Gaysauce, do you have any advice on writing characters who made colassol mistakes because of something they really want? I've been trying to figure out how with a character in my story and I'd like to see your two cents if you have the time! ^^
I think that entirely depends on what the character did, and how you want them to react.
Do you want them to get better? Do you NOT want them to get better? Do you want to explore their inner turmoil? do you want to explore their thought process in AVOIDING the blame?
One thing that i see a lot of writers not do when writing a character who did bad things is focus on how their actions affected other people.
The reason i didn't like jax so much was because we never got to see her actions from other people's perspectives. It was always told to bolster her character rather than focus on the pain it caused the others. The audience wasn't unwilling to look past it, we just never had the chance to because the show constantly told us to excuse it, making ragatha, pomni, ribbit and hell even gangle into these super passive people who were determined to find some goodness in someone who never showed them the same, and yet the show constantly showed jax having inner turmoil and panic attacks, while having each character reach out and do the work for her to try and understand her.
Everyone did the work for jax, but it made every character INCLUDING jax really flat and boring. If you replaced ribbit with ragatha nothing would change about the story. Same with replacing ragatha with pomni and pomni with zooble and so on and so forth.
What you gotta focus on is what you want to show for the character. You have to tell the audience;
What did this character do? Why was it bad? why should we care that it's bad? Did it hurt anyone? How do they feel? Why should they forgive this character? Should they forgive this character at all??? Will the character continue to try and be better even if no one forgives them?? Will the character get worse??? if they do get worse, How will you tell the audience NOT to be like this?
Obviously i'm generalizing based on little things that i've seen from different stories. I don't know your story but i REALLY WANT TO!!!!
Again i'm not perfect nor am i acting like i am, i just hope these little questions help you bolster yr character!!!
