Grose for the Times about how we as a society don't value useless goofy liberal arts majors anymore, which means students actually have to think about getting jobs now and not just meandering around and finding themselves, which is what college is supposed to be about!
Here is the thing, lady. It was only ever about that for privileged white kids who didn't have to worry about time or money, because no matter what shit degree they got, someone they knew would hand them a middle management job, or something in sales. ...Up until the Recession. Then, not so much.
The economy is brutal and hopeless and cut-throat now. And that's bad. But the glory days of college being a sexy right-of-passage for middle class people who were going to be okay either way was, for one thing, a thing that just happened and was never a guarantee, and for another...was probably not a good thing?
Taxpayers were subsidizing ever-ballooning costs for fancy lad degrees that weren't EVER actually used for what they were, but just as permission slips to get a job with a living wage. Which is what a high school diploma was supposed to be. Until public school standards declined, and colleges had to start teaching freshmen basic math and reading comprehension. Because the focus got impractial and everyone got lazy and no one was taking any of it seriously.
Like I know I'm on the "FREE COLLEGE FOR ALL" website. And fine. But we never talk about what degrees / training you would be obligated to get, under that system. And we should. If the State under socialism is going to manage the economy, they're not letting everyone be philosophy and religious studies majors. A college diploma has functional utility. To romanticize otherwise shows you haven't thought about this very seriously, especially not enough to mourn the loss of what was arguably a bad idea in the first place.
