A warning from Utah to the rest of the country about government overreach.
So who is checking them. The answer is almost nobody. MIDA hires and pays its own private auditor, and the state’s independent auditor is locked out by design.
We only know any of this because of State Auditor Tina Cannon. After thousands of us flooded her office with letters and calls, she listened. She built a public website with an interactive timeline, board history, and every project, and she admitted her own office does not audit MIDA and cannot control the firm that does.
Here is why this matters everywhere. MIDA’s own plan calls this a replicable model. It is a blueprint, and it is already spreading. There is a 12-gigawatt project called Joule in Millard County on a different track, same fast-forward, same water-and-power grab.
The steps never change. MIDA picks the land. The county signs one consent paper, and a commissioner called it irrevocable. The environmental review comes after the deal, not before. And a new law, HB60, strips your right to fight it in court. MIDA is only one of seven state-created entities with this kind of authority. If they can cram this down our throats in Utah, they can do it in your state next. What happens here will not stay here. But we are not powerless. We made the State Auditor act just by showing up and refusing to shut up. We are united, left and right, and we will fight to protect Utah and to warn everyone else.
