to me, the cruelest thing that eva stratt does is not the kidnappig itself. it's that she tells grace that he does not even have a dog. dr ryland grace, a man who dedicated his life to the greater good, first to science and then to teaching, does indeed not have a dog. and because of this, he has to spend his last precious moments on his home planet with the full knowledge that while he might be smart enough to save the world, he is not loved enough by anyone on it to be worth saving

Something about how in the movie, Grace's first memory to resurface in full starts with his class lesson on sound waves- how patterns form based on the pitch of the sound, how you can manipulate it if you want a certain reaction from it. Something about how it turns out that's how his future best friend sees, a connection between them almost at the very start of the movie. Something about how it's not just a lesson to his kids but a lesson to the audience as well, the first context clue given to us about the events up ahead in the story, a teacher through and through.

Its actually so important to me that Ryland Grace is a teacher. Not a professor, not someone at the top of their field teaching the smartest people, but a middle school science teacher. Of course he figured out how to communicate with an alien in under a day. His main expertise is explaining complex subjects to a group that doesnt have the vocabulary or context to fully understand them. He knows exactly how to simplify things down to its core principles without sacrificing any of the scientific logic. And he knows how to do it without having to throw around hyperspecific terminology.
