I think that, with DCC, the fact that you're following around a white American man who blows stuff up and his talking cat is very intentional. There's a huge cast of diverse and interesting characters and you only get to know a little about them when they enter the Carl and Dounut sphere, but otherwise their story is lost.
But all of these characters that pop in and out of the Carl and Dounut show have conversations and struggles and do shit off screen that Carl constantly had to catch up on. Even the NPCs. They build friendships, have important conversations, and do things off screen that you as a reader really want to know about. They have rich backstories that you're teased with. But you can't know them since the narrative prioritizes Carl and Dounut to the exclusion of everyone else. You're constantly kept just out of the reach of knowledge, as if we could just get one chapter from this characters POV, if we could just see this conversation that happened off screen we would understand so much more.
But Carl and Dounut are extremely profitable, the most profitable crawlers ever even, this is something Carl exploits over and over again. But that's the story we, as an audience, get to see. The only story. And the narrative wants you to feel that loss.
And I don't think it would work as well if Carl didn't care so goddamn much about everyone. He carries the weight of the dead forward through the story, from the nameless millions lost on the first floor, to the people he wasn't able to save, to the friends and family he's lost, to even the ones that the dungeon made the absolute worst versions of themselves.
I keep going back to when Carl tells Tizquick on the fourth floor, "One day this pain you're feeling right now will matter." Because he can't save everyone, but he can make sure that their pain matters, that he can make the people in charge feel it too.
it is funny to me that female npcs keep trying to be sexy at carl, who is 100% asexual even if both he and matt won’t admit it, yet not a single one has thought to take advantage of his mommy issues. you only need one older woman to give him a hug and tell him it’s not his fault and he would, at very least, hear them out. literally the milk approach, if milk wasn’t a perfect wonderful darling angel who deserves the world. eris, you fucked up you picked the wrong kind of milf if you’d come at carl with mom vibes you would have GOT him
I cannot believe the first thing Donut does in the new book is instantly call a hit out on Carl's new wife, she's such an icon. She gaslit that snake into thinking she pissed herself. She did it all while heavily traumatized over committing quite possibly the deadliest and most brutal mass casualty event in the history of the crawl. And then she goes back to the grind like it's NOTHING. Princess Donut they could never make me hate you.
Dungeon Crawler Carl basically goes like this:
Books 1-2: surprisingly well written considering how basic and derivative the premise is. The author read hunger games and hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and took the best parts of both and put his own spin on them.
Books 3-5:
Book 6-7: I wonder how long Matt Dineman had the complete history of this entire scifi universe built out before he decided on a dungeon crawl as the medium he would use to deliver it.

Matt Dinniman: hey guys, check out this manly book for men! it has a strong american man protagonist who kills enemies with his bare hands and also lots of sex jokes! Anarchy? oh no, he just got this class because he deals with traps and bombs, he's only talking about fantasy empires when he tells the people to revolt. He's just hostile to showrunners because he's a hothead, it has nothing to do with how violating and invasive celebrity culture can be haha. He's friends with sex workers but gleefully kills monarchs? why yes, because the monarchs are evil, and the sex workers are fighting for their personhood just as he is, which has nothing to do with real world events. Have I mentioned the feet fetish?

dungeon crawler carl is fun because you go into it thinking it'll be an unserious, fun and gratuitously violent action book, and then you get to the very first boss, and then you think, now hold on. Hold on. And then all of a sudden you're seven books deep and insane and also holding on to the indomitable human spirit for dear life and also a crab has to jack off. like holy shit dude. i've got relentless hope and found family in one hand and the world's weirdest foot fetish in the other
it feels like a water balloon of Respect Women Juice. there's this thin skin of litRPG/shonen story, where you are presented with carl, a very bigstrong tall handsome coast guard mechanic. and you're like 'ok cool time to watch a very manly man do man things like blow shit up and kick monsters to death and get ever more capable of solving all his problems with violence' and then almost immediately carl gets locked into appeasing the dungeomaster's foot fetish, because the alternative is dying. all around him women are complex, nuanced people with their own hopes and fears all making a wide variety of good and bad decisions, and at every turn carl would like to know as little as possible about their sex lives. his own consists of a camwhore pedicure routine every night. meanwhile the author is reaching out of the book every couple chapters to write EAT THE RICH really big on your throat. i love this show.
My coworker said he was having a bad day and I said 'it can't be that bad you haven't started howling like a sad dog yet' and he let out the saddest most pathetic little howl I've ever heard and I was like 'damn ok do you need to have a break?'
Banned from manager training for making my coworker bark.
This has become such a meme at work i just asked the store manager how her days going and she went awoo

”Explain yourself” followed by “stop making excuses” has always baffled me because the fuck you think explaining myself is????
Yeah okay Ill reblog that!
Not a scholar at first, but the guy who wrote Jaws hated that people used it to justify hating sharks so much he dedicated the rest of his life to shark research and advocacy.
The woman who popularized gender reveals wishes she hadn't, afaik.
(afaik- the woman who popularized gender reveals did so because she had a long history of miscarriages. The reveal was a celebration of the fact that one of her pregnancies had gotten far enough that there WAS a physical sex to reveal. It was never intended to be like... *gestures at modern gender reveals* all that. That same kid later came out as trans and yes, the family had a second gender reveal for that lol.)
This whole thread is so beautiful to me that I can explain it

It's kinda funny when you get a bunch of likes but no reblogs like I enjoyed your post but I'd prefer if no one else saw it
