Without Whammy’s, Mello could’ve been very different. I think that’s what hurts about his character the most. Intellect is easily the determining factor of worth in the orphanage. The kids are deprived of a family and a normal childhood. They are mostly alive to succeed L, and since only the best can do that, many desperately strive towards the top as they otherwise have no value. I think many children would’ve developed the attitude we see in Mello. He’s just an extreme case. If he was raised better, he could’ve been such a different person. I do believe that he is a loving, friendly, and joyful person at his heart. We see glimpses of that every so often. When he apologizes for Matt’s death, when he treats Soichiro with odd kindness, when he chooses to give Takada a blanket to save her at least some dignity. So, what does the aggression clouding these small acts stem from? That burning ambition to win. And that? That is almost entirely the fault of Whammy’s. Without Wammy’s Mello would have no need to act in the morally grey way he does. He wouldn’t need to do all these things in order to surpass the standard, because that standard would’ve never been ingrained in him in the first place. I do think Mello would be competitive in all universes. Some people just naturally have a personality that is inclined towards insecurity. Especially since Mello is canonically a genius. (Fun fact: highly intelligent people are incredibly prone to imposter syndrome.) However, the difference is the intensity of these feelings and how he would choose to handle them. It’s a shame Death Note only showed one side of Mello. ALSO! This happens to be relevant to the topic:

I just learned that a lot of vintage perfumes and fragrances were intentionally created to blend well with the ever-present smell of cigarettes, and in specific a lot of iconic ones that are super musky and floral and civet-heavy were intended to compliment the smell of fur coats or even "refresh" that new fur coat smell, which is one of the reasons (besides just shifting preferences and trends) that a lot of them smell really, really bad to modern noses.
