Joy and whimsy detected! This walky pink shark is joyful and whimsical!
can't believe the only options are 30 minutes early or 10 minutes late. if only there were some other way. but what can you do
I love how varied and universally weird the circumstances for making lifelong friendships are. Here's this guy I accidentally messaged once and I could not imagine my life without them now. Here's this girl I was so scared of when I met her, I would kill for her and remind her to rest on the regular. Here's this other guy we have so much in common we used to joke we were the same person in different timelines. It took us years to meet in person and I attended his wedding. There are also people who entered my life in absolutely unremarkable ways but changed it forever for the better. It's wonderful how easy it is to find people to love.
This is the best post I have ever written, read the notes and be blessed by loving your friends magic

"You will often be subjected to uncomfortable situations in public and you should learn to navigate that" and "if you play your music out loud in a public hike then the other hikers should be allowed to hunt you for sport" are two sentiments that can and should co-exist
hands you 50 little guys
Today I stripped the sheets off my bed and threw them in the wash with my pillow, and due to unfortunate circumstances none of the above are dry AND I havenât been able to wash the blanket Iâve been using and which needs a wash because it has got The Stink. So I redressed my bed with unfamiliar sheets from the closet, and an elaborate crochet blanket I rescued from the thrift at least two years ago because it is huge and gorgeous and I couldnât find what was wrong with it, and with the open work it looks awesome atop the peacock throw:
And finally, FINALLY! having it spread out on the bed atop a dark contrasting color enabled me to see just what was so wrong that it was abandoned to the thrift:
That is so, so fixable. I can do that. Iâm not gonna right now, itâs gonna sit on my bed like this until the Executive Dysfunction Weasels determine the hands of the Mending Clock are in position for the deal or whatever.
I am happy to take some additional close-up shots of the individual motifs and work with you on visual stitch forensics, if you like
đ oh that would be awesome if/when you've got the spoons for it

Thatâs the most of it. I need to stare at the triangle bits to sort out how they attach and how many stitches and such, but I am Le Tired

A) remind me and I will look at it, whilst better rested and under better light
2) I write all the above straight to post without double checking or edits. If my abbreviations donât make sense lmk. If I have egregious typos lmk. If anybuggy does a test make by following these instruction, I would dearly like to see it!

thank you so much for doing all that investigative work and writing it out! and especially for the note on the sl st behind the bobbles, that's always something i miss somehow
this is what i got by following it as you wrote- i did use US dc for the main body since they seem to match the height in the photos a little more, but kept the US tc for the bobbles to make them puff out more
going by the photos, it almost looks like they attached entirely new strands of yarn for the triangles/lacy bits, but that didn't seem right based on how fiddly it would be (especially for a blanket) or based on how it's coming apart, so instead i tried doubling back with chains, tc, and sc to create it
so for mine the last round was:
ch 3 or chainless starting dc, dc 1 in same sp, dc 13, 2dc in last st before ch sp, ch 2, (2dc in same st, dc 2, place marker, [dc 5, place marker] x 2, ch 4, turn, tc 1 in 2nd marked/center st, ch 8, tc 1 in same st as previous tc, ch 4, sl st to 1st marked st, ch 1, turn, sc 1 in top of same st as sl st, sc 4 in ch4 sp, sk tc, [sc 5, ch 3, sc 5] in ch8 sp, sk tc, sc 4 in ch4 sp, sc 1 in last marked st, dc 1, 2dc in last st before ch sp, ch 2, 2dc in same st, dc 13, 2dc in last st before ch sp, ch 2) around
(separated out for readability since that was a block of text)
i'm not entirely sure about the chain or sc counts, especially the chain 3 between the sc 5s, but it seems to give a similar fullness and roundedness to them
I have got to come back and read this in full and do a test crochet with my bit and your bit to see how it goes, but seeing this way that you followed up my post with your addition that is very yes, and basically has me feeling the need to not go on with the rest of my evening until I say that right now I am feeling just so, so drift compatible
Thank u so much for this tag. I enjoy so much looking at fibercrafts and working out how to do it myself you wouldnât download a blanket wouldnât I bitch watch me and I forget this is not what most people do
You can do it
You can be people who create also, the magic is inside you
If your magic requires permission for activation purposes, I provide that now. Proof! It is I, your fairy craftmother, activating in you the ability to go fuck around with stuff and learn from all the things that go wrong, and keep trying things, and watch other people make things and ask them questions sometimes too, so that you can learn from their shit, and just.

Let's Rename the Birds!!! (pt. 12)
As you may already know... ornithological authorities (such as the AOS and ABA) in North America have decided, for a variety of reasons, to rename all of the birds that have been named after people.
Some examples:Â Lewis's Woodpecker, Smith's Longspur, MacGillivray's Warbler...
I thought it would be fun for us to come up with some ideas for new common names here on Tumblr.
Here are some criteria for re-naming that might appeal to ornithologists and birdwatchers:
Habitat and geographical range
Physical characteristics
Call/song characteristics
Behavior
PLEASE MAKE YOUR NAMING SUGGESTIONS IN THE COMMENTS, REBLOG, OR TAGS.
We'll take the best ideas, and put them in a poll by the end of the week! (I and an esteemed panel of ornithological tumblererrsssres will make the decisions).
WEEK 12 -Â Brandt's Cormorant
Brandtâs Cormorant (Urile penicillatus), courtship displays, family Phalacrocoracidae, order Suliformes
Ranges along the Pacific Coast of North America, from SE Alaska to both sides of the Gulf of California in Mexico.
The more northern populations migrate to the coastal US in Winter.
Strictly marine (ocean) cormorant. (Almost never found inland, except occasionally during migration).
Adults have a bright blue gular pouch during the breeding season.
The nest along the coast, often on cliffs, islands, and rocky outcroppings in groups.
Both parent care for the chicks.
These cormorants dive for their prey, which is mostly fish (but they occasionally feed on squid and crustaceans, as well).
They are known for feeding on herring and rockfish, but feed on up to 93 species of fish.
They may hunt alone or in large groups out at sea.
This is my favorite cormorant.
Courtship and mated pair welcome displays include bowing, wing spreading, head lifting (to show off the gorgeous blue throat patch), and cocking up the tail.
This species does not do the spread wing posture to dry wings for prolonged periods, the way many other species of cormorant do.
Some notes about similarities to other cormorants: there are other species that also nest along coasts, dive for fish, and are found in oceans.

We had so much input for this one, that we couldnât possibly include all the great suggestions, but thanks to you all for your input.
Okay, you made your suggestions, and our esteemed panel of judges has weighed in:
@nemertea; @greycatbird, @passerinethehallway; @todaysbird, @proton-wobbler, and I!!!
What should we rename the Brandt's Cormorant?
Turquoise-throated Cormorant
Blue-throated Cormorant
Sandy-cheeked Cormorant
Lapis-throated Cormorant
Blue Cormorant
Pacific Cormorant
Azure-throated Cormorant
Sapphire-throated Cormorant
Shimmering Cormorant

Everyone envies me for my shrimp lighter
I think it would do people a lot of good, both mentally and societally, if they started thinking of at least some of their actions not as good or bad, or moral or not, or fun or not, but as whether or not theyâre the behavior of someone who lives in a society.
On Friday, I got a notification that I had a package. My apartment has package lockers that FedEx/UPS/USPS/DHL/etc. deliver int and when they register a package to me, I get a code emailed/texted to me that I can use to pop the locker open.
I didnât remember getting a package, but that happens sometimes. I preorder a lot of things and Bookshop doesnât always let you know when theyâve finally shipped something, or a friend surprises me, or whatever. So I put some clothes and shoes on and went over to the leasing office building to get the package.
It was not for me. FedEx is gonna FedEx.
So I picked it up out of the locker and went to the leasing office staff to hand it to them. They were kind of closed for lunch, so I was contemplating what to do if they werenât in. It had the address. I could walk over there and deliver it maybe?
âCause see. A lot of people apparently just shut the locker and are done with it. But if I did that...how would this person know they had a package or where it was? How would anyone get the package back out of the locker, now that the system registered it as retrieved? They donât have the code, and the code is expired anyway.
I could just leave it in the locker. Or take it out of the locker and dump it to the side where it could be pilfered; the exact function the package lockers exist to prevent. Itâs not my package. Not my problem.
But it costs me a tiny bit of inconvenience and time to place it in the hands of and appropriate custodian and save a bunch of other people a lot of inconvenience and time. I live in a society. Society is designed to save everyone across the society as much time and effort as possible cumulatively.
Sure, itâs easier and faster to just shove your shopping cart out of the way and pull out. Not your problem. You donât need the cart anymore. Except now the cart is blocking other peopleâs cars and other parking spots and can ram into cars and people and some poor worker is going to have to go track it down. You have saved yourself a tiny amount of time and inconvenience and in doing so wasted everyone around youâs time and convenience.
Sure, you could put your neighborâs mail from a government agency with an URGENT stamp in your mailbox and mark it âNOT AT THIS ADDRESS.â Or you could. Just. Pop it in their mailbox or slip it under their door (Iâve been having mail problems recently okay. Give the USPS more money).
You donât have to wait an extra 5 seconds to hold the door for someone just behind you. But. Like. Come on, man, really? (Unless you're entering a secured area with restricted access, because that causes a separate cache of problems)
Weighing how much time and effort something is going to cost you compared to how much time and effort it will save everyone else around you cumulatively is...well...pro-social way to think. There are obviously always going to be exceptions and a balance to things, especially if the cost to you is much, much higher proportionally.
We live in a society. We live in many societies.
You can leave your dishes all around your house. But whoever has to do the dishes later (even if itâs you!) is then going to have to remember or know this happened, figure out where they all are, pick them up, deal with any spills/etc. that incurred, and return them to the kitchen and then was them. Was that really worth just putting them in the kitchen earlier? Maybe. But probably not.
âBut what do I get out of that?â Firstly, youâre a tarpit. Secondly, you get all of the time and energy everyone around you has saved you by also being a functioning member of a society.
Societies work because weâre all contributing so the burned is distributed, just the way people can walk over a bed of nails but not an individual nail. We all take up a small part of peopleâs burdens that arenât necessarily ours so we all have better lives.
Consider: how pro-social is your behavior? Sometimes pro-social behavior is a huge undertaking for massive gains elsewhere. But so much of the time it takes an extra 30 seconds, an extra minute.
And what little pro-social tasks can you tally up lately to feel proud and accomplished of yourself? Itâs good for you. Try it out.
what's your plein air set up if i may ask?? I've been wondering what might work for me but I'm so messy with paint/gouache.
Always so enchanted with your landscapes <3
Just a palette and small brush. Side note: was randomly looking at some older stuff for portfolio reasons and I cannot believe how clean my little palette thing used to be. Second ever use vs most recent use:

yesterday i was at the woodworking store getting a knife sharpener because i've been really into whittling hair sticks out of hardwoods which dulls your blades like mad. and the lady who was helping me said "oh yeah i know the feeling of jumping into a project that turns out more complex, that's how i feel about my cable knit right now"
which in turn activated my sleeper autist, and we ended up talking about fiber arts, where i learned that this woman is part of the local lacemaker's guild and uses her woodworking experience to carve lace bobbins on the lathe. she then gave me the email address of the woman who runs it, because their group has no social media and only meets when the lead lady says 'everyone come to my house.'
while all of this was going on, another woman walks up. her partner was shopping for wood repair stuff and she heard us talking about fiber- she's a spinner who does historical reenactments nearby. period accurate, processes the wool herself. of course i ask her if they need volunteers and she gives me her contact info
long story short. autism is everywhere you look and you have to be okay with chatting with strangers. i don't remember where this post was going
the moon is literally my favourite circle
OOH THATS A REALLY GOOD PICK!

that is so cute
