Armor Wars/Iron Man Marvel DnD
Class (Subclass): Fighter (Scout UA) OR Cavalier (ignoring mounted unless you're doing an AU fantasy setting))
- Interception fighting style.
Background: House Agent (customised)
You have sworn fealty to Stark Industries. If you have a name badge, you're likely an employee of Stark Industries; otherwise you're a contractor who hopes to take Tony for a ride and make a fortune, well…not on your watch. Your main task is to serve as the eyes of Stark Industries, but you could be called on at any time to act as its hand. Such missions can be perilous but lucrative.
Stark Industries One gaming set and vehicles
Personality: I'm enthusiastic about everything Stark Industries does
Ideal: Common Good. Stark Industries serves a vital function, and its prosperity will help everyone. (Good)
Bond:I don't care that much about the company as a whole, but I would do anything for Tony
Flaw:I'm fixated on following official protocols
Class (Subclass):Barbarian (Path of the Giant)
OR Barbarian (Path of the Warforged HB (needs some balancing))
- Both straight STR, CON builds, bash away! Maybe 2 Warhammers reflavoured as fists like with the Hulks.
OR Artificer (Mastermaker Specialist)
- Tony would be a very busy man with this build as this would be Happy benefitting from his inventions the same as Rhodey, also this build needs INT, but no need for a weapon after level 3 as you get your Battlefist.
Race: Custom Warforged Juggernaut UA OR regular Custom Warforged (you are inside of the suit, it feeds you nutrients and you can sleep inside it during a rest but the suit stays alert)
Background: House Agent (as above)
Class (Subclass): Barbarian (Path of the Giant)
- If Happy is switching between Head of Security and The Freak.
OR Barbarian (Path of the Berserker)
- If you are The Freak Full time.
- Consider 2 Warhammers reflavoured as fists here too.
Background: House Agent (as above)
Class (Subclass): Artificer (Armorer)
Race: Variant Human or Custom Warforged Envoy or Skirmisher UA OR regular Custom Warforged (you are inside of the suit, it feeds you nutrients and you can sleep inside it during a rest but the suit stays alert)
Background: Guild Artisan
Personality: I’m full of witty aphorisms and have a proverb for every occasion
Ideal: Generosity. My talents were given to me so that I could use them to benefit the world. (Good)
Bond: The workshop where I learned my trade is the most important place in the world to me
Flaw: I’m never satisfied with what I have – I always want more.
Iron Heart (Riri Williams) -
Class (Subclass): Artificer (Battlesmith) OR (Rocketeer HB)
- A Steel Defender (an old power armor equipped with AI) OR flying from lvl 3!
- Between Riri and Tony we should have some spare Infusions for team mates.
- Branding Smite looks like it works with an Unarmed Strike, but you'll need DM approval for firearms (laser pistol) for Conjure Barrage (or a *sigh* Crossbow, if we must).
- Arcane Jolt is also flavoursome (from lvl 9, improves at lvl 15).
- And the Steel Defender can be an old suit of Tony's that Riri is controlling through AI.
- By the time you get Banishing Smite (can RP that Dr Strange or Wong is helping you out) you'll have the Arcane Armor Infusion with force Blasting gauntlet weapons.
Race: Variant Human or Custom Warforged Skirmisher UA OR regular Custom Warforged (you are inside of the suit, it feeds you nutrients and you can sleep inside it during a rest but the suit stays alert)
Background: Quandrix Student
- Witch Bolt spell from Wizard list reflavoured as repulsor Blast? Magic Missile is another good option for lvl 1.
- Guidance (AI Assist) and Mage Hand (gauntlet detaches) cantrips.
- Guiding Bolt could be another repulsor attack.
Trinket: A model hypercube carved from green crystal, showcasing the fourth dimension
Personality: I believe I'm always the smartest person in the room. And I'll prove it, even if no one asks me to
Ideal: Knowledge. The path to power and self-improvement is through knowledge. (Neutral)
Bond: Everything I do is an attempt to impress someone I love (From Simic Scientist)? OR It is my duty to use my knowledge to protect others (adapted from Sage)
Flaw: I'll take any risk to earn recognition for my scientific brilliance (From Simic Scientist)? OR I am easily distracted by the promise of information (from Sage)?
Class (Subclass):Paladin (Oath of Protection)
- Lvl 1 Lay on Hands is perfect for the healer/protector hybrid build I'm going for.
- Lvl 2 Fighting style; good options to choose from (2 only) for the Blessed Warrior fighting style (Guidance (AI assisst), Resistance (also AI assist), Sacred Flame (repulsor blast), Spare the Dying (integrated medikit), Word of Radiance (repulsor AoE)).
- Lvl 2 brings spells online, I'm imagining that Pepper's suit is designed for healing, but there's also a good selection of smites (but you will need a melee weapon for most of those, warhammer reflavored as suit gauntlet? Or these gauntlets (keeps a hand free for spellcasting)? At least until someone can give you Arcane Propulsion Armor).
- There is an argument for taking 1 level of Storm Sorcerer as that gets you 10ft of flight before or after casting a 1st lvl spell as well as FOUR cantrips and access to Magic Missile.
- A 1 level Warlock dip for Hexblade gives you Hexblade's Curse (targeting system) and lets you use CHA for your weapon strikes.
- Also, Eldritch Blast for repulsors!
- 2 levels gets you Invocations (Agonizing Blast and Repelling blast).
- 2 from Guidance, Resistance, Sacred Flame, Spare the Dying, Word of Radiance
- Blade Ward, Booming Blade, Message, Thunderclap
Sorcerer 1st level spells:
- Eldritch Blast, Sword Burst
Warlock 1st level spells:
- Armor of Agathys, Comprehend Languages
- Start Paladin first, Warcaster feat?
Race: Custom Warforged Skirmisher UA OR regular Custom Warforged (you are inside of the suit, it feeds you nutrients and you can sleep inside it during a rest but the suit stays alert)
Background:Guild CEO (from Guild Merchant)
Personality:I don't part with my money easily and will haggle tirelessly to get the best deal possible (Guild merchant)
Ideal:Respect. Respect is due to me because of my position, but all people regardless of station deserve to be treated with dignity. (Good) (from Noble)
Bond: I protect those who cannot protect themselves (from Folk Hero)
Flaw: I have trouble keeping my true feelings hidden. My sharp tongue lands me in trouble (from Entertainer)
Class (Subclass): Artificer (Archivist Specialist UA)
- I like the idea of Vision trying to reboot his systems, including his own Artificial Mind.
- It's not a bad fit thematically, being like a walking archive (extra proficiencies, Comprehend Languages etc) but it doesn't suit his full power set.
- It is INT based but there's not a lot of blasting going on, also Archivist is Unearthed Arcana so your DM may say no, also Vis is not an Artificer and we already have 2! Possibly more!
- Artillerist is a good alternative as it gives you force damage blasting from your Eldritch cannon (can RP it's coming from the mind stone) but again, not an Artificer.
OR Sorcerer (Aether Heart Origin HB) 14/Warlock (Aetheric Patron HB) 6
- Lots of good force blasting going on (including Eldritch Blast) but CHA based (not good for RP, Vis is still learning about being a person), also Homebrew which DM may not allow.
- An alternative could be Divine Soul Sorcerer (gives flight at level 14) and Celestial Patron Warlock and RP that Vis can choose between Force (Eldritch Blast) and Radiant damage (any number of Cleric spells available through Divine Sorcerer and Celestial Warlock).
OR Wizard (School of Evocation)
- Powerful INT based blasting
- Thematically this seems like a good fit, lots of Vis like powers (including telekinesis and limited flight!) you just need a blaster, perhaps ask DM for firearms rules and a laser pistol/rifle, a set of Arcane Armor might be nice too!
Race: Warforged or Glitchling UA (thematic features for Vis, also comes with per turn flight, if not getting from class)
OR Mystic (Order of the Awakened) UA
- Lots of good Psionic Talents for Vis, Energy Beam (lightning blast), Light Step which lets you alter your density +10ft speed, Mystic Hand (Mage Hand) and Psychic Hammer (force damage + pull or push 10ft).
- Order of the Awakened has extra skills, Sherlock Holmes style investigation ability that fits with Vision's encyclopedic knowledge and a Spectral Form ability where you can move through objects.
- Awakened Disciplines; Aura Sight and Precognition also fit with Vision's vast knowledge and mathematical mind.
Immortal Disciplines; Adaptive Body, Brute Force, Celerity, Iron Durability are his Construct nature
Wu Jen Disciplines; Mastery of Air for flying stuff and Misty Form for phasing (physical damage resistance and move through tiny spaces), Everything from Mastery of Force
- HP recovery and Telepathy at level 2, ASIs at 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th and 19th levels, change saving throws 1ce per rest from 4th level, resistance to physical damage, immunity to poison and disease and death save at level 20.
Feature: Fascinating Design
You win people over with your Human disguise. When you drop the illusion most find you fascinating, but the rich and powerful want to own you
Personality: My intelligence is far beyond any of these humanoids
Ideal: Transformation. I want to become more human (any)
Bond: My mind was based off of my creator's...and his AI assistant's
Flaw: I can’t feel pain, but I’m not impervious to damage
Class (Subclass): Inventor (Warsmith)HB
Clearly first choice as this is Marvel power armour essentially, you just have to RP that Rhodey is benefitting from Tony's inventions, this build needs INT.
OR Fighter (Rocketeer Archetype)HB
Free flying! (from lvl 3)
OR Fighter (Sharpshooter Archetype)UA
OR Fighter (Arcane Archer Archetype)
OR Fighter (Gunslinger) HB
- Need flight from somewhere for these. Winged Boots?
OR Ranger (Hunter Conclave) 13/Fighter (Sharpshooter UA OR Battlemaster) 7
- Then Hunter Ranger features Horde Breaker (3rd), Escape the Horde (7th), Volley (11th) + good spells to emulate repulsors or minigun or armour (spread out among the spell levels (Hail of Thorns, Zephyr Strike lvl 1, Cordon of Arrows lvl 2, Ashardlon's Stride, Conjure Barrage, Flame Arrows, Lightning Arrow lvl 3, Stoneskin lvl 4, Conjure Volley, Freedom Of the Winds HB, Steel Wind Strike, Swift Quiver)) you get Jump too which, if you squint, is a bit like flying.
- You will also need wisdom for this build though.
- Archery Fighting style (as long as DM approves this for firearms, crossbows if we must), repeating shot from Tony.
- All builds require Magic Initiate for Eldritch Blast, (unless Firearms are allowed, pistol + laser pistol), even Gunslinger has no lasers, Warsmith Inventor is the exception.
- You also need Winged Boots or Tony to help you out with Jump and Levitate spells to simulate flight and eventually Fly or Winged Boots to actually fly (unless DM allows Rocketeer Fighter HB).
Race: Custom Warforged Skirmisher UA OR regular Custom Warforged (you are inside of the suit, it feeds you nutrients and you can sleep inside it during a rest but the suit stays alert)
Personality Trait: I'm full of inspiring and cautionary tales from my military experience relevant to almost every combat situation.
Ideal: Responsibility. I do what I must and obey just authority. (Lawful)
Bond: Those who fight beside me are those worth dying for
Flaw: I would run through fire for a friend, and often get burned because of it (custom, mine)
Feat: Magic Initiate (Warlock) for Eldritch Blast (Repulsors), True Strike (HUD targeting) and Armor of Agathys (might get you out of a tight spot at early levels)? Not needed if firearms are allowed as you can have a regular pistol and a laser pistol
Gunner for DEX +1, Firearms proficiency, ignore reloading requirements and close range shooting penalty
Class (Subclass): Bard (College of Eloquence)
Scam: I put on new identities like clothes
Personality: I have a joke for every occasion, especially occasions where humor is inappropriate
Ideal: Aspiration. I'm determined to make something of myself. (Any)
Bond: I fleeced the wrong person and must work to ensure that this individual never crosses paths with me or those I care about
Flaw: I'm always in debt. I spend my ill-gotten gains on decadent luxuries faster than I bring them in
Class (Subclass): Artificer (Artillerist Specialist)
- Firearms rules would be good for this build.
Class (Subclass): Inventor (Warsmith)
- Firearms rules would also be good for this build.
Race: Human Sidekick Expert with Warforged suit pilot/H.A.M.M.E.R. goon
(Custom Warforged Skirmisher UA OR regular Custom Warforged (you are inside of the suit, it feeds you nutrients and you can sleep inside it during a rest but the suit stays alert))
Background: Izzet Engineer with a sprinkle of Failed Merchant
Personality: I pepper my speech with the incomprehensible jargon of my trade
Ideal: Redemption. Too many people consider me a failure. So I need to prove them wrong. (Any)
Bond: I owe a dangerous person a lot of money. As long as they're happy, they let my debt rest unpaid
Flaw: I failed, but I'm awesome. So when anyone else is successful, it must be because of nepotism, dishonesty, or dumb luck
Class (Subclass): Barbarian (Path of Wild Magic)
- All the wild magic options can easily be reflavoured to be features of the suit and two Warhammer reflavoured as power suit punches.
1. A weaponised version of a magical life drain, like Agatha's (deals necrotic, gain temp hp)
2. Flight (bonus teleports)
3. Rockets (exploding flumph)
4. Repulsor blasts (weapon changes to force, thrown and returns to hand)
5. Repulsor blasts (auto force damage when attacked)
6. Temporarily increasing power to shields and instructing nearby allies to do the same (magical lights, AC+1 for you and nearby allies)
7. Stomp and damage the ground beneath you (flowers and vines make difficult terrain to 15ft)
8. Chest Blast (chest blast, radiant damage, causes blind)
Race: Custom Warforged Juggernaut UA OR regular Custom Warforged but really tall (you are inside of the suit, it feeds you nutrients and you can sleep inside it during a rest but the suit stays alert)
Background: Failed Merchant
Personality: To prosper, you have to be in control
Ideal: Wealth. With enough coin, I can buy comfort, power, knowledge, and even eternal life. Nothing will stand between me and money
Bond: If I take care of my possessions, they'll take care of me. People come and go, but a weapon or a wand is something you can always rely on
Flaw: You haven't heard of me? I'm sure that's because of your ignorance and low breeding
Class (Subclass): Artificer (Arsonist Specialist HB)
- Very flavoursome for Extremis Killian. If Homebrew not allowed you could go for Artillerist as they have a flamethrower option.
Background: A.I.M. scientist (from Simic Scientist)
Personality:I can't wait to see what I become next!
Ideal: Superiority. My vast intellect and strength are directed toward increasing my sway over others. (Evil)
Bond: I will get revenge on the shortsighted fool who killed my precious Extremis creations
Flaw: I have a tendency to take shortcuts in my research and any other tasks I have to complete
Simic contact: A former colleague has ventured into fields of research that are possibly immoral and almost certainly illegal
Non-Simic contact: I borrowed a lot of money from the Ten Rings syndicate to help finance my research.
Maya Hansen (Scientist Supreme) -
Class (Subclass): Inventor (Fleshsmith)
- Maya as a Sidekick Expert with an AIM goon as the victim/beneficiary of her Fleshsmithing
OR Artificer (Alchemist Specialist)
- If Homebrew is not allowed, a little underwhelming compared to Fleshsmith but still has some flavour with the potions (easy flight potions and speed potions etc, craft Potion of Fire Breath for Killian, Potion of Giant Strength for Obadiah etc,)
Background: Simic Scientist
Superia/Captain Marvel (in Dark Avengers) (Maya Hansen) -
Class (Subclass): Paladin (Oath of Conquest) X/¿Warlock (Hexblade Patron) X?
- Hexblade changes atk modifier to CHA, can be due to her inventing a suit to copy Captain Marvel's powers, also Eldritch Blast, possibly.
Race: Aasimar (Radiant Soul w invisible wings)
Background: Simic Scientist
Class (Subclass):Artificer (Armorer Specialist)
- Guardian with reskinned thunder gauntlets as whips, can you increase range for a power loss or something? Or just carry a whip, idk. Or Lightning Lure cantrip?
Race: Custom Warforged Skirmisher UA OR regular Custom Warforged (you are inside of the suit, it feeds you nutrients and you can sleep inside it during a rest but the suit stays alert)
Background: Wronged Technocrat (custom)
Personality:If you do me an injury, I will crush you, ruin your name, and salt your fields
Ideal:Retribution. The rich need to be shown what life and death are like in the gutters (Evil)
Bond:No one else should have to endure the hardships I've been through
OR Ruthless capitalists stole my father's invention, breaking his will. He died broken and penniless. Vengeance will be mine.
Flaw:I remember every insult I've received and nurse a silent resentment toward anyone who's ever wronged me
Subclass:Way of the Astral Self 18/2 Artificer
- Could just go Astral Monk and be done with it, pretend that the reach of your Astral Self is actually the rings.
- You do get ten darts as well though which you could reflavour as rings. Your race (V Human) will get you the Fighting Initiate feat for Thrown Weapon fighting style, so your Ten Rings are always ready to fire. Also a +2 damage bonus to the 'thrown' ring attack. Using a feat for this avoids having to take a 1 lvl dip in Fighter to get the style.
- If you speak to your DM and explain what you're going for they may let you use an action (or maybe even a bonus action) to recall your rings after you've used them. If so, sorted, go full Astral Monk and enjoy.
- If not, and you really want the real movie feel of the rings we go:
- A tool proficiency of you choice, this may come in handy later. Calligraphy might be plausible for someone as old as the Mandarin.
- You get STR/DEX saving throws and choose Acrobatics and Stealth (Athletics and Intimidation from background) as your skills.
- A quarterstaff as your simple weapon? If you got the returning rings you probably don't need it. Maybe you can offer your melee weapon as part of the returning rings bargain with the DM...
- An explorer's pack and your 10 darts (Ten Rings)
- Martial Arts : DEX instead of STR attacks, d4 for weapon or unarmed attacks, Unarmoured/unshielded AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Wisdom modifier, a bonus action unarmed strike after attacking.
- A 2nd lvl of Monk for...
- Ki: Ki points, 2 bonus action /unarmed strikes after attacking (1 ki), Dodge as a bonus action (1 ki), bonus Disengage or Dash and x2 jump distance for the turn (1ki), and +10ft walking speed boost.
- A solid martial arts build, now we go Artificer...wait, what? Yes that's right, desperate times and all that...you will not actually become an inventor but this gives us what we need for ring recall and a few nice spells.
- 1 lvl of Artificer gets you...
- Magical Tinkering to invest your Ten Rings with the proper hum so they sound mystical.
- Spellcasting! Again, if your DM is accommodating they might let you use your rings as a spellcasting focus. Otherwise you need tools. Remember that calligraphy set? It may get fiddly trying to hold a brush so do push for that switch for your focus. If not there are some ranged spells which can be reimagined as ring attacks.
- Unfortunately INT is your spellcasting ability, plead for DEX or even WIS!
- Thornwhip (30ft attack and the rings pull your enemy closer, try to switch piercing damage for force or bludgeoning).
- Mending (We will need to keep our returning ring infusion in good shape).
- Absorb Elements (I like this as the rings could both shield you and store energy for your next attack).
- Feather Fall (you rings can protect 5 people from falling damage!).
- 2nd lvl of Artificer gets you Infusions!
- You get 4 but we only want one...
- Returning Weapon (what we came for, no more running out of rings mid-fight yay! And a +1 damage bonus.
- Homunculus might work if you reflavoured it as the infused gem investing the rings for more power. This enhances the range and ability of your vision (Homunculus Darkvision sense), and your awareness (their perception sense) and the rings (the Homunculus really) can be commanded to do a ranged force attack when it isn't even your turn (which scaled up with your spellcasting modifier. Hope you switched it to DEX or WIS!).
Mind Sharpener might be useful if you take concentration spells
Replicate Magic Item would be very useful but is a bit limited at lvl 2 (nothing that works with Ten Rings style).
We go back to Monk now for Astral Self.
You now get spectral arms which can hold your rings so they look like they're floating in midair, you get a nice AoE attack when you activate it, which scales with your martial arts attack bonus. Also your unarmed strike reach increases by 5ft.
All the features here could be explained as the powers of the Ten Rings.
You may want to consider the Sharpshooter feat as your rings will lose their disadvantage for long range attacks and ignores ½ and ¾ cover. There is also a risky attack option that could add a +5 bonus to your attack damage which should stack with your Thrown Weapon Fighting style bonus (+2) and your Returning Weapon bonus (+1).
Feat: Fighting Initiate for the Thrown Weapon fighting style, Gunner means you can use your darts/rings at close range without disadvantage (or you could just punch them I guess)
Race:Variant Human w Fighting Initiate feat
Background:Warlord (mostly high rank Soldier background but the Military Rank feature has more of a Criminal Contact vibe instead)
Personality:I can stare down a hell hound without flinching
Ideal:Might. In life as in war, the stronger force wins. (Evil)
Flaw:I have little respect for anyone who is not a proven warrior
https://www.reddit.com/r/3d6/s/DqqgVg6CxS
The same as the Vision entry.
Class (Subclass): Artificer (Archivist Specialist UA)
Cons - no blasting OR good punching options, White Vision is not an Artificer.
OR Sorcerer (Aether Heart Origin HB) 14/Warlock (Aetheric Patron HB) 6
Pros - Lots of good force blasting going on (including Eldritch Blast).
Cons - CHA based (not good for RP, White Vision is less charismatic than the original Vision), also Homebrew which DM may not allow.
OR Divine Soul Sorcerer (gives flight at level 14) 14/Celestial Patron Warlock 6
Pros - Gives flight at level 14, Eldritch Blasting and access to Cleric spell list with lots of radiant damage blasts, not Homebrew or Unearthed Arcana.
OR Wizard (School of Evocation)
Pros - Powerful INT based blasting.
Cons - lots of other spells which are not thematic but you kind of need to take if you're a Wizard arry.
Pros - Thematically a good fit, lots of synthezoid like powers (including telekinesis and limited flight!) you just need a blaster.
Cons - you need a blaster! DM might not go for firearms rules and lasers...3 levels of Artillerist Artificer for the Force Ballista?
Race: Warforged or Glitchling UA -
Thematic features for synthezoids, also comes with per turn flight, if not getting from class.
Forget Artificer's Tools, just an Artisan's Tool proficiency will be fine, also where's the ASI?
You appear robotic and don’t blend into a crowd. Xenophobia against you is common among most races, but scientists and scholars find you fascinating and wish to study you
Personality: My intelligence is far beyond any of these creatures
Ideal: Servitude. I will complete my orders, regardless of the cost
Bond: I have an identical copy with whom I’m diametrically opposed
Flaw: I can’t feel pain, but I’m not impervious to damage
