I watched exactly half an episode worth of Tales from '85 purely to see how they portrayed my girl Nancy. I now have thoughts:
For those who haven't touched the show, the Party and Nancy make a plan to steal back a picture of El using her powers from the UFO sightings type newspaper that involves Nancy acting like an insane person who's convinced she's being abducted by aliens. (This is Nancy's entire contribution to the show)
I will say that I adore that Nancy was willing to do all that to save El, because technically yes, Nancy would do all that if that was what it took to save El. Or any of the kids. She also would be willing to trust the Party to work together on a complicated plan.
However,
Nancy also would have immediately realized that all that was not necessary. She literally wants to work in a newspaper, and already does in the High School. Canon Nancy would more likely have lied her way into a meeting with the chief editor. Sure, that wouldn't have distracted the security guard, but Nancy sure wasn't the best fit for that performance either way.
Nancy is capable of great silliness, but that was not her in '85, and especially not her ever when there was a much smarter and more logical plan that she would have immediately clocked and insisted on.
nancy and the best friend she didn't want
Once again thinking about this bit from one way or another:
“'Nancy Wheeler? She’s little miss Hawkins. Smart girl. Good girl.'
There are three guns stashed in my bedroom right now, Nancy thought.”
She seems like your stereotypical girl next door, but she’s got this entire other world she’s entangled and involved in. She’s not what she seems on the surface. So much of her character is about rejecting the heteronormative picket fence nuclear family. I feel like realizing she’s queer would be such a natural progression for her character.
also really hit home by:
“You think I want that?… A boy, a wedding, a family. You think I want to be like you?”
Like what is the straight explanation for her even saying that? It’s one thing for her to list off a wedding and family as something she doesn’t want, but including a boy in that list? Girlie, what?
She's so queer coded its insane.

repressed nancy girlkisser wheeler i think of you often and with fervor. repressed nancy girlkisser wheeler kissed barb when they were in middle school and they never talked about it but when nancy dreams of barb’s face at night, she can feel her lips on hers, lifeless and cold. repressed nancy girlkisser wheeler sat at the school assemblies and her eyes dropped whenever the cheerleaders flipped and she went home and cried and stood under too-hot shower water until mike banged on the door to yell at her for hogging the bathroom. repressed nancy girlkisser wheeler watches robin buckley laugh at all of steve’s jokes and grin and love and it takes her too long to figure out she’s jealous of steve, not robin, and then she hears upside down on the radio again and cries and cries and cries. repressed nancy girlkisser wheeler did you know you are so loved? did you know it’s not too late? repressed nancy girlkisser wheeler did you know you’re gonna be okay

nancy wheeler joy and whimsy comic
oh ronance, i think about you every day
I just think they deserve to live together in an apartment in Boston in peace, in my head they have minimum of 2 cats I dont make the rules.
(also gang are there maybe any active ronance discord servers out there 👀)
Give me ronance where Robin feels so guilty about liking Nancy, she feels 'predatory' for being a lesbian that likes her straight friend, everytime she catches her self staring too long she thinks she's being opportunistic, especially when Nancy catches her and gets this... look on her face. So she stops looking.
And Nancy is just fucking confused, she thought Robin returned her feelings but now she won't even look at Nancy and always avoids being alone with her. Oh and also she's having sexuality crisis.
So once again, they fr heavily referred to Ripley, constructing Nancy’s image, and want us to believe that she is not queer coded?
Okay sure

I love Nancy’s bitchy little “I’m sorry, who are you?” so much.
There’s no way she didn’t know who Robin is. Hawkins is how fucking small? You live in bumfuck nowhere Indiana. There are not enough students in your school, let alone graduating class, to not have some sort of idea who she is.
It comes off as so fucking petty. Like Nancy’s so annoyed that Robin’s joined their fucked up little friend group without her permission so she decides to be passive aggressive about it.
I wouldn't say she's annoyed that Robin joined the group without her permission, so much as she's confused and annoyed with this random kid from school butting in on a serious conversation when Nancy has no reason to think Robin understands much of anything of what's happening. It was absolutely a bit passive aggressive though.
