for some reason it always confuses me for a hot minute when i hear that Akechi tried to kill Ren twice, because the engine room never felt like an honest attempt at that. perhaps bcs his sacrifice looms bigger in my mind so i keep forgetting there were like two semi boss fights before it. but also the fights didn't really feel like him trying to kill them, even if he turned himself psychotic and kept saying so. gameplay wise there's always a shift from downing someone in the cognitive world and actually killing them, like with the black mask flashbacks. so when he was like "Serves you right" after downing someone in the fight, it was more like him feeling satisfied winning against the ppl who's put a wrench in his plan. it's very much like him to go for an all-out fight trying to kill someone, but against the thieves and Ren especially, that he wasted literal turns just to glare at him, i think it felt more like his bout in Mementos with Ren, only with all masks down. like a duel that ideally stops at him fending them off so he can take down Shido himself.
blame my Akechi brain but when i played the game i immediately zoomed in on what the SIU director said to Shido about the plan against the thieves: he said it was not the kind of plan Akechi would come up with, and they confirmed that it was bcs Shido was there to influence him, just like how he was "taught" to use his power the "right" way. Akechi being manipulated but still telling himself that he had agency all along, that he was the one using Shido when his father practically coerced him into coming up with a cruel plan to kill the only person he ever wants to befriend. and Akechi is very good at tricking others and himself - like in Ren's palace he once said that he's done it for so long it's second nature. i think he might tell himself and the thieves that he'll kill them in that fight, it might even make sense since Shido obviously wants them dead and he should do what Shido wants right ? but after the plan with Ren, instead of immediately going for the thieves he put words to Shido to lead him away from going for the cleanup. no matter what he said Akechi knew that Mona wasn't "just a cat" - the cat told them how to change hearts and we saw how Akechi immediately felt bitter that he never could've found out about such a method. if Akechi really wanted them dead, if he was really evil like he made himself out to be, they would've been dead before Ren made it back to that attic.
it made more sense what he did in the engine room, that he never really intended to kill them. even if he was shocked at the thieves inviting him to join them, would he have changed his mind so quickly to die for them when cogkechi showed up ? i don't think what they said to him after defeating him was so character-altering that he went from wanting to kill them to dying for them, even entrusting his lifelong plan to them. yes he realized they were ppl who were good, too good maybe, and that he regretted what he did to this point. and that he never really valued his life, so sacrifice came easy. that he wanted to make one good decision to protect the ppl who could've been his friends, his teammates ? oh but there's no more what-ifs. such a decision only makes sense if to begin with he never actually wanted them dead. he has never wanted to kill to begin with, it's never been that boy who wanted to be a hero of justice πππ
