A character trait/dynamic that I'm endlessly compelled by is someone dealing with (or, like, failing to) being the child of people who were too busy being good people to have the time and attention to be good parents. This can be anywhere from 'was a public defender who gave a shit working 60 hour weeks with basically no vacations' to 'left their family behind to join the revolution/war effort and is now a universally beloved martyr-hero who saved/remade the world with their final breath' on the groundedness spectrum. The important thing is a viscerally felt but confused and ugly mess of longing, resentment, and guilt about feeling the resentment.
y'all wanna see the random online thing that's ragebaiting me and forcing me to think about why it makes me mad today?
the original post:
the replies, all of which had my eye twitching:
"the first line needs to be good or else I'll pass" GOOD IS SUBJECTIVE?????
the most offensive one:
and the one that deeply enraged me because of the OP's reply:
that is EXACTLY what you're talking about!!! because as previously mentioned, "good" is subjective (to a degree) when it comes to fiction!!
I watched the movie, finally. Solid adaptation of the book tbh
The karaoke scene is genuinely incredible though
I think a lot of Grace's character arc is lost by having him get kicked out of academia, rather than him leaving on his own volition.
That's part of what made the story so appealing to me, is that all of his personal issues are things that he's actively choosing to make worse for himself, rather than it being the fault of society or his parents or his own genetics or whatever
Anyways. Thinking about the Eridian OC I came up with a while ago...
"Opal"
-from a race that has an unusually high amount of xenonite in their carapaces, which makes it look like her carapace is nearly see-through
-epidemiologist/laboratory scientist who is very, very, VERY against bringing a human or anything from Earth onto Erid. Who knows what kind of diseases would be introduced to the environment?
- refuses to speak directly to Grace for a while. Grace thinks it's because he's staring at the internal structures that are visible, she's actually just embarrassed about how outspoken she was about not having him her
-eventually starts working with Grace to figure out rudimentary antibiotics (maybe she keeps bringing him samples of... whatever counts as fungi on Erid)
-her name in Eridian sounds unnervingly like the beat drop from Sweet Caroline (much to her frustration, the rest of the researchers and scientists start doing three little stomps after it's said aloud. Nasty habit they picked up from Grace)
Her mate is "Egg", he's based on a cat's eye gem. I imagine he's whatever the Eridani equivalent of a teacher is. He helps decide which students are going to go into Grace's class
They have an offspring (I like the idea that they're called pebbles!) who's just about one Eridian-year old. Very teeny tiny, still learning how to walk and all that. I imagine that newly hatched Eridians aren't able to communicate super well, and make noises that sound like guinea pig squeaks when they need something
I enjoy the way the book explores their anatomy and society more than the movie does, but I am a big fan of how the Eridians actually look in the movie. Amaze amaze amaze

Do I post my terrible (disgraphia-ridden) Eridian OC on here or do I die
