(please suspend your disbelief for the following post)
Shane hits free agency. There's no news about where he's going, if a team signed him up, or anything. Absolute silence from him and his team. People are either starting to panic thinking he's going to retire (at 30???? Shane Hollander????? Retiring?????), or that no team wants to sign him. It's chaos.
Then Shane's official account retweets a mini-documentary from a small local news station of Ottawa.
It starts with the reporter explaining that by going through their archives, they found out an old documentary from twenty years ago that they made with a class of local elementary students, and they thought it would be fun and nice to do a before/after, what did they become follow-up.
At first it alternates between footage of the first documentary, showing the students, etc, and then they switch to a bunch of adults talking in groups and eating at a buffet. You can easily recognize some of the grown-up children. Some of them not at all.
Then they go for the final question they asked the kids twenty years ago: what do you want to be when you'll be older? They show first the kid's answer, and then the adult they later becomes explains what they do now.
There were, of course, a lot of doctors (turns out med school really wasn't for me!), actresses (my parents tried to put me in a theater group and it was a disaster. never again.), various "a mom" and "a dad" (most of them did become parents), firefighters (I didn't make it but I did end up in a fire once), also a very strong "I'll be Prime Minister of Canada" (I work in politic now. I'll make it one day, just you wait!).
And then we cut to ten years old Shane Hollander. Very serious, very blunt, very sure of himself. "I'll be a hockey player."
There's a small laugh from behind the camera. " A hockey player?"
"Yeah. I'll be the best hockey player in the world and I'll get a lot of Cups and beat a lot of records."
"Would you be playing for Ottawa then?" the reporter asks.
Shane grimaces a bit. "I mean I love them but they're bad." Then he seems to think on it. "But since I'll be the best I can go play for them and make them win Cups too." He grins, now, earnest.
Hard cut to now thirty years old Shane Hollander, leaning back against a table, in jeans and an Ottawa Centaurs hoodie. The 81 on the sleeves reveals it's a Rozanov edition.
"Well I recently got married. We just came back from our honeymoon, actually." Then, he grins. "I'm a professional hockey player."
The reporter — the same one from twenty years ago — laughs. "What about the rest of your prediction?"
"Well, I'm one of the best current active players right now. My husband would say he's the best, stats would probably be mixed about it—" There's more laughter from behind the camera. "And until the end of the current season, I was a Montreal Voyageur."
"Until the end of the season?"
"Well," Shane says with a casual shrug, "our values didn't align anymore. And there was another place I wanted to be. I said it the first time, right? I need to bring some Cups to Ottawa."
Now, it's a gasp from the reporter. "So...?"
"As of two days ago, I'm officially an Ottawa Centaurs." Shane is smiling, and it's simple and fond and so terribly happy. "I'm very excited to play for my hometown, with this team. And, also, with my husband. I think it'll be very fun."
"And to get us some Cups, of course."
Shane grins, again. It's a bit smug, maybe, and there's a sparkle in his eyes. "Of course. I did promise it, didn't I? I respect my promises."
... Anyway that's how Shane officially announces he signed with Ottawa.
One of the rookies on the Centaurs asking the guys on the team for advice on this girl he's been trying to date. He can't tell if she likes him and is just nervous about taking it to the next level, or if she's trying to let him down easy and he hasn't been able to pick up on it.
He doesn't get much useful advice and soon the guys are arguing about how long you can pursue someone before it starts getting pathetic. Holmberg is at one end of the spectrum at two weeks ("We're rich professional athletes, man, we shouldn't have to try that hard.") and Wyatt Hayes is on the other at three months ("Maybe she likes you but just doesn't want the WAG lifestyle. You need to prove to her that you see her as a person with her own goals separate from yours.")
Then someone notices that Ilya, despite his wealth of experience, hasn't chimed in yet and asks, "What do you think, Cap?"
"Two years."
The entire room goes still.
"What?"
"Two years," Ilya repeats, completely unashamed. "Is not pathetic to go for what you want. Not if you think they're worth it."
In sync, every person in the room turns to look at Shane, who's pretending to fiddle with the laces on his skates, looking pink-faced and vaguely pleased.
Finally, Holmberg turns to the rookie. "Okay, I guess two years is fine if it's Shane Hollander. Is your girl Shane Hollander?"
The poor rookie has no response to that. His girl is, indeed, not literally Shane Hollander.
"Man, gay people move different," LaPointe mutters.
"This is not a gay thing," Troy objects. "This is a Rozanov and Hollander thing."
Troy being like - I locked down Harris in a matter of months. We are NOT the same.
Ilya would make so many “my husband and the dog he didn’t want” posts
Shane explaining a hockey play on his laptop screen to an attentive looking Anya
Shane squatted down in a grocery aisle with three different dog food bags in front of him, comparing ingredients
Shane doing yoga and Anya imitating some of his poses, Shane reaching over and slightly correcting her posture
Shane up at 4 am to shovel a path for her in the snow to go out and pee
Shane and Yuna debating which of 10 different themed bandanas goes best on Anya for that particular day
Shane carrying bags inside and Anya is trotting after him with small ones in her mouth
Shane on the dock with a ball and hockey stick, he hits the ball with the stick and sends it flying into the lake and she takes off like a rocket and jumps in after it
Ilya filming POV style of himself walking over to the couch where Shane is laying with Anya on top of him. “Can I join?” “No room.” “You are breaking my heart, Hollander. Anya, may I join?” And she shakes her head and puts it more firmly on Shane’s chest

Shane and Ilya star on Hot Ones. Both take it as a challenge to one up the other. Add more sauce, eat more chicken, pretend that no it's not spicy at all. Oh, is it to you? Must be a you problem then.
Both Shane and Ilya spend the following day sprawled out on the floor of the master bedroom, pale and sweaty and feeling miserable. "If the team asks, was not spicy", Ilya croaks from his position next to the shower and lifts his pinky. Shane weakly interliks his pinky with Ilya's and nodds. None of them have the energy for a handshake. It takes a while before Shane speaks again.
"Ilya?"
"Mhm"
"We're not eating chicken for the next month, deal?"
"Da"
The camera is close up on Shane as a reporter asks him how he feels about joining the Centaurs. He talks about how excited he is for their first game and how happy he is to be home and among good people.
The reporter then asks how Rozanov feels about it.
“Oh he hates it. He complains all the time. Keeps telling me to go back to Montreal where I belong. That I’m bringing the team down with my bad energy-“
As he’s speaking, the camera is slowly panning out to show Ilya, arms wrapped around Shane’s waist, nodding along with a massive dopey grin on his face.
attaching something to an email is so scary. what if i accidentally put hard-core porn in there. i don't think i have any downloaded but what if i do and i attached it to the email. what then.

The difference is that jealous Ilya looks homicidal while jealous Shane looks suicidal
literally all I could think about while shane and yuna were having their Moment
he was bracing himself for bad news
Ilya who, whenever Jurrasic Park or any sort of dinosaur movie is on, takes a picture of the TV and sends it to Scott Hunter with a "good game" or "did not kow you were playing tonight".
Scott just lets out a long sigh everytime and counts to ten in his head.
He ends up on the same flight to New York as Shane after an away game in Ottawa, with Scott going back home and Shane travelling for the launch of a new Rebook store in New York.
And Scott can't help but laugh when he sees what the in flight movie options are. At Shane's curious look he waves at the small tv screen and explains the bit Ilya has going on. And Shane, just for a second, gets this weird glint in his eyes before offering Scott one of his earbuds with a smile.
"Want to rewatch the game with me instead?", he asks, holding up his IPad. And, why the hell not, Scott thinks, there are worse things than reviewing their game with Shane (even though he doubts Shane will share any of his strategical thoughts with him).
So, Scott takes the earbud and settles into his seat. Only to be hit with the opening notes of Jurrasic Park five seconds in.
It's my 11 year anniversary on Tumblr 🥳
