SUBJECT ✴︎ MATTER / content & shipping caution
as a multishipper who can see the appeal of different character dynamics, i don't ingest media expecting characters to act perfectly, or for idealized romance, etc. etc. —
>> i just think writers as creators and readers as an audience need to be honest about the subject matter of stories.
(an example : ACOTAR is not a feminist story with ideal main pairings. people, please educate yourself on actual feminist philosophy,
[and also why sarah j. maas is a problematic author.])

Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher
🌝🌕🌕🌕🌚
Istvhan is a former paladin on a mission to track down a duo of supernatural killers. Clara is a lay sister from a convent trying to find and save her abducted fellow sisters. The two are thrown together by local customs, and travel to a harsh city to fulfill their goals. Believing love is not for them, they keep their secrets at first, but come to bare everything to each other. As always with the author, characters are endearing and easy to root for. Of the books I've read, I'd say this is UV's most fleshed out relationship — but I do have a few more books to read in the Paladin series.
Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente
🌝🌕🌕🌕🌚
A reimagining of the Slavic fairy tale of Koschei the Deathless and Marya Morevna. Set during the first half of the 20th century, folklore and modernity meld in a story of resilience. It was an enthralling read for me; I love stories about the meeting of the old ways and the new, and the writing is so good. I'll have to add more of the author's works to my TBR.
The Unexpected Miss Bennet by Patrice Sarath
🌝🌕🌑🌑🌚
This one was a quick read. It had a great characterization of Mary Bennet, that is true to P&P while growing Mary as a protagonist. Anne de Bourgh getting some page time was a highlight. Mary's journey of self is brought down by a lackluster love interest, though. He wasn't very fleshed out, and there's no chemistry between him and Mary. Writing this, I can't even remember his name. Also, for a book that's supposed to be about Mary, there isn't enough page space dedicated to her POV; way too many sections are from her older sisters' POV.
A Match For Mary Bennet by Eucharista Ward O.S.F
🌝🌕🌕🌑🌚
This has the truest characterization of Mary in the three Mary Bennet books I've read. If you're looking for something close to Austen canon, this is the one I'd recommend. Mary's love interest, a clergyman named Mr. Oliver, is a perfect match for her. He's someone she never considers for herself, only for her sister Kitty, and who she grows from knowing and speaking to over the course of the book. There are satisfying sisterhood arcs with Mary and Kitty, and especially between Mary and Lydia. Anne de Bourgh gets a satisfying little wrap up, too. My only complaint: with so many characters often on page at one time, it's easy to lose focus and have to reread sections.
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
🌝🌕🌕🌕🌚
Elisabeth Scrivener is the youngest trainee to become a warden in a grand library, to watch over magical grimoires that can transform into horrors. One night, everything she is working towards is taken away, when she is accused of a crime she didn't commit. She suspects the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn to be the culprit—the very person whose custody she is in while being transported for her trial. I really liked this one! The worldbuilding and plot are engaging, and the protagonist and her LI's relationship has a satisfying progression, as does the character Silas' arc. This author is becoming one of my favorites.
Mysteries of Thorn Manor by Margaret Rogerson
🌝🌕🌕🌑🌚
Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas can't have a moments peace. After the events of SoT, something is wrong with the wards of Thorn Manor, and its magic is out of control. Can they figure out the source of the problem and fix it before their big ball? This was a cute one.

"Why must my voice be smooth? Why must I sing so low?"- Literally Claudia being forced to perform Baby Don't Like Windows. She was lowest in the hierarchy on Theatre de Vampire and must keep her opinions to herself.
"And why is she kept, why must she be kept?"- Claudia being kept in the floorboards by Bruce. Claudia being kept in Loustat's marriage despite knowing Louis and Lestat would forever pick each other over her and presence is unnecessary for their love. Why must she stay in this house when she is seen as unwanted by one, second-place to the other, forever unheard?
"And what does it mean if you are not asked? And what does it mean if you are not answered?"- Claudia's beginnings are about her lack of agency in becoming a vampire. Ever since, Loustat raised her without checking on her boundaries, her opinions on what the household should be. Lestat kept dodging all her questions about vampirism and eliciting answers by herself also grew very difficult because, well, no one respected enough to answer her.
"And what is it to see but to be told you have not seen?"- Claudia going all around the world, around America in her quest for answers about vampirism and for herself, only to have her efforts be dismissed by Lestat who reduced it to a joke about "going to college and returning to do laundry". He constantly undermined her insight and experience.
"And why is her death prolonged?"- The trial, the ordeal of vampirism where Louis even says he saved her from a fire only to watch her burn decades later.
"And when will it stop? And who will stop it?"- Claudia begging Lestat to save her, for Louis to let her go.
I will die on the hill that over time Lestat saw Akasha in Claudia.
WHY MUST SHE BE KEPT? AND WHY IN THIS PLACE SHE MUST BE KEPT? AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF YOU ARE NOT ASKED? AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF YOU ARE NOT ANSWERED? AND WHAT IS IT TO SEE AND TO KNOW, BUT TO BE TOLD YOU HAVE NOT SEEN. YOU HAVE NOT KNOWN. AND WHY IS HER TONGUE CUT OUT? AND WHY IS HER DEATH PROLONGED AND WHEN WILL IT STOP AND WHO WILL STOP IT? AND WHY MUST THEY, MUST WE, MUST I, MUST HE, MUST THEY, AS THE MILLENNIA, UNFOLD? WHY THE GIRL CURLED? WHY HER EYES LOWERED? WHY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD? WHY LIMP IN THE STRAW? I AM THE GIRL! I AM THE GOD! I AM THE VOICE! I AM THE SONG! I AM THE NIGHT AND I CAN ANSWER! I CAN ARRANGE IT! I CAN SAY RISE, AND I CAN SPEAK! AND I AM HER! AND I AM SHE! AND I, I, I, I AM THE ANSWER!

this and also the only difference between fanfic writers and writers who sell their own original works as careers is that fanfics aren’t monetized. that’s all.
being a “professional” writer doesn’t mean your works are inherently better than fanfics. I’ve read so many fics that are more professionally written than some published books.
whether or not a piece of writing is monetized has nothing to do with its quality.

as a regular donor to Gaza Soup Kitchen I get their email updates, and they said today that while they've continued to be able to expand, donations are slowing down as Gaza gets less coverage. If you have a few dollars to spare, I encourage you to send them here to continue the amazing work that Hani and his team are doing.
