like, it's not just about the dangers of stagnation. it's about the dangers of believing that social progress has an end point. rassilon didn't just create a society for no reason, he created it very specifically in response to a previous status quo that was oppressive and awful...but decided that now that he'd "solved" all those previous societal issues, that means Society Is Perfect Now And Must Never Change Again. we did it, guys, we won activism forever! the change we affected was necessary and legitimate, but any further change is Just Going Too Far!

when in reality of course the new post-revolution society had its own plethora of new post-revolution societal issues. every society has issues. it's unavoidable. every bit of change is going to come with some new Problem; people are imperfect, so there will never be a truly perfect society that is totally free from all oppression and biases etc. and no longer has any need to keep moving forward.

but isn't it so easy, when you've spent your life fighting for something, to want to believe the fight is over?

and this mentality turns former progressives into centrists and conservatives in real life all the time. so many people are progressive until the progress is actually made and then they decide "okay, that's enough," and start decrying the social movements that come later as "too far."

it's like...the time lords suck, generally speaking, but the context of their society being the product of a successful revolution adds a whole new dimension to it. that as long as you consider a "perfect" society to be a legitimately achievable goal, you are not immune to conservatism no matter how radical you may be right now. it's not enough to be against the current status quo, you have to accept that the status quo will always have room for improvement.

Grace was put into coma by the people who cared about him. They (especially Yáo being Yáo) probably double-triple-quadruple checked everything. They watched him sleep for those first few days — I doubt they went into coma immediately after leaving Earth's orbit. They probably talked to him, assuring him that he'll be okay.

Ilyukhina's coma procedure was probably supervised by Yáo. He made sure that everything was in order, but — he is just one man and he is not a doctor. There was much more room for mistakes.

When Yáo went to sleep, he was alone. He had to rely on the technology completely.

would become particularly irked when he was being put to death as a scapegoat for others to avoid dealing with their problems when there were alternative solutions.
