huh, just came back and like all my images are gone, what happened lol
Since Iāve already seen one post doubting whether the homoeroticism in this update was intentional, letās discuss this. Hopefully we can have some level of nuance about this.
First off, yes it likely was intentional. The idea that there is some same sex attraction between Jonathan and the Count is well established in scholarship on the book. It is not something that just snuck past; itās an element that Stoker included with some knowledge of what he was doing.
Second - and this is where the nuance must start - Victorian readers likely read it as horrifying rather than exciting. The scene is replete with inverted gender dynamics (the brides being aggressive and predatory to Jonathan), elements of non-consent (Jonathan is half conscious or unconscious through the whole thing), and homoeroticism. The reader was supposed to find all of these elements together scary as they invert a lot of the cultural norms and are just generally scary (even if you donāt read any of the other parts as scary, the baby eating certainly is.)
Third, there is a whole other element of the scholarship on whether Bram Stoker was projecting his own horror at his queerness and same sex attraction onto the figure of the Count. There is a lot of evidence from his life that he experienced attraction to men and expressed it in his letters. His personal conflict on the issue very much can be read as seeping into the text of the novel.
So, final point here - Yes, the scene is homoerotic. Yes, that was likely meant as a horror element at the time it was published which mayĀ have mirrored Stokerās own feelings about his sexuality.
But, as modern readers, we can view it through a different cultural lens and not have the level of revulsion that Victorian readers would have.
I love that in the ten years I've been on tumblr, tumblr users' attitude towards tumblr has come full circle, now we're back where we started at "tumblr is our beloved home, no other social media can compare, no other website has what we have, do not trust other websites, do not tell the outsiders about us", only this time we're like. Really exhausted and with a sense of irony about it.
you know what, we should organize a tumblr convention

me, reaching into my dresser drawer for black pants: I hope this isnāt the pair with big holes worn in the inner thighs
Marie Kondo, gently over my shoulder: why is a pair of pants you find unwearable still in your dresser drawer
me: oh shit thatās right!! The dresser is for clothes that under some circumstance I might conceivably wear!!
Marie Kondo, beaming proudly: Yes, thatās correct!! These pants must have been your favorites. How wonderful that they were so comfortable and practical that you wore them out. But now since they no longer function as pants, you should move them from the drawer where you keep your functioning pants!
me: Yes thanks I got it theyāre in the fabric basket now
Marie Kondo, fading back into the darkness: I love what youāve done with the kitchen!!
The notion of KonMari as some creepy semi-embodied but entirely benevolent spirit, like a well-intentioned Bloody Mary, is so perfect and wonderful.
Marie Kondo has the same powers but the exact opposite energy of the Duolingo Owl.
YES.
Marie Kondo: Your room isnāt very clean, but thatās okay, I love mess! Does this spark joy?
Duolingo Owl: I wrote the ransom note in Spanish, and if you have to use Google Translate to read it, your kid gets it. You broke your streak. Iāll break your neck.
Marie Kondo holding your child, while standing on the remains of the Duolingo Owl : The Bird did not spark joy

[Video: a construction worker shoveling dirt as children on the other side of the fence yell āYAY!ā every time dirt is moved.]
Often I am struck with the child like desire to just dig a hole. Kids love to dig holes.
Kids have a pure admiration for blue collar workers. Garbage truck drivers, construction workers, fire fighters, etc. They appreciate and respect these people more than grown ass adults do.
Cause kids see big trucks and machines and the awesome people that know how to use it. Their mentality is āParents donāt let me play in dirt and this guys gets PAID to play in dirtā
And thatās a good thing. We need to hold on to that and foster it in kids. That all labor is valuable and that there is no shame in doing it.
This is taught OUT of kids. And thata the problem. Dont destroy or undermine the admiration for the diggers and garbage guys. Cuz they keep us goin! Iām always grateful to the guys in the garbage truck and the people working behind the orange barrels on the highway.
Love when artists put āreblogging for the morning crowd!ā āReblogging for the weekend crowd!ā in the tags to justify reblogging their own art. But lets not lie to ourselves anymore. Im reblogging for the exact same crowd i just need them to know i mean business. Im reblogging for the didnāt take a hint the first time crowd. Reblogging for the crowd that needs to understand i spent 20 hours on this.
I wish I knew more about this story, but this should be 100% standard procedure in every bar or club.
#to anyone wondering why react this way?#odds are they drugged more than one person#and this way no woman needs to feel singled out as a potential victim#sends the message that people who do that aren't welcome there and they're actively ruining the night for others#and gives anyone who might have been drugged a place to go to get help (via @wingedkiareā)
mmm, the odds are likely LOW that they drugged more than one person, BUT
they tell EVERYONE to get a new drink so that nobody is singled out, AND so every woman has an excuse and public support to walk away briefly from a situation that might have been getting uncomfortable and know sheāll have backup, AND so that the person who did it canāt retaliate against their target in a ācāmon donāt you trust meā way
predators donāt usually crop dust with roofies but they do manipulate and take advantage of womenās socialized training to not make a scene, so the bar takes that part out of the equation by āruining the good timeā themselves and making the scene

i get so freaked out by like. pictures of reallyĀ big rope
Iād like to say thatās normal but Iām a frayed knot
iām so fucking annoyed at this, just for that you donāt get photos of the rope
i changed my mind, this is just too horrifying not to share
itās called a HawserĀ and is the thick cable or rope used for towing/mooring a ship
in conclusion, i have nightmares beyond description
NO it would NOT be cool
well i fucken disagree
@scumrunner do you have any cursed facts about hawsers to share ?
As a fiber nerd, i am personally very enthusiastic about themā¦.
Ohhohohoho DO I EVER. Meet the āsnapback zone,ā not an area with cool hats, but instead the unintuitive range at which a hawser can kill you if it breaks under tension.
What if we kissed in the snap-back zone? š³ š³ š³
I donāt think you guys understand how much force this is, a tow rope used to move a 20 foot boat snaps under tension with enough force to dent metal, shatter glass and seriously injure anyone in its way. A Hawser on the other hand⦠Well Iāve seen a concrete pier with a chuck the size of a sedan ripped out of it by a line failure, and anecdotally, Iāve heard of a 2 ton heavy cargo forklift being skidded sideways, then knocked over. These lines snap with enough force to noticably dent the hull armor of navy ships.
This is a line designed to hold in place a moving object that can be easily in excess of 10000 tons. AND THEY CAN BREAK FROM THAT TENSION ALONE.
THESE THINGS ARE TERRIFYING RUBBER BANDS FROM HELL.
Nope Rope
NOPE ROPE
