Have I mentioned that I miss Date so fucking much? Because I do. Rei didn't (wouldn't) ask for this, but Date's doing it anyway. Rei deserves to have a friend who would stand up for him like this.
(And that's not to imply that Hiro or the others are bad friends for not doing this. Hiro has known Rei for fifteen-ish years at this point, and has watched how he handled things as a child, and has likely adapted to how Rei prefers to handle things as an adult - which is to ignore it. I'm sure that if it got bad enough, or if Rei reacted to it, Hiro would also stand up for him, but for now, he's taking cues from Rei. Hagi and Matsuda are in a different position because they barely know Rei and they don't have the same thing going on as Date, where he's in a romantic relationship with another half-Japanese person who likely also faces this discrimination.)
Going from Hagi teasing Date about being in love with "Furuya-chan" (and Rei's annoyed face kills me, meanwhile Hiro is shocked and blushing. What's that look for, Hiro?), to Date revealing he has a girlfriend and all of the guys being shocked by that revelation. I love these idiots so much.

I love that they even included Natalie here. It's a nice touch. Also Date's descriptions of the other guys is funny. I love that he calls Hiro quiet, and I guess he is, but it's because 1) he's going through some stuff; and 2) the other guys never shut up.
Hiro probably talks a normal amount otherwise, he just seems quiet by comparison.

Okay okay I want to talk about this. Because in this sparring match, we see Rei take note of Date's injured knee and not use that against him. He hesitates, he shows mercy, and it costs him the match. And Date scolds him for it. It's a moment of "weakness" on Rei's part, that Date takes advantage of.
And my mind immediately goes to M20: the ferris wheel fight. Specifically, when Conan calls Akai on the phone, and Akai loses focus for a split second, and Rei takes advantage of it to keep the fight going. Granted, this doesn't lose Akai their fight, but that's not the point.
In WPS, there's a sportsmanship aspect to Rei's actions, and by current canon timeline, it's not there anymore. And that makes sense - maybe he took Date's words to heart (Date's not entirely wrong, because a criminal likely wouldn't show the same mercy, even if he is a little... intense), or maybe it's unprocessed grief and his hatred of Akai informing his actions, maybe a combination of everything.
(Also thinking about Hiro's last moments, taking advantage of Akai's momentary distraction in order to the pull the trigger. Ow.)
I just think it's interesting.

(I doubt Gosho was really thinking about it this way, but, in a more fantastical sense, it makes it feel like fate brought them all together. Maybe that's something I want to explore later.)
This line makes me laugh. Most normal people do not, in fact, have more than one cell phone. It's unlikely to come up that often. And yet this guy thinks of it.
I've seen it mentioned before that Rei feels too perfect/"Gary Stu-ish" in WPS, and I have thoughts about that that I'll talk about once I get to the end of this series, because it's about the series as a whole, but I think this might be one of the things that ticks that box for some people. Rei picked up on this when Date didn't, Rei wants to not be impulsive and tries to hold Date back. Rei finds the solution to this situation.
But, to me, it makes sense for him, especially at this point in his life, and it makes sense for Date not to see things objectively here, too, given his (perceived) past with his dad. Rei is impulsive and emotional, yes, but he holds back when he knows it's important, and here he can see that things aren't quite what they seem. He's a detective, even if unofficially at this point; it's in his nature to notice these things. Whereas Date's past is coloring his choices here, he wants to act so that these guys can't hurt anyone.
The fact that Rei's immediate instinct is to get Date's shoelaces... You will never convince me that Hiro and Rei weren't absolute terrors as children/teens.
The way Rei just says this in front of all of the hostages. I know I mock Akai about his lack of tact, but this one is pretty egregious.
Rei using the switchboard to send coded messages on the chance his bff happens to pass by and see them. And, because they share a single brain cell, he's right.

Could it have been a piece of the beautiful, pale wing embedded among the countless eerie butterflies that were painted there.
the Nire's family member: Do you understand? I mean, if you examine the box that was passed around during the box-passing ritual and find no butterfly with a missing wing then that box is safe!!

In the real world, being or supporting a murderer-thief would be pretty damn awful, while in the game it's just good fun. Same with anything else you choose to do with the pixels on the screen, like kinks that don't affect anyone real, so they're okay in fiction, but would be pretty damn bad in real life.

Just putting wild thing out here that a Swiss CPS worker said or did in this country:

So, guys... just because people think Switzerland is a great country to live in, there's a lot of corruption here as well. CPS Workers are known here to have absolutely power over children. Police can't interfere either, as they told me.
And also, their reports are lies. Children have specifically said that they were questioned and threatened and the reports only said: "The child was very nice and friendly towards me and we talked a lot"

I remember when it was taboo simply to answer your cell phone in public. The person answering would apologize and try to go to a more private area. Then public calls were normalized. Then putting people on speaker. Then listening to music without headphones. Do you know how many times I have hiked up a mountain or driven to the beach, only to be met with someone blaring shitty top 40 music from their portable speaker, because Heaven forbid you go one hour without noise?
