"Oh my God. Ouch." Mika Brzezinski watched Fox News try to gaslight America about Donald Trump's crowd size on Monday and lost it on the air. She had just watched a Fox News correspondent stand in front of an empty lawn and try to convince viewers it was packed.
Donald Trump claimed 45,000 people came to his speech kicking off the 250th anniversary celebration on the National Mall. NBC News put it at about a thousand.
The Washington Post described a crowd "thinly covered an area about the length of the National Museum of American History, smaller than some summer outdoor movie screenings."
Fox sent senior national correspondent Kevin Corke down to fix the problem. He sat in front of a wide stretch of grass with maybe two dozen people on it and started talking.
"Sometimes the pictures really don't tell the full story," Corke said. "If you look behind us you see, okay there are a couple hundred people back there. But the truth is when you make your way over here and you're in this wash of people."
The camera held on the grass.
"I'm not kidding," he added. "I think there were thousands."
Morning Joe ran the clip on Monday morning.
The line of the day came from a conservative. Jonah Goldberg, founding editor of National Review Online for two decades, posted in response: "If only they had employees who knew how to operate cameras that could capture these images he describes."
Trump has spent ten years insisting every crowd at every one of his events is the largest ever assembled by anyone.
His staff has spent ten years repeating it. His network has spent ten years finding ways to say it on television.
This time the network put a man in front of a camera and asked the camera to lie with him. Reality said no.
