i’m going to be really honest with you guys i think the tendency to read the absolute worst possible intentions into every action you don’t agree with is getting too automatic and it’s eating you from the inside out
Summer continued, warm and welcome. Firestar took to walking by the border of the Houses, lingering by his old fenceline until he caught sight of Brick, which became rhythmic enough that he could count on every third visit becoming an impromptu meeting.
It was a fascinating thing, to watch Brick’s posture straighten and his tail lift high and tall over the course of half a month. Even when he had nothing to report or ask, he chatted about this and that with Firestar before returning to the streets and wishing the Clans well. Firestar wondered to himself if Brick just wanted a friend to speak with that was in the same level of authority.
“We ain’t planning to be as complex as your system,” Brick mentioned one night. “But it helps to have more than one cat in command. Fury’s a mighty good leader, I’ll give her that.”
“Are you back to negotiating?” Firestar asked, half-joking.
Brick, to his surprise, looked pleased with himself. “I am. Got two little gangs to back off of our space just the other night. Got a couple of their members to come with me, too.” He inhaled deeply, his eyes distant and reflecting. “It’s funny. I’m so much more productive than I ever was with the Blood, and that was such a higher position than where I am now.” His sunniness faded a little and he grimaced. “At least I don’t have to decide who gets to eat what deplorable meal we were given this time around.”
Firestar decided not to pry into that; the very memory made his stomach churn the more he thought about it. Instead, he said brightly, “Now you act for real hope, not false promises. Oh- you said you were talking to a pregnant queen, last time. How is she now?”
His good mood was squashed instantly as Brick’s face darkened. With a sigh, the tom said, “She got caught in a trap.”
Firestar wilted. “...Oh.”
“She hasn’t come back yet.” Brick’s eyes drifted somewhere to the right of his feet. “We’re assuming she’ll return, but. You know.”
Silence, briefly, set over them. Firestar’s stomach went cold and twisty.
Brick was the one to speak, and when he did, he started with another sigh. “Said it before, but I’m really starting to think we’ll be the last generation in town. Maybe some others will come in, I don’t know. But too many cats are missing a chunk of their ear.” He grimaced. “Don’t know what to do about that.”
Neither of them wanted to say it, but they knew.
There was nothing to be done.
Firestar swallowed a lump in his throat, which plopped into his stomach and nauseously rolled around. “Well… well…”
He had nothing. He closed his mouth.
Eventually, Brick rolled his shoulder. “It’ll be alright. Somehow.” He lifted his chin again. “Didn’t mean to bring the mood down. I better get back to the crew.”
“Right,” Firestar said quietly. “I’ll be walking by around this time again if you need me.”
Brick nodded, waved his tail, and turned away. He was around the corner of the fenceline in a few moments, leaving Firestar alone with his thoughts.
It was a stretch of time before Firestar stood up and started walking. He didn’t pay much mind to where he was going, only that he was in the forest again.
An old, powerful guilt had woken up again and started clawing at his mind, fear pummeling his heart. Memories flashed over his eyes: failing to save the pregnant calico from the trap; thin and ratty cats glaring at him as he passed them by, looking for a way to help; screaming waves of Aulmir cats fleeing WindClan’s hill at the sight of their disemboweled leader…
Wetness hit Firestar’s front paw and he nearly fell when he stumbled in surprise. He managed to catch himself and looked down.
Ah. A very thin puddle lay at his feet, a remnant of a small spring stream that had been almost completely evaporated by the summer heat.
Firestar gazed at it in silence, leaning a little closer without thinking. His reflection was dim, but he could see his face well enough. Funny – even as well as he was doing now, his eyes were...different. Heavier. Older, maybe, might have been the best way to describe them.
Some cursed instinct made them flick up a little to his brow. A couple lines ran straight across it, parting the fur there; a reminder of what he’d done. He swallowed air, staring at these scars, and lifted a paw to touch them. He couldn’t feel anything, but…
He looked at his pawpad and flinched at the dark mark on it.
Was that blood?
It was blood, wasn’t it?
He dipped his paw in the water and scrubbed at his brow. How could it be bleeding? It had to have healed by now, right?
The dark mark remained on his pad, the exact same shape and size. He splashed it around in the puddle and scrubbed again, teeth clenched.
Eyes were on him. Somewhere in this forest, somewhere close, ice-blue eyes stared at him, pupils round.
He smelled blood now. He wanted to vomit.
Something muddied and faint brushed against his ears. His brow was soaked now – with blood, he was certain. Why wasn’t it coming off?
“...irestar?”
He couldn’t be seen like this. He huddled, paw braced against his head. His forehead pulsed with pain.
“Firestar!”
He screwed his eyes as tightly shut as they could go, wincing when something broad landed on his back and shook him a little.
“What in the world are you doing?” someone said. It took a moment for Firestar to register the owner of the voice.
“I’m…” he started weakly, looking up and to his side, to Ravenwing’s worried gaze “Cleaning up my face?”
Greystripe, on the other side, squinted. “Your face is clean, bud.”
“We just assumed you were talking to Brick, so we came to find you,” Ravenwing explained. “Was that…was that not what you were doing?”
“I…” Firestar took a moment to nod. “I mean, yeah. But I was bleeding, so I…”
He flinched when Greystripe’s broad nose touched his forehead and sniffed. “You’re not wounded at all. What are you talking about?”
Firestar’s paw went to his brow again. “You don’t see the scratches?”
Greystripe’s paw carefully brushed Firestar’s head-fur the wrong way. His eyes narrowed, and then widened again.
“Oh,” he said. “Okay. I see.”
“What is it?” Ravenwing leaned in close.
Firestar fought back the feeling of being overcrowded, letting his friends examine his head.
“He’s got scars here.” Greystripe pushed back the fur again. “From, uh… something.”
Ravenwing’s response was quiet and slow. “…Right. I never noticed them before.”
“Why didn’t anyone tell me I had them?” Firestar asked, weakly again.
“They’re covered by your fur,” Ravenwing said. His eyes lowered to meet his friend’s. “You said they were bleeding?”
Firestar nodded.
“They’re completely healed,” Greystripe said. He lifted his paw away and gave Firestar a sad look.
“But…” Firestar looked at the paw he’d been scrubbing them with. “There was blood on…”
He winced. The blood on his paw was a patch of dark skin, calloused by a life of running and climbing and bruising.
“Oh,” he said, muted.
In silence, Greystripe and Ravenwing sat down on either side of Firestar. He was sure they were looking at each other to decide who was going to speak first. He just stared at his paw, trying and failing to see blood again.
“What happened with Brick?” Ravenwing said finally. “Is something wrong?”
Firestar’s voice took a moment to come to him. “They…lost a queen to the traps. In Brick’s group.”
He didn’t need to look up to know his friends flinched in unison.
“Had me…” Firestar gestured aimlessly. “It had me thinking. About everything before.”
Ravenwing again, hesitant. “And you thought you saw blood.”
Firestar nodded. He still didn’t look up.
It was a very long time before anyone spoke again. Firestar had to breathe slowly and steadily to ease his stomach’s bile that threatened to burst out of his mouth.
“I thought it was over,” he said finally. He hated how pathetic he sounded. “I’ve had the odd dream here and there, but…I really thought I got better. I was doing so good, and now…” He dropped his paw back to the ground, at long last. “And now I can’t see anything but the cats I hurt.”
Greystripe’s fur brushed against his, and a careful, heavy weight leaned on his side. “You know none of that was your fault, bud. Humans did everything that the Blood didn’t.”
Firestar’s face contorted into a scowl. “It’s a lot easier said than thought.” His teeth clenched for the first time in a month, his words squeezing through them. “There’s a part of my head that won’t shut up, even when I’m feeling good. It just sits there, waiting for me to see the smallest thing, and then it shoves every horrible thing in my face and won’t let me look away.”
Ravenwing’s weight now. The pressure on both sides was oddly welcome. It prompted Firestar to keep going.
“I thought I’d be free of it,” he said. “I thought the pain went away. At least most of it.”
At this, Ravenwing spoke quietly. “I don’t think that’s the kind of pain that goes away.”
Firestar looked up at him. His eyes were unfocused and half-shut, sadly resigned.
“It’ll fade, I think,” Ravenwing continued. “But it won’t die forever. Not for you. You care too much to let it.”
“Which is a good thing,” Greystripe added.
Firestar and Ravenwing stared at him, slightly squinting, but he didn’t hastily correct himself or so much as wince at their confused scrutinizing.
“I mean it,” he said. “It’s horrible to live with, yeah. But it means you’ve still got that heart of yours that cares about everyone, no matter who they are or what they’ve done.” He gave his friend a warm look. “That’s a strength, Firestar. You were ready to take on the pain of the entirety of the Aulmir without a second thought. And you never stopped caring, even when they were trying to kill you. I don’t know anyone else who would or even could do that.”
Ravenwing now nodded thoughtfully. “It is something special. No one would have accepted Brick into the Clan without you.”
“Or let RiverClan stay at Sunningrocks,” Greystripe agreed. “Or saved a random ShadowClan warrior from being killed by the dog.”
Ravenwing’s eyes creased fondly. “Or backed Lionface down from chasing off elders.”
Firestar shuffled his feet, a little bashful. “That one was so long ago, when I was an apprentice…”
“Which I think speaks even louder about you.” Greystripe nudged him with his nose. “And now you’re more concerned with how you could have hurt someone else you’ve never met than how you almost died by a gang-leader’s teeth. Tell me anyone else who would think that.”
Firestar had to concede to that by limply rolling a shoulder.
“Exactly.” Greystripe nodded with satisfaction. “Look, I don’t mean to say it’s good that you’ve had nightmares about it. My point is that it means something important. Try to look at it like that, y’know? Like it’s…”
He paused, frowning, like he couldn’t decide exactly what to say.
“Like it means you just have all the more reason to care?” Ravenwing suggested.
“That, yeah.” Greystripe gave him a grateful blink.
Firestar looked up at Greystripe, confused. “Why would I stop caring in the first place? It seems like half the time, no one else is going to-“
Ravenwing purred. “There you go.”
Greystripe beamed at Firestar, looking very proud of himself. Firestar just twitched his whiskers and looked down again.
“It’s still not pleasant,” he said after a moment. “But I guess I see what you mean.”
“Good.” Greystripe gave him a gentle shove with his paw. “So can we dry your face on something and get you home? You didn’t even eat this evening, don’t think we didn’t notice.”
Firestar sighed good-humoredly. “I suppose so.”
The trio stood together as Firestar scraped his brow with his dry paw. Greystripe offered a few licks to smooth it down, but eventually they conceded that it was going to have to dry on its own. They trotted off for camp, tails high.
“I wish I could do something to help Brick, is all,” Firestar said as they went. “I know I can’t, and it makes me worry.”
“They’re going to have to figure this out themselves,” Ravenwing replied gently. “I hate to say it, but you have to accept that they’re on their own. You’ve offered advice to Brick, and that’s all you can do.”
“I know…” Firestar started, then sighed. “I know.”
Conversation was light after that, but, oddly, so was Firestar’s chest.
“I want to write a fic about this but I don’t think anybody will be interested in it” ummm hello excuse me ma’am what do you mean you don’t think anybody will be interested in it??? YOU. YOU ARE INTERESTED IN IT???? write it because YOU are interested in it and YOU want to write about it. fanfic writing should always be first and foremost about YOUR enjoyment, not other people’s.

I wanted to use what ‘reach’ I may have here to share the Carolina Wildlife Center’s urgent plea for donations. If they are unable to raise $75,000 to cover ongoing and future care of their wildlife patients, the center will have to close July 20th, 2026. The services provided by CWC to the community are incredibly valuable, and without them, many wild animals will suffer without the care they need.
Thinking about the "mentor apprentice swap au" and I think a fun way to approach it would be to have Tigerpaw/claw still be the one doing most of the assassinations... but it's for Ravencall's sake.
I've always pictured Warrior!Ravenpaw as being something of a Cloak and Dagger type, preferring stealth and subterfuge over direct confrontation, as a result of needing to survive Tigerclaw (or in this au's case, Thistleclaw).
So while publicly, Tigerpaw is annoyed by his mentor's seemingly pacifistic approach, in private where Ravencall's true methods come to light, he actually respects the hell out of his mentor and his willingness to get his paws dirty and skirt around that pesky Code for the greater good to the Clan. In fact, in Tigerpaw's eyes, he's the only one worthy leading the Clan.
Needless to say, once Tigerclaw finally gets caught in the act, Ravencall is horrified at the monster he had a paw in creating.
Oh that would be fun, especially as I would imagine Ravencall's stealth and subterfuge was always genuinely about helping and avoiding conflict and genuine desire for pacifism, but if caught he'd panic and stammer out some excuse to make it seem like he's getting something out of it that Tigerpaw would just take as face value and teach him about lying and stuff while Ravencall is just trying to pass down actual conflict resolution stuff.
This is kinda how I'm picturing Redtails death going down in this theoretical AU
Tigerpaw and Ravencall are at the fight where Ravencall agrees with the retreat but before he runs tries to find Tigerpaw to ensure he gets out as he was too excited and he doesn't want him to be left behind only to see tigerpaw call out to Redtail for help because he got "stuck under a rock" by the water, and then suddenly shove Redtail into the water, where he drowns despite Ravencall rushing to try and get him out.
Ravencall freaks the fuck out and for the sake of his sanity doubles down on this idea that Redtail fell into the water and was not pushed. As he carries his body to camp and looks away guiltily as Tigerpaw talks about how during the retreat Redtail was suddenly shoved into the water by a Riverclan warrior and while Ravencall fought them off it was too late for Redtail who drowned. While Ravencall can't bring himself to actively accuse his own apprentice, of MURDER and forces himself to believe the story, it still heavily changes how he treats Tigerpaw in a lot of ways, and causing him to start isolating Tigerpaw from other apprentices for the safety of the other apprentices.
Just doing a lot of red herring behavior around how he treats Tigerpaw that catches the attention of Lionpaw and Firepaw who are worried about Tigerpaw, Firepaw just in general even though Tigerpaw is a big jerk to him, and Lionpaw because he knows Tigerpaw and he's acting really weird to a concerning degree. Especially as Tigerpaw's story of what exactly happened when Redtail died keeps shifting around because he like 8 moons old and not exactly a master manipulator yet.
Ravencall is having a bad day.
If you want to add onto the angst even more or have Ravencall be ignorant to the murder while still having a witness you can swap Sandpaw and Whitestorm and have Whitepaw instead witness the murder and cover up and be very torn up about it because that's his friend but also there needs to be justice (or depending on the canon you use, that was his fucking dad) especially since Tigerpaw knows he saw and he's getting concerned with how intense Tigerpaw is acting towards him
Really you can go like a million different directions with this, which is why I'm surprised there haven't really been any big mentor apprentice swap aus
Honestly? I think Warriors' main problem is currently that there are too many characters who are just... There. And do nothing except fill up the background and get picked out of a hat to shout things in scenes where the Important Characters are doing something. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, mind, but it does make it pretty obvious that important things (such as family and exact personalities) aren't tracked at all.
I can deal with characters that exist in the background and have a couple lines. There are approximately 50 cats in ThunderClan alone right now, they can't all be main characters. But when every single character who isn't a POV or love interest or antagonist is such a nothingburger that you can't even guess how they would react to any particular situation, or they don't show up at all in a book...it's a little ridiculous.

I think it'd be fun if one of these days when the evil overlord type is like "I Need A Queen. To Rule With" one of the little henchmen is just like "um 😳 if I may, sir, I would like to volunteer 👉👈" and overlord is just like. Okay sure you're cute aha
Or they could both be girls who knows. This trope is usually done with the Evil Man who proceeds to kidnap someone about it but we could have an overlady why not. Girlboss
Evil Overlady reading outdated Evil Overlord Instruction Manual from the Sexist Old Days: hmm, says here I need to acquire an Evil Queen to assist me in my Rule of Terror and General Administrative Duties. I must follow what the Manual says
Henchwoman who has been wearing increasingly risqué bustiers every passing day of her employment: umm. ma’am. 😳 I would like to apply for that position 👉👈
Evil Overlady: Excellent! This is why I hired you, because you are a Real Go-Getter
