,β with βhuman dignity,β (the rabbis were very concerned with human dignity and avoiding humiliation of other people.) Other cultures might also refer to similar concepts like: βdisagreeing without losing face.β
And not every seemingly conflicting idea, reality, or experience even has to be an argument or a battlegrounds to prove one thing and disprove another!
Just the simple fact of something like: βI donβt experience that thing that you do/the way that you do. My experience is totally different. Both of our experiences are true and real.β Does wonders.
thereβs also not always an internal argument or disagreement when I state two experiences that some people may believe conflict are actually both true or valid. One truth doesnβt have to falsify another in order to be a real βtruth.β
Letting that be okay helps you see more diversity and nuance in the world.
SOMETIMES dialectical thought starts with two different views and then reconciles them to show they are not actually in contrast, or disproves one or the other. But also SOMETIMES dialectical thought acknowledges both starting points remain legitimate or valid, or it gives you a new, third view to consider.

Mice in your home now get their own doors
A door is one of the things that makes a building unlike any other structure. All the doors in buildings are intended for human use, no matter which species actually enter and exit. We want to keep encouraging cross-species interactions, and give the smallest members of our communities the recognition they deserve.
Soon, you'll be able to see, smell, and hear the mice in your home, and they will be able to see, smell, and hear you in return. Each mouse will have its own door, instead of one large door intended to accommodate all visitors. And yes, you'll be able to welcome multiple mice through a single door.
If a door falls into disuse due to illness, injury, or death, another mouse will be placed into your home. You won't lose mice just because they die.
Past mice will stay in your home-- including corpses. Removing all of those would be... a lot.
This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out - stay tuned!
It's very clear that you all have strong feelings about your homes and about this change. We hear you. The passion people have for their homes is one of the things that makes them special.
As this rolls out over the next few days and you explore it, we'll keep infesting your homes with new mice, so please stay in your homes, and do not leave.
Your presence has always been our favorite part of your home, whether you're a person or a mouse, and nothing about this change is meant to limit that.
If you'd like to discuss this change, leave a note in one of the mouse holes and we'll follow up with as many of you as we can. We want to work with you to put more mice in your home.

nothing will ever be funnier to me than the 30-50 feral hogs joke phase, I think about it at least once a week
Happy 30-50 feral hogs day
World heritage post
This post is funny in retrospect because feral hogs are basically the only legitimate reason to own an assault rifle. It is the one and only real problem faced by anyone in the US that can be solved with a semi-automatic weapon that has more muzzle energy than a handgun. Itβs just easy to ridicule because it sounds silly to the people who donβt live in areas with wild hogs (most of the country).
Not recommending this to the film crowd but it struck me a lot of people don't understand how important the movie "liquid sky" was to music/fashion/club culture. It was the highest grossing independent film of 1983 and I think it's largely forgotten now by most people but my local theater used to show it with Blade Runner, like it had that status in some cities
