I just got a revelation in a neighbouring comment section… it might be an interesting coincidence, or one of the sources of the bros’ inspiration (and a jumpscare for Russian speakers lol)
In 1979 there was a soviet movie, based on the book:
“The Adventures of Elektronik”
The movie tells a story of a boy Elektronik (on the right) created with an appearance of the boy on the left by a soviet scientist professor Gromov. Here’s funny resemblance:
(However, unlike Brenner, Gromov is a good guy.)
The interesting part of it in nowadays perspective is how AI can become a human and whether it can
Elektronik runs away from the professor in the beginning of the movie. He was not supposed to meet Seryozha (a boy he looks like), but ofc they do meet and the adventures begin. Initially, Seryozha mostly uses Elektronik’s powers and their alikeness to solve his daily problems, while Elektronik learns how to be a human. He also meets Seryozha’s friends (they form a party, if you wish), and they shorten his name to El.
At the same time El is chased by a criminal gang that wants to kidnap him and use his powers for a museum robbery.
I don’t know if the DB had this movie in mind either, but it looks like it might be possible, as it certainly has some points of alikeness, especially the motif of the main not-entirely-human character trying to become one: my recent theory is that our El can be a program in Nina (or there is also a theory is that she is a demo), but even if I omit that, she canonically shares with Elektronik the beginning of being (in her situation being treated like) a blank canvas used for scientific purposes. Obviously, from what we know, El is a real girl, but her s1 version is feral, and she evolves into a more human version of herself through the following season at least. And so does Elektronik through the movie. They both are chased, while the only thing they want is to learn how to be a human — and a friend.
In ST plot El by nature is human unlike Elektronik, and yet he, being a canonical robot, gets what he wants, and that’s my another reason to believe that this is available for a canonical girl too.
Other things relevant to ST:
• twin brothers playing main characters • the movie is full of songs (which is typical, but still) • soviet scientists here vs soviet spies in ST? • in 1979? (not that the movie is connected, just interesting)

okay so with all the new byler variants popping up left and right, I propose:

Will works at scoops and Mike works at surferboy pizza
The bathroom coming out scene except it’s the wonder twins and jane is the best sister ever (also she would absolutely rock a scoops uniform you cannot convince me otherwise)
Madwheeler getting high in the back of the van in between deliveries and Mike just randomly mentioning that he thinks he’s gay and Max just kind of goes “okay” and then “oh look scoops ahoy ordered another pizza- waaaait do you like will???”
Mike Wheeler was five years old, and five-year-old Mike knew a lot of important things.
He knew dinosaurs were cool. He knew that Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters’ cereals weren’t as good as Fruit Loops but mostly he knew that his mom had once said, very seriously, “If you kiss someone, you should marry them.”
So when he gave Will Byers a quick kiss on the cheek during recess because Will had shared his cookies with him, Mike didn’t think much about it at first, but then he froze while his eyes got huge.
“Oh no.”
Will blinked. “What?”
Mike grabbed both of Will’s hands.
“What?” Will asked again, laughing a little.
“I kissed you.”
“And?”
Mike nodded urgently. “And my mom said if you kiss someone, you’re supposed to marry them.”
Will considered this with all the seriousness a five-year-old could manage.
“Oh.”
“So …” Mike said, digging through the pockets of his tiny overalls. “I think we have to.”
Will tilted his head. “Have to what?”
“Get married.”
From his pocket, Mike pulled out a little toy rocket ship.
Will gasped.
It was probably the fanciest thing Mike owned.
Mike held it out with both hands.
“Will Byers, will you marry me?”
Will stared at the toy for a moment before taking it carefully.
“Okay.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
Mike beamed so hard his cheeks hurt.
“Cool.”
“Cool.”
Then they sat together in the grass.
“What’s marriage?” Will asked after a minute.
Mike thought very hard.
“I think it means you always share snacks.”
Will nodded.
“Okay. Then we’re already good at it.”
Mike grinned and leaned against his shoulder.
“Yeah. We are.”
And as far as five-year-old Mike was concerned, that made them the happiest married couple in the whole playground.
one thing I lwk regret about dmitmu (pls if the author is on tumblr, don’t read it, it’s just a small thing, and I love the fic, and don’t want to make you upset if it matches with your feelings)
is that the cards never came back in the ending 👀 don’t hate me pls, I loved the ending and I was crying for an hour or so over it, and I absolutely love that fic and left an according review for the author. although this idea about the cards haunts me, and I have an assumption that the author maybe would’ve loved to hint at that somehow in the finale, as she apparently loves callbacks and flashbacks and everything to make her story work in such a subtle way. and this is exactly the thing I love about that fic. and that’s why I have a feeling that she could’ve just missed this idea, working hard on the finale. also I have a feeling that probably she felt like adding the flashback about the prom in earlier chapters to make that callback the same way she worked witht the cards questions. it’s understandable for ongoings as you can’t to edit earlier chapters that much, and you might get a cool idea later, but it so complicated to build it in in any other way than in what you’re writing atm… maybe (most likely) these are just my projections, bc that would be absolutely how I would’ve felt having these two meaningful events in the past, and probably forgetting to add a hint and probably regretting that I can’t add another thing in the beginning… so yeah, I just wanted to share this, not being sure where it could be ethically correct. in case the author didn’t think about these things and could suddenly agree wity this, I wouldn’t want to make her upset. Idk, I just want to talk about the fic, and my gratitude has been sent to the author already. so yep idk
As Mike has already thought that he wants “Will to be in love with him” and didn’t pay attention to that thought, I believe he’s oblivious enough to still miss the main point my son is such a gosling sorry about that and bc of this he would’ve absolutely randomly blurted that he’s in love with Will not as a confession, but like all the things he was saying in ch14, just occasionally smth like: “I understand if you’re overwhelmed with me wanting it, it’s just so complicated for me bc I’ve never been actually in love, and I’m so sorry that I can’t control it, when you don’t need it. It’s okay, we can just kiss, I mean, not “just kiss”, like it’s not a big deal, and not that I’m making a big deal out of it, I mean—”. And Will would be like: “W— Wait, wait, wait,” and then cracks a smile. “You’ve never been in what?”

the whole concept is for Mike to say that casually, like it’s not a big deal whatsoever, and he’s never thought of it as of something standing out 💘
