A bread is one of the most vulnerable animals on earth of all time. It can die in a number of different ways, which include being smashed, being old, being rottened, being crumpled up, getting too hot, having water put on it, and having water not on it but being in the air a lot (the water (mist)). The breadās favorite way to die is being eaten, but the world is a complicated place, and it does not care for what the bread wants, and so it dies in a variety of ways which are not the preference of the bread.
Humans are considered the breadās natural predator, and also, are the breadās mommy (make/give birth to the bread). Humans are a large species of ant or plant or ele phant with two grasping appendages which they use to give birth to the bread. They also have one hole which eats the bread, and some other holes, which the bread is not allowed near, generally.
Some bread can go in the fridge. Some bread has fruit in it. Scientists donāt know why, as putting fruit in the bread is considered yucky, and scientists have difficulty imagining an organism that likes yucky things.
There is the anteater, which is an organism that likes yucky things, but scientists do not need to imagine it, because it is real.
It's always sooooo funny when English people or Americans are like "Why are Irish names so hard to pronounce?? Why are these Welsh words so insane???" that's because it is a different language that you do not speak hope this helps ā¤ļø

As an art major, while I know Fountain is a valid piece of art that accomplished exactly what it set out to do, I also think itās one of the stupidest things. We have a urinal in a museum display. I have yet to see a work I think is dumber.
The thing I love most about Duchamps urinal piece is that it was so ālow costā in terms of creative labour (compared to say, a large scale oil painting or sculpture for example), but itās absolutely FULL of rage against the traditionalists and the world at that time and itās SUCH a statement, itās like, āoh just a mass manufactured item with a signatureā but the reality of it is so many layers of meaning and without understanding the history at the time you donāt get it.
Itās an incredibly clever āfuck youā and I love it
An old professor of mine, an expert in Duchamp who has written several books, has a theory. In part, āFountainā was a prank, a personal āfuck youā to the organization looking for artworks. Itās importance cannot be overstated, and this importance stems from the fact that āFountainā is /ridiculous/. It is enraging, it is hilarious, and it is very fascinating.
Aside from Duchampās readymades, I love āBride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors Evenā. Pictured below, the work invokes a complex machine, one my professor spent a great deal of time studying. Eventually, he reached his conclusion. My professor had been pranked. He believes āBride Stripped Bareā is a joke about masturbation, hidden to all except those study it excessively.
At first blush, Duchampās works are stupid. Upon further study, theyāre very complex. And, upon true understanding, Duchamp is laughing at you. To me, it seems the closer you come to truly understanding Duchamp, the more he slaps you in the face with a large fish.
Let me rage about ātraditionalism revivalā here. This is a dogwhistle.
As a lover of art, there are many complex and technically impressive works being created today, which both embrace different artistic traditions and break from them. To ignore those is to ignore contemporary art.
Here, OP is raging against conceptual art, which stimulates thought and challenges tradition. He wants his followers to believe that art has ādegeneratedā, because the West has ādegeneratedā. OP is intentionally engaging with fascist ideas of ādegenerate artā.
If OP wanted to be accurate, he would seek to restore the Salon System, the Beaux Arts Academy, and classical training in the arts. The collapse of this specific system allowed for Modernism to evolve. Of course, thatās not what OP is talking about. Heās evoking beauty as a moral standard, telling his followers to ārestore Western traditionā, to fight against aesthetic ādegeneracyā in culture.
(By the way, Duchamp is commenting ON MODERNISM with āFountainā. Duchamp submitted the work to the Society of Independent Artistsā salon in New York, who would accept any work by any artist, for a small fee. In part, Duchamp is saying, āIs this what you Modernists want? A urinal? Look me in the eyes and prove this is not art.ā
If OP dared to use his brain, perhaps he would agree with Duchamp here.)
The thing is that it isnāt even a urinal! It doesnāt match any model manufactured at the time. Also Duchamp was an accomplished ceramicist. Itās likely that he made the sculpture and absolutely everyone is like āI know what a urinal looks like. This is sufficiently urinal-shaped for me to assume it is one without looking at it closely!ā
Duchamp had other readymades, like his snow shovel, where if you actually look at the photos, the handle is square and the bowl is way too flimsy. Why would manufacturers make a snow shovel with a squared-off handle? Itās impossible to hold! Duchamp slapped the āreadymadesā label on all these items and the hoity-toity art people who were so good at looking at things didnāt see it (probably because theyād never had to do labor like shovel snow imo, amongst other things).
Marcel Duchamp. In Advance of the Broken Arm. Museum of Modern Art. (4th Version [Ed.!!!] after lost original of November 1915)
wait what. there⦠what?!?! IT ISNāT AN ACTUAL URINAL?!? or might not be anyway. what the fuck.
if the dude seriously did that, his troll game is out of everyoneās league except Leader Kibo.
My favorite thing about Fountain (besides the fact it has been pissing off fascists for over a century, natch) is that the original was lost and he made a bunch of official editions to sell to various museums (after the original was lost, possibly on purpose).
And theyāre different! If it was a real āreadymadeā he could have just bought some more at his local hardware store, but no. He changed them in OBVIOUS WAYS.
See the triangle of holes?
Hereās the one from the Tate Modern:
Oh hello, cross-holes. Fancy seeing you here.
SFMOMAās edition has the triangle holes, but it also has a line of holes at the top that are completely different from either other version.
Hereās one from Moderna Museet. Line and a circular set of holes!
Duchamp definitely intentionally made these different on purpose. Itās a āreadymadeā but itās not, really, each of these is a specific custom creation.
Itās not even clear if he made it! He wrote a letter to his sister claiming that a female friend sent it to him, and he just enrolled it in the art exhibit under his own name. Thereās also a possibility that that female friend was himself, since he later had a female pseudonym of Rrose SĆ©lav.
This whole piece of art is a fractal troll, and itās a beautiful one.
art is a creative statement.
sometimes that statement is āgo fuck yourselfā

Thereās a bunch of right-wing people posting memes about āāDOGEāā making the government more efficient by removing funding from āādumb bug researchersāā and I am now realizing how little the average person knows about entomology and its importance
Excuse me while I get sad .
There is a community note correcting this post about the importance of researching insects - including the reproductive habits of insects. But still the fact this was posted and 2k people liked it makes me sad š„²š„²
"stupid researchers studying the mating habits of beetles" people when they can't afford groceries because an invasive beetle species is decimating crops
An actual conversation I had with a colleague.
Colleague: so they were using the wrong species to pollinate their crops.
Me: what do you mean?
Colleague: well they were using a fly species from Canada and theyāre growing onions in Texas. The fly they were using was dying in a day in their greenhouses because itās frigging Texas in May/June.
Me: and no one was studying this or telling them otherwise?
Colleague: not till me.
Me: so they were wasting all that money on an inefficient pollinator and losing out on crop yield.
Colleague: yepā¦
And yet these idiots want to cut entomological research funding. Yeah, good luck with that. Come back to us when thereās huge outbreaks of pest insects and arbovectors that we were studying but yāall decided it was ātoo stupidā to fund.
if you have the words WOOL SOCKS on your label and then the percentage of wool is 3% and plastic material is 97% I should be able to hunt you for sport
In case you arenāt familiar, Michael Scott Moore and David Rohde are both journalists. Moore was held by Somali pirates for 977 days. Rohde was held captive by the Taliban for 7 months after being abducted in Afghanistan.
thats the thing thats missing from america-centric discussion of fascism: this shit is global. every country in āthe westā is seeing the same rise of fascism in real time, all of it focused on murdering migrants. like giorgia meloni is campaigning to deport people to āmigrant campsā in albania. last year the greek coast guard outright drowned a boat of 500 asylum seekers. and as that last post said im not dismissing the suffering of people within the US, iām just saying its so supremely frustrating that every conversation is about the minutiae of american domestic policy and not the horrifying ultranationalist global trend scapegoating arabs and africans.
my point is you need to be horrified that āborder controlā is an accepted talking point. you need to be aware of the fact that climate change is currently driving what will become the largest forced movement of people ever as the āthird worldā becomes uninhabitable. peopleāspecifically people from africa and west asiaāare dying in the name of white supremacist ābordersā around the world. and whether your european or american when you see this rhetoric manifest in your country you need to push back.
Brennan Lee Mulligan arguing for the primal nature of morality on Ep. 40ās Fireside Chat is one of the funniest and realest things Iāve ever heard. He once again put into words what I have been trying to say for what feels like forever.
EDIT: No, I actually need to quote this out for myself.
āOne of the things that happens a lot in philisophy that is, I think, a point of failure, potentially, in it, is that philosophy contains a lot of formal logic studies, and thereās a degree to want to sort of explicate, logically, everything, and go like, āWhat are the reasons and rationalities behind all of this?ā But I think ignoring the primal origins of morality- You donāt need- If you watch someone kick a small animal, you donāt need an explanation for why thatās bad. Itās a first- Itās a primary thing, right? And you get into weird positions when youāre like, āI believe that humans should have good- be flourish and be happy, and have safety and joy!ā And someone can literally just go āWhy? To what end? To what end should they have joy?ā And youāre like āNot to what end. Iām saying this is the end for me. The end for me is joy and safety and peace.ā And I get to say that because Iām a weird brain monster living in the universe and I can create meaning with my mind. Youāre doing the same thing right now, but I just choose joy. Are you choosing something else? Because if you are, then weāre in conflict!ā -Brennan Lee Mulligan, āFireside Chat for WWW ep40 āAid and Comfortāā
Choose joy, motherfucker! If youāre not, weāre in conflict!!!
