so the thing about gothic horror making you uncomfortable for a reason is that there has to Be a reason beyond just discomfort. it’s meant to make you consider why things repulse you, why some things repulse you and others don’t, and how much of your instinctual gut reaction of disgust has been societally encouraged. the point is not ‘lol that sucked to watch and made me cringe.’ the point is not ‘lol monsters are gonna be monsters.’
and like any other type of plot device, incest and rape in gothic horror still need to serve the larger narrative on top of the meta themes of the genre. and that’s not what we got from tvl. decrying fans who correctly point out that the torture porn this season was uncomfortable for no reason and led to nothing and was also racist by saying ‘it’s gothic horror!!! it’s meant to be uncomfortable!!!’ is not in any way engaging with critique in good faith. making you uncomfortable cannot be the end all be all and doesn’t make good gothic horror, there has to actually be Substance. painting all critics of this season as woobs who just can’t handle real dark media is so fucking stupid. this was a poorly written, poorly directed, poorly produced, phenomenally acted season of television, and it being ‘gothic horror’ is not a get out of jail card for criticism. i love gothic horror. my taste in everything skews extremely dark, partially because i read the books as a teenager and fell in love with the genre, and i hate this season very very much on its own (lack of) merits. not because seeing violence on screen makes me uncomfortable. get fucking real
