Hi Nort:3 I love MOTM and your work with all my heart. Quick question how do you write dialogue and monologue?
My biggest piece of advice is:
You NEED to say the lines outloud to someone else.
There's nothing wrong with corny or cheesy lines here n there, but if the dialogue sounds stilted or robotic or not correct, you and the other person WILL hear it.
Create a specific voice for each character. If your characters all sound the same if you read it out loud then that'll be a lil boring, dontcha think?
For example, when we act out the characters it goes like this
Bendy is a little nasally but also very curt and stand-offish. He can be mischievous however and knows how to poke fun!
Boris is very monotone. He's got a slow almost sad voice l. Despite this, he's still very keen on the things he loves and perks up in speech and in character when they are mentioned
Cuphead uses a LOT of street slang. He's energetic and tends to shorten certain words to get through a sentence faster. He's flippant, but not clueless.
Mugman, while still having street slang like his brother, uses way more eloquence and bigger words with proper intonation. He's very particular about his speech and comes off as "rude"
Shelly is upbeat and bouncy in speech. I have a lot of fun with her, which is the purpose of her speech. She's longwinded and loud but very intelligent in her words.
Fly and I write dialogue in a similar way we talk aloud, just with a bit of a 1930's splash here n there. When we talk we improv the characters and act as them. We role play what they'd do or say in the scenario. it ranges from funny dialog to genuinely heart-wrenching gut churning dramatic scenes.
We read our comic pages back and forth to eachother to see if it sounds right. (This is usually if i haven't written a script beforehand.) after that, we draw out the full scene and read it back again.
