Way back in 2015, Oregon's former Governor, Kate Brown, signed into law HB 2307, a ban on state-licensed mental health professionals using “conversion therapy” on young LGBTQ clients.

That made Oregon one of just three states, plus the District of Columbia, to adopt such a ban. The other two: California and New Jersey.

Conversion therapy, also called reparative therapy, aims to “fix” or “cure” sexual orientation and gender identity, making gay people straight and trans people gender-conforming. It has been widely discredited by mental health professionals and organizations, including the American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Counseling Association.

It can also be harmful. According to the National Center for Lesbian Rights, young people are at particular risk from conversion therapy, with a fivefold jump in their likelihood of severe depression and three times the risk they will use illegal drugs.

Diane Goodwin, Communications Director at Basic Rights Oregon, which has been fighting for the law since its inception, said, “The Youth Mental Health Protection Act will protect LGBTQ youth in Oregon who may be struggling with their identities, as so many of us do during our teenage years. We believe that all of us are born perfect and should be celebrated for who we are. We are thrilled we were able to work with the Oregon legislature to pass this bill.”

Overbrook Asylum Cover-Up: 24 Patients Vanished. They Didn't 'Disappear'; They Froze to Death

In the late 1890s, Overbrook Asylum opened in Essex County, New Jersey. To the outside world, it seemed plausible that Overbrook would provide humane treatment for people with mental illness. In practice, those confined to a new "lunatic asylum" like Overbrook included the poor, wounded, sick with T.B., diphtheria and other physical illnesses, and if women were admitted, husbands decided when they were "well," not doctors.

Care was not humane for those who weren't considered human, and "curative" methods and devices included trap doors, cold water, crude restraints like wet sheet packs, lobotomy, electroshock, physical punishment, public humiliation and replacing their names with numbers.

In January 1917, 24 men allegedly froze to death in their beds at Overbrook Asylum, although the boiler failure had been reported months earlier. Nobody was held accountable.

The Overbrook Asylum has since closed, but the same sort of thing was happening at the Oregon State Hospital through the 20th Century — like the patient who didn't show up for breakfast, lunch, or medications for a number of days. Finally he was found dead, in full view of the nurses' station.

Sheriff Grady Judd, Polk County, Florida is on the job!

He announced the arrest of a 28-year-old man who hit the road to take an underage minor female from another state, hold her in Florida and have sex with her. She is now safe. I don't know if the man's name will go on the Sex Offenders Registry, but this was human trafficking and should be prosecuted as such.

My Little Sister Naomi (1961-2011)

Naomi Susan Levich was born July 28, 1961 and passed away on Monday, June 13, 2011.

She received an MSW (Masters in Social Work) degree from Portland State University, and worked as a counselor at the Veterans Administration in Southern Oregon until she was diagnosed with metastatic tissue melanoma (skin cancer).

After many months of treatment, she returned to her hometown, Portland, Oregon, and passed with dignity and grace at Providence Portland Medical Center. Her Celebration of Life took place at the Buddhist Priory.
