This was supposed to be a simple adaptation of the Naassene Hymn, a fragmentary quoted Gnostic hymn, oo spooky and magical, esoteric, nice, bro. As I do.
The problem is, after I adapted it, I kept fiddling with it. And damn if it didn't get infected by my other wide-ranging interests.
I didn't change any lyrics. But it suddenly started feeling like a song from a musical about the founding of Mormonism. Like, this is a scene in Heaven, where Jesus and the Divine Council are looking down at Earth in the 1820s, and going, "Hey. Maybe we should revive Christianity before the 20th century, here." And discussing it with Heavenly Father. Who of course was anticipating this. Lol.
Text in red is in Jesus's voice.
"She" refers to humanity / the Church.
I really need to stop reconverting myself to Mormonism every weekend. It never holds, because I disagree with so much of what they do.
Yet the ether keeps feeding me mystical Mormon revelations. Idk.
...No I didn't go to church yet. I'm too busy shooting whiskey and doing shit like this.
......Also good metaphor for what Mormon missionaries do. Huh.
Verse 1:
Mind was first, it gave us reason,
Chaos followed, scattered far,
Soul was third, queen of seasons,
Wrapped in water, chained by stars.
Worn by grief, held by death's power,
Sinking low in sorrow's bed,
Yet she rises to rule the hour
Alive with light, the rising dead.
Pre-Chorus:
Helpless soul, alone and torn,
Wandering, alone and ill,
Lost in hopeless halls and scorned,
Searching for a drink that fills.
Chorus:
Look down, Father, see her running,
Chased by evil through the dark,
She would flee the Chaos coming,
But she cannot find the spark.
So send me down, sealed and burning,
I will walk through Eon’s door,
Show the secret paths, discerning,
Name the gods who hid before.
I’ll call it Knowing, sun returning
Light the holy path once more.
Verse 2:
She's weeping, bound in deep distress,
She's laughing, lifted from the fall,
She's sentenced, shackled by the mess
Condemned, but now forgiveth all.
Now she's crushed beneath the wheel,
Now she's free to run once more,
Round and round, this ageless reel,
Not knowing what she's living for.
Pre-Chorus:
Helpless soul, alone and tattered
Wandering, alone and ill,
Lost in hopeless halls and scattered,
Searching for a drink that fills.
Chorus:
Look down, Father, see her running,
Chased by evil through the dark,
She would flee the Chaos coming,
But she cannot find the spark.
So send me down, sealed and burning,
I will walk through Eon's door,
Show the secret paths, discerning,
Name the gods who hid before.
I'll call it Knowing, sun returning,
Light the holy path once more.
I’ll call it Knowing, sun returning,
Light the holy path once more.
