I'm increasingly convinced that the biggest split in fandom is a focus on lore (things explicitly stated in the text, emphasis on creator's opinions, everything is strictly literal and nothing more than what it is) vs. symbols/metaphors (meaning implied or inferred through context, exists on multiple levels, open to interpretation, death of the author).
Ironically, symbols/metaphors incorporate lore as a level of meaning, but lore has no way to accommodate symbols/metaphors and thus is frequently blindsided by them.
Roronoa Zoro and Donquixote Rosinante: I need them in ways that invent new types of sin in every religion.
