Play Pretend

my SO and i have a projector. our cool neighbors have a vast dvd collection. fundamentally these are toys. we have those neighbors over for movie nights. Play Toys. more broadly shared hobbies fall into this category but it's extra fun if there's Equipment to admire and share.

ttrpgs are obvious but invaluable examples of Play Pretend. HOWEVER your options are not limited to this. i started a local writing group and this is also Play Pretend bc we all talk about our stories together. there are many such creative endeavors in this world.

having someone over for a meal is Snack Time. if you make a lil thing of it and eat at the table and make it nice with dessert and a fancy beverage to share it feels very grown up. and you will feel impressed with yourself for it. but it scratches the same itch as trading fruit snacks and suchlike.

of course these can be mixed and matched. most activities are enhanced by Snack Time if your friend targets enjoy breaking bread together.

and one begets the other. if you Play Pretend with someone for long enough they may eventually tell you about Toys they have and if you want to play too they'll probably let you. if they're nice.

The term “zombie” is both a technical term, referring to a family, and a common name, referring to a genus.

The family Zombie is a broad, overarching group that includes the genus that many people call zombie (Ghoulus, not to be confused with Ghouli, the unrelated genus of the Ghala family which also includes bogeymen and some ghosts*) as well as the Mummy genus (Pyrima), the spore-zombie genus (Fungan) and a few others.

The colloquial term “Zombie” is the common term for the genus Ghoulus, which is in the family Zombie and includes Ghoulus romero (the walking zombie), Ghoulus snydera (the running zombie), and Ghoulus smithi (the vampiric zombie, also called the legendary zombie).

Interestingly, there are several things called “zombies” that are neither Ghoulus nor Zombie, including the dancing zombie (Jacksoni thrillera), which is more closely related to (although not currently actually in the same family as) clowns.

*Note: the ghosts in the Ghala family are not true ghosts. True ghosts are in the order Spectere, which is entirely unrelated to Ghouli, Ghoulus, Pyrima, and Fungan. Ghala “ghosts” are given the common name ghost because of their superficial similarity to true ghosts.

the closest to a domesticated ghost we have is the house ghost, Phantome domus (sometimes classified as a distinct subspecies Phantome domus domesticus).

P. domus is interesting because it’s like housecats – they are technically domesticated (scans have shown that the fight-or-flight response, like in domesticated animals, is weaker in P. domus than in related species like P. majestica, the manor ghost, or P. more, the cemetary ghost), but evidence suggests that it’s a naturalistic co-evolution rather than an intentional domestication process like with sheep or dogs.

I am not saying that Goose should be above criticism or that I don't completely understand why so many POC fans were angry over the whole controversy. There's absolutely a discussion to be had about how normalised racism is in many fandoms and indie communities. However, I find it suspicious that people only started digging up old tweets and posts of hers since the finale was announced to be heading to theatres. Even though it's clear that Goose and the rest of the cast have grown out of this behaviour and have taken accountability for their actions. It's completely fine not to accept her apology, but that does not make it ok to harass her and be hateful back. Also, I've looked for any tweets of Goose saying something even remotely misogynistic, like many claim and have found no proof of her saying such. People are literally going, "just trust me, bro"

I've also seen people trying to use Jax as a way to say that Goose is just as bad as her because she has said that Jax is her self-insert. Regardless of how you feel about Jax and how her story was handled, you do realise that the whole point of Jax being Goose's self-insert is to explore what could've happened to Goose if she hadn't opened up and grown as a person. Using edgy humour to push others away so they don't get hurt. This isn't even the first time a character has been a self-insert for its creator. But the MOMENT the creator doing this is a woman and/or trans woman, suddenly it's a problem. For God's sake, she was literally acknowledging people's criticisms of the finale and agreeing that it could've been better
