To my non-Episcopalians: when we do communion, we have two rites to choose from for prayer, and each rite has 4 main prayer outlines to read from. Rite 2, prayer 3 of the thanksgiving said before the Eucharist is often called the 'Star Wars prayer' because it mentions space and the universe —since, ya know, God is the King of all of it —and vaguely alludes to evolution. Episcopalians are known for being real big on science and God coexisting together. Climate change is often discussed openly in our churches, as is evolution. We are the science girlies 🪐.
Anyways, rite 2:3 mentions space a lot, and non-Episcopalians love to make fun of it:
God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of
glory and praise.
Glory to you for ever and ever.
At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of
interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses,
and this fragile earth, our island home.
By your will they were created and have their being.

This is a wonderful way to start the Eucharistic thanksgiving, thank you very much! Space is cool! God made it, and He made it to be cool!! And I think, deep down, you know how cool the star wars prayer is, too. Y'all all just hate fun >:(((

I think a lot of people, especially nevermos, could learn quite a bit from the idea that Mormon 'commandments' and 'rules' are more like the Hippocratic Oath than government-regulated laws. The Oath is old and steeped in tradition; some parts remain less relevant than others (the pessary line in the Oath, for example), yet it is still something that almost all doctors promise to follow. It's as much cultural as it is technical and moral.
If a doctor doesn't follow the Hippocratic Oath, that is a reflection on themselves, rather than the morals of the entire organization. One bad doctor does not make every other doctor bad. They were all given the same rules to follow, and some decided not to. Breaking bigger rules can result in a loss of licensure and privileges, but breaking smaller rules can sometimes go unnoticed.
The same can be said of all of this for commandments and guidelines that Mormons promise to follow. Truly, purposefully following these rules can make you a better person, but if you choose not to follow them, that is a personal decision and a personal failing.
this country is so culturally Protestant that y’all will call anything with an ounce of ritual a cult. I don’t care if you’re gay, so am I, you are still culturally conditioned with a level of iconoclasm that is instinctively judgmental and incurious.
"If You Could Hie to Kolob" is fascinatingly aware of the physical universe in a way that's really unique for Christianity. Like everyone else is reluctantly admitting Earth orbits around the sun, and Mormons are over there going "SPACE AND MATTER ARE BASICALLY INFINITE AND GOD DID THAT! HOW COOL IS THIS??"
Also it gets weirdly Buddhist / Hindu, about the endless cycle of existence and how we can therefore draw simple joy from eternity, not inherently fear it as moral beings in a vast and ancient universe.
Pretty impressive for a song written by an American white guy in 1842.
Also W. W. Phelps was excommunicated and rejoined the LDS Church THREE TIMES.
Say what you will about these people, they seem to take that forgiveness thing seriously.

They way people talk about Mormons is kinda crazy tho. Like there’s this Christian church whose main thing is that everyone goes to heaven and there’s no hell, and like 90% of them are the nicest people you’ll ever meet but then in this one specific part of the US there’s a bunch of them and they’re a little weird, which is to be expected cause anyone would be if you get all of the same kind of people and put them in a desert. Sometimes you’ll talk to someone that left that church and they’ll claim it’s a cult and tell you all about their childhood and you’re like ‘gotta be honest with you buddy I think your parents and neighbors were just abusing you’.
So much of what I see on the internet about Mormonism is completely different from what I've experienced as a Mormon.
My family is Mormon through and through. I've only ever lived in Utah. Nearly all of my extended family graduated from BYU. You can trace my family to the earliest pioneers. I am the ultimate cultural Mormon. And here are some ThingsTM:
My grandparents on both sides celebrated when I declared as a young girl that I was going to be a scientist. They bought me chemistry kits and let me read their science magazines.
Everyone vaccinates their children.
We are a family of doctors, therapists, chiropractors, dentists, optometrists, entomologists, and more.
Many of my family members are educators, from preschool to middle school.
We play TTRPGs, board games, and video games together.
When I was little they took me to the BYU Bean Museum, and we admired the section on evolution. This is a core memory because their wall of skulls is so cool.
My parents gave me a comprehensive sex education. The only things they didn't teach me were the things they didn't know themselves.
I only learned about "science vs religion" in high school. It never crossed my mind that they could be at odds before then.
Also, I grew up asking questions and getting answers.
Does God have a name that isn't God? Yes, little one, and this is what it is.
Did God have a dad or did He just start existing one day? We aren't sure, but here's some theories/essays/books on the matter.
What is the purpose of [X] tradition? Here's the symbolism and how it relates to other religious and historical symbolism.
Will I no longer have OCD when I'm resurrected? I have no idea, but I do know that we will be happy. It'll probably be whatever makes you happiest--perhaps just getting rid of the bad parts?
Why does that person wear a tiny hat? They're our Jewish brethren, they wear religious clothes just like us.
I don't understand this teaching, do I have to follow it? You don't have to do anything, but here's why I personally follow it.
What do I do about doubts? Doubts are good; our religion is based on a man who had doubts. He asked God directly by praying, and you can do the same. You can also check out these resources, or ask one of us.
Of course, my family isn't perfect, but none of their faults trace back to the church. It usually just traces back to them being old (we're teaching them about what words are slurs, don't worry).
