Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You- I'll Catch You if You Fall
I really needed to get this out of my system. This manga has me by such a choke hold. I can't stop thinking about these two. I had to write this while at work on my notes app then emailed it to myself to save on my computer.
Originally, my idea for this drabble was to write about what their first kiss might be like and turn it into something spicy. But while writing I ended up leaning more into fluff and I'm happy with it.
I hope you enjoy!

What should have been a normal smoke break between Sasaki and Tayama takes a sudden turn when Tayama tries to hide an injury.
--
“Tayama-san?”
Sasaki stops in front of the delivery dock behind Super S. Normally at this time, Tayama would be there, waiting to smoke with him. And she’s there now, but instead of puffing on a cigarette, she’s on her knees picking them up off the ground.
“Yoooo, Sasaki-san,” Tayama says, with her usual drawl. “Good hustle today.”
“Are you okay?” Sasaki asks, frantic with worry. “What happened?”
“Eh, I dropped my pack and it spilled all over,” she replies. “NBD.”
“Oh, I see,” he sighs with relief, happy to hear she didn’t fall herself.
Tayama grimaces guiltily. The truth is, she’s too embarrassed to admit that when she came outside, she jumped off the delivery dock, landed too hard, and fell, dropping her smokes in the process.
It’s okay though. She’s wearing leggings so Sasaki won’t be able to see her skinned knees.
Sasaki helps her pick up the last of her cigarettes, handing them to her as she slips them back into the carton. Then he stands up to go and sit on the crates, as usual. Tayama moves to do the same, but as she rises, her knees throb and she flinches.
Sasaki blinks at her. “Are…you sure you’re okay, Tayama-san?”
Tayama scowls. Stupid dense-saki is only perceptive during moments like these.
“I already said I’m fine,” she insists, resorting to lashing out in order to look tough and hide a weakness. But as she takes a step forward, her knees throb again far worse.
She gasps painfully and her legs give out.
“TAYAMA-SAN!” Sasaki cries.
Unable to catch herself, Tayama braces for the cement. But instead, she lands against something soft and warm.
She can feel his chest rising and falling against her as he tries to catch his breath, his long arms wrapped around her, kneeling where he dropped to his knees to catch her. Tayami is too shocked to respond as the heat rises in her face.
“Are…are you alright, Tayama-san?” Sasaki asks.
“…yes,” she replies simply.
“You…really are hurt, aren’t you?”
“It’s not bad.”
“Can you stand?”
She probably could, with a bit of help. But she doesn’t want to. She doesn’t want to move. She wants to stay like this- his big hands holding her, his pounding heart against her cheek, her hands against his chest. She feels so safe and warm and comfortable.
Sasaki feels much the same. Despite his face burning with embarrassment, he doesn’t hate the way Tayama feels in his arms, the way he can feel her back rising and falling as she breathes.
Her head is just at his neck. He could rest his chin so neatly on her hair.
But no. She’s not speaking or moving. Could she be even more hurt than he thought?
“T…” Sasaki croaks worriedly, lifting one of his hands to push her hair back. “Tayama-san?”
She finally moves at this, just enough to lift her head and look up at him. He freezes, his hand hovering next to her face, holding back her fringe.
She stares up at him with her eyes, so bright and beautiful, her face as burning red as his. Her lips are parted slightly. He feels his heart beat even faster.
They really are so very, very close. Almost close enough to-.
“Yamada! Are you still here?”
The manager, Goto, bursts through the back doors in a hurry. Instantly, Tayama and Sasaki repel apart like magnets, facing away from each other.
“Ah, you two,” Goto says, glancing between them. “Why are you on the grou-?”
“NOTHING!” they both exclaim, completely unsuspiciously.
Goto hums thoughtfully. She definitely walked in on something interesting.
“Well, sorry to interrupt,” she says and starts to turn away.
“Ah, excuse me, ma’am,” Sasaki says quickly, standing up. “Do you have a first aid kit?”
“What for?” she asks.
“We-well, um…” he trails off, not wanting to embarrass Tayama further.
She sighs bitterly. “I skinned my knees jumping off the deck.”
“Huh?” Goto snaps, “are you stupid or something?”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m real stupid,” Tayama grumbles.
“Stay put!” Goto demands. “I’ll bring the first aid kit!”
Tayama pouts and stays on the ground as Goto goes back inside.
Sasaki sits on the crate nearby, rubbing the back of his head. “S-sorry…”
“For what?” she asks.
“Uh…erm…”
They can’t look at each other. She can still feel his arms around her back. He can still feel her hands on his chest. If Goto hadn’t burst in, what would’ve happened…?
“Ah!” Sasaki exclaims suddenly, standing up and shaking those thoughts from his head. “I should go! I hope you’ll be okay.”
“Yeah,” Tayama mumbles, her head down to hide her blush. “Thanks for…catching me.”
“R-right,” Sasaki croaks and quickly walks away.
That moment replays over and over in his head. Especially her face when they were looking at each other. She really is so-.
Sasaki halts that thought before it can finish, leaning against a streetlight and presses his hand against his burning face.
“What were you doing, stupid?” he mutters to himself. “She was hurt and you let yourself get carried away. What were you about to do? Argh, just…stop thinking about it. Don’t think about it, don’t think about it, don’t think about it.”
He repeats this mantra as he continues his walk home. He’s tense, knowing full well that if he lets his guard down, that moment will come charging back into his head.
He does wonder, for just a brief second, if tomorrow Yamada-san will be limping.
