you run your touch over the tall grass, in this lonely lonely country. this land is thirsty, you think to yourself. then to your left you hear his laugh. it's noisy, it lures you in. he laughs like he'll never laugh next. like he knows his laughs. he's counting the ones he's got left. you turn to view him, in his tattered overcloak. he's nothing like the boys from your fishing village. he's nothing like the boys from the river. he's a bit like his cousin, the one that consumed locusts over nectar. but his laugh is very luring. he calls your name, gestures to you. his twelve friends break the horizon with him. you like them like brothers. only this kid from nazareth could gather love like bushels of ripe, rindy fruit. only this kid from nazareth could tell you you're loved, and you know it to be true
I need to let the rain wash me clean. I need to sit at the Rabbi’s knee when he settles down to teach. I need to be cradled and for you to cradle me. I need to let my friends lower me through the roof of the house. I need to eat with people I love. I need to accept the fish and bread that is being offered to me. I need to be in the middle of the crowds, only glimpsing, forgoing the clear view. I need to be in the temple square, I need to offer water at the well. I need to let you baptize me. I need to touch and be touched. I need to wander in the desert and share my manna. I need to stop on the roadside, I need to let you put me on your donkey.
Therapist said he was getting a weird vibe from me and a minute later I started crying which seemed to restore the balance
I need to go out to the desert and be in a cave for a while. I need to go wrestle an angel. I need to confront the devil. I need to name God. I need to be alone. I need to weep my laments over the hills. I need to see if Isaac is still up on the mountain.
This is wrong, actually, hold on
Sometimes the call to solitude is from God, but often, for me, it is something else pretending to be God. The call of isolation is very seductive.
What I actually need to do right now is let the rain wash me clean. I need to sit at the Rabbi’s knee when he settles down to teach. I need to take and eat the fish and bread that is being miraculously offered to me. I need to be cradled and I need to let you cradle me. I need to let my friends lower me through the roof of the house. I need to be in the middle of the crowds, only glimpsing. I need to eat with people I love. I need to go to church and grieve. I need to reach out for the hem of the cloak in front of me.

Every day my guinea pig is like "What's for dinner? I really hope it's hay!!" And then when it's hay he says "oh wow!!! Hay!! My favorite!" And then the next morning he asks me, "Can I please have some hay for breakfast???" and when he gets his hay it's so exciting that he jumps all around.
Anyway there's something in there about god and humans and love.
Once my friend told me that he felt Christian imposter syndrome sometimes because he had never had a big, life altering encounter with God. But we encounter God everywhere. It's in the way you let me sit on your couch and ramble about a breakup when we barely knew each other. It's in sunshine. Laughter. The faces of my friends who have never set foot in a church. It's in all the people who have shown me grace and mercy when I wholly didn't deserve it. It's the ache you've been trying to explain. It's the way that birds just know when to push their babies out of the nest. The way that I have found myself back in church even though no one would blame me if I hadn't. The way that we, creatures from a miniscule part of the universe, not only wanted to, but taught ourselves how to look into deep space. The sound of water flowing along a creek. It's the rhythm of the ocean, beating since before our species existed. You can go your whole life without having a big, come-to-jesus, altar call moment when you were "saved," and that's ok. Your faith doesn't have to run on adrenaline highs and intensity. God's in the still small voice. All the little miracles around you.
i’ve seen too much queer joy and queer kindness in my life to ever believe that God does not exist within queer folk and walk in queer spaces.
God is a drag queen. God is a closeted teenager. God is a trans woman. God is a lesbian. God is asexual. God is intersex. God is queer as fuck, don’t forget it.

I'm curious because I've never attended a Lutheran church, how different is a Catholic mass from a Lutheran service?
Hi Rhett :)
So the thing about Lutherans is that we tend to care way more about doctrinal unity and then run the full gambit of worship expressions. You will find Lutheran churches at every point on the spectrum, from mega church style to hippie acoustic praise band types to full high church liturgy (stopping short of the latin). We don’t view the structure of the service or the liturgy to be inherently holy, but to be one of a variety of tools and pathways to encountering God in his house.
The most average Lutheran church will have a service that bills itself as traditional— meaning hymns and a liturgy, usually on a piano or organ, depending on the church. Overall, the liturgy is fairly similar to the regular Roman Catholic Mass in structure. I wouldn’t exactly call it more laid back, but perhaps a little bit more plain. Different congregations go in for different amounts of chanting vs spoken word.
One of the big difference you will see is that Lutherans do not regularly practice private confession. At the top of the service, usually after an opening hymn, we all publicly read the liturgy Confession and Absolution (there are different settings and wordings from time to time but the main beats are always the same). Together we publicly confess our sins, both inward and outward, of action and inaction, and ask for Gods forgiveness and guidance in the future. Absolution is then dispensed by the pastor, without a prescribed penance. I know there is a similar prayer included in the RC mass, but the mechanisms at play are a bit different.
There are three readings, the Lutherans use the same lectionary as the Catholics (and the Episcopalians and several more), though if a pastor or worship team wants to deviate from it, they can. It is rather rare, especially in churches that use the liturgy, to do so, though. At my church we chant the psalm responsively, but not all liturgy arrangements include that. You’ll stand and sit through various parts of the service but it’s pretty rare to find a Lutheran church that practices kneeling, though some do so optionally. You’ll recite either the Apostles or Nicene Creed together. You’ll pray the Lord’s Prayer before communion.
Another big difference is how communion is practiced — there are multiple different Lutheran bodies because we simply like arguing too much to unite fully, I guess. Who can take communion where varies depending on what denomination of Lutheranism you’re present with, and for the more conservative groups, it can also vary depending on the pastor. Nevertheless, the ELCA, my church and the biggest Lutheran body, practices open communion. All Lutherans believe in consubstantiation— that the host is at once bread and wine AND body and blood. Like Jesus as a human, it doesn’t lose one part of its nature in the process of transformation. We do, definitely and truly, believe that it IS Christs real presence with us, so we speak a very similar liturgy of consecration over it. In churches like mine that practice open communion, anyone who believes this, regardless of denomination or belonging (or even baptismal status if your clergy are so inclined) can partake.
All in all, I’ve found that Catholics are very at home in Lutheran services. We tend to spell things out a little bit more, such as telling the congregation what section of the hymnal to follow with or printing these directions in the bulletin, in a way I always feel a little lost without in mass. My grandma was Catholic and my grandpa was Baptist and they raised my dad Lutheran because they both found things they could be comfortable with in those services!
